The irony about this race is Richard Petty won a race he shouldn't have won, and in ''76 he lost a race he shouldn't have lost! Things always have a way of evening out!
I've seen this footage so many times over the years and never get tired of it... The deal between Cale and Donnie was just good hard racing on the last lap...Cale went low, Donnie ran him in the slick grass and that was all she wrote... If it happened today, they'd "freeze the field" and there wouldn't have been a race to the line between Richard, DW and AJ... NASCAR ain't what it used to be...
True, but the way racing is as well, unless you had such a long green run that stretched the field, most everyone would of been bunched, and I think NASCAR would have the common sense to not throw a yellow, especially since the crash was in turn 3.
Then again, considering how they crashed, if that happened exactly today, that would be a massive big one
That footage never gets boring! I always smile when I see that, NASCAR at its best/worst. I love the story about the day after that happened, Bill France watched the tape and replayed that part over and over and his smile grew bigger each time, he KNEW that NASCAR was gonna take off, and it did.
Cale should of been patient but hey, there's a lot of money on the line and they want to be included in the history books. And that fight was worth something now was it?
That's right, but most of them were like that back then. Allisons, Petty, Baker, Pearson, forget it, they would run over anyone to win, and THAT is the way it should be!

2nd best finish in Daytona (1976-No. 1)
Best NASCAR racing took place when they were bad ass real stock cars and not these paper skinned things with sticker packs to designate the make.
I know they are at it hard - but there is something in today's racing that falls short of the mid 60's thru mid 80's
