can't believe billie piper was once married to chris evans! of all people! but it certainly helped her get her foot in the show biz door after her own singing career bombed and she turned out to be quiet a good actress.
I love the "Oh shit" moment when Claude(io) realizes he made a huge mistake. Also, it's really great that Hero actually has a backbone in this version. She actually has some personality, too.
By removing Don Pedro this production loses the chance to develop the barely suppressed homo-eroticism which is the real root of Claudio's fundamental nastiness.
Pushing Claude off in Don's direction is probably overdoing Shakespeare's deep seated criticism of Macho posture, but this Claude is even dumber than the original.
@thallassocracy Pedro's there...barely. I always assumed he was "Peter" who had the costume party thrown in his honour when he came back to the team...
@Gissedk love the whole scene. they confess their love, hug, yell, argue, walk away, kiss, confess their love again. Sums up the entire Beatrice & Benedick dynamic i think!
"they've taken her back to the hotel - try and calm her down. I can't believe ?????? speech?...Generally speaking though i think it all went pretty well"
@kdacs I guess it was just for the modernisation. I guess Hero is alright but Don John is quite an unfamiliar name. Plus, people may refer to them as Claude and Don anyway.
Im sorry there is no justification for the way Claude reacted! Don is a sad bitter loner and he took his word over the woman he loved. Then he waits til the last possible moment to air his doubts and humiliate her in the most public manner possible. I honestly think he may be a worse villain than Don himself.
@leprechaunprincess the original shakespeare version has Claudio shame Hero because she isn't a virgin, and Don John frames her with a couple of hired men to make the story seem realistic to Claudio and Don Pedro. So if this is based on that story there was very little they could do to change the scene, since it is an integral part of Much Ado.
@leprechaunprincess I agree. I disliked Claudio way more than Don John in the original. The main reason they hated and ostrasized Don John was stupid- just because he was a bastard child.
Claudio wanted to marry Hero because of her wealth and status then publicly humiliated her for revenge yet at the end of the play he still gets to marry her and she acts as if she's happy. Benedick and Beatrice are a much cuter couple IMO. They actually develloped some sort of genuine love for the other.
Everyone says they hate Claud... But i can see where he's coming from, he was tricked and very well, it was really believable, so at the wedding he was heartbroken, and thought she was cheating on him :(, Don's an ashole!
So he leaves Hero humiliated for supposedly sleeping with someone else and then having a drink and celebrating with the guy who supposedly slept with her? Ick.
"I love you. Wow, I've never said that before...well, it may have slipped out once or twice in the heat of the moment." hahaha, oh Benedick, I love you so much.
Blimey! I didn't realise Tom Ellis played Claude in this - poor Martha really does always get Rose's seconds!! (Tom also plays Tom Milligan in Doctor Who, Martha's fiance) :) And isn't Don Lord Robert from the Doctor Who episode Tooth and Claw??
Why doesn't she deny it?

@Saza1345 It makes the moment when he actually does kiss her that much more dramatic.

Couldn't agree more! Claude is unforgivable. If he really loves her, he should at least give her the benefit of the doubt.

i know that he was tricked and everything but if he truly loved her then he wouldn't have believed don
xVooxDooxPlumxFairyx 2 years ago 18
In the original he is tricked in to thinking the he saw her kissing someone else:
Its in her window and the girl looks like Hero, he's also not the only one to see it either. It was more convincing than this one.
Ectoplasm64 2 years ago 15
No, not kissing, full on inflagrante delecto-ing with one of Don's men.
