I know Liza had to present the nominees just like she did. But what the studios and producers had to do with this category? It's for best Actor, not Picture.
In my humble (or I try it) opinion, it's pretty sad that in a video about an Oscar for the great Gene Hackman, I see comments like "should have won -someone-". It's may be true, but it is also true that Hackman is a great actor and he deserved very much win prizes for his performances, something that other people who deserve far less also did.
Im a huge kubrick fan, though not a big fan of clockwork orange. But,mcdowell should have got the oscar. And the pathetic thing s,he wasn't even nominated! The oscars are a joke, and how they overlooked kubrick's films and the performances he got, are all the proof you need.
I don't think Gene Hackman enjoyed playing this character of Popeye Doyle very much cause he couldn't identify with him at all. In the end, he did a brilliant job, but after seeing various interviews with William Friedkin and Hackman I have a feeling Hackman is prouder of several other films he's done, like Hoosiers, Mississippi Burning and Unforgiven.
Trivia: Hackman had just started filming "The Poseidon Adventure" when he won this Oscar. In celebration, Shelley Winters, Jack Albertson, Red Buttons, Irwin Allen, and several crew members brought their Oscars to the set the next day and sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."
@dublaudor Yes. I liked him in all of those and "The Poseidon Adventure," too. I even liked him in "No Way Out" and as Lex Luthor in the '78 "Superman." As much as I like Kevin Spacey, I still think Hackman did a better Lex Luthor.
Gene Hackman getting the Oscar for one of his greatest roles presented by the lovely Liza Minnelli, well deserved. And it was a reversal of roles the next year when Liza got the award for her dazzling performance in Cabaret, presented by Mr. Hackman. And I will say it too, Malcolm McDowell should've gotten a nomination for his work on A Clockwork Orange.
Knockout of a film ; Gene is awesome in it , as he always is ; got to be in my top 5 fav films. Liza was very cute then in a strange way ; funny looking girl ; ugly / (very) attractive
Such a humbled and great human being was able to brilliantly portray a rough and tough NYC Detective in real life international multi-million dollar heroin deal. The French Connection is in my top 5 movies of all time and if you knew me, that's really saying something.
Hackman seems like one of those actors who are kind of nervous at these functions. Like he just wants it to be over with. At the very end of his speech he thanked some woman for bringing him uptown? What does he mean by that?
a thoroughly-deserved oscar win for gene hackman, he is an under-rated actor and not just a film star. mr. hackman always brings something heavyweight to his acting and a film like "the french connection" only proves this. he's also far, far better than marlon brando, clint eastwood, burt reynolds, michael caine, sean connery.
It's interesting that an actor who has excelled for so many decades playing aggressive, alpha males is in real life so shy and sweet natured. That's acting, folks.
OH MY GOD DID ANYONE NOTICE HOW WALTER MATHAEU STOOD UP JUST WHEN LIZA SAID "THE WINNER IS..." and then SAT right back down in disappointment when she said "Mr. Gene Hackman" HAHHA OMG did he really think he was gonna win that much?!?!?! LOL 1:19
A wonderful performance in a classic film. Definitely a well-deserved win. Though it still irks me that they didn't even nominate Malcolm McDowell for A Clockwork Orange. Incidentally, why didn't they have George C. Scott's picture up? Wonder if they were bitter over his Patton snub.
At that point, when a Clockwork Orange came out. Robbery crews were beginning to use the ruse of "we've had a terrible accident, can we use your phone" thing. It was VERY controversial, violent, and of course there was the rape scene. I've seen both movies 20 X's apiece. They are both great.
Yeah im still shocked that Mcdowell wasnt nominated. A clockwork orange was noticed by the oscars. They nominted it for best picture and best director, yet they didn't take Mcdowell's performance into account. Weird?
Liza is so understated and doesn't over-emote at all.
