  • Liza is so understated and doesn't over-emote at all.

  • Liza looks like a pigeon

  • LIZA!

  • she's hot, i'da boinked her much much back in the day

  • gene hackman truly got what he deserved..

  • Gene Hackman still picks his feet in Poughkeepsie.

  • I think Liza Minneli was hot...does that make me gay?

  • @pjbrubak No, but she is still hot today.

  • I was happy that Topol at least got nominated; he was great in that role.

  • Liza Minelli ... was a real wreck even back then

  • @devlin7575 Apple doesnt fall far from tree.

  • I know Liza had to present the nominees just like she did. But what the studios and producers had to do with this category? It's for best Actor, not Picture.

  • Liza is a HAPPY lady!

  • WOW His voice has change a lot when he got older

  • Walter Matthau looks like he used a whole bottle of black hair dye on his hair and mustache

  • love the french connection, amazing film

  • @sayno2lolzisback one of the greatest films of all time

  • freaking Liza Minelli was high sniffing woodpaint

  • mcdowell should have been nominated, nuff said

  • wow, the ceremony was so dignified and subdued back now. now we get whoopi on parade, the seven faces of whoopi and all about whoopi.

  • I get the impression that Hackman was on the verge of crying.

  • lovely liza

  • ...Is Liza Minelli stoned?

  • @billywms Made me lol

  • Great actor. Too bad he's retired from film.

  • i am glad they dropped all those kissups to thew movie companies !

  • Very nice ! I love Gene Hackman.

  • Hackman is a great actor, but the much more complex role was portrayed this year by Peter Finch in "Sunday Bloody Sunday". Time always tells.

  • Trust Walter to look the least miserable.

  • In my humble (or I try it) opinion, it's pretty sad that in a video about an Oscar for the great Gene Hackman, I see comments like "should have won -someone-". It's may be true, but it is also true that Hackman is a great actor and he deserved very much win prizes for his performances, something that other people who deserve far less also did.

    Sorry por my bad English.

  • Im a huge kubrick fan, though not a big fan of clockwork orange. But,mcdowell should have got the oscar. And the pathetic thing s,he wasn't even nominated! The oscars are a joke, and how they overlooked kubrick's films and the performances he got, are all the proof you need.

  • Topal should have won

  • Roy definitely should have won Supporting Actor for French Connection. Both Hackman and Schneider (misspelled probably) were excellent.

  • gene hackman is a legend

  • gene hackman in french connection is great, but malcolm mcdowell (clockwork orange) make the best performance of year.

  • Hack Man!

  • R.i.p gene hackman

  • @xKrazyGluex He's not dead dude, just retired.

  • @xKrazyGluex

    He's still alive, just retired.

  • And the winner is... George C Scott for "Man Getting Hit By Football". "AHHH MY GROIN"

  • Topol gave an outstanding performance. It's such a shame he didn't win...

  • I don't think Gene Hackman enjoyed playing this character of Popeye Doyle very much cause he couldn't identify with him at all. In the end, he did a brilliant job, but after seeing various interviews with William Friedkin and Hackman I have a feeling Hackman is prouder of several other films he's done, like Hoosiers, Mississippi Burning and Unforgiven.

  • @dzanier He didn't at the time, but I think he's mellowed towards it since if you listen to his commentary track on the DVD

  • Lord, they don't have oscar's like this anymore. Truly great actors like this is a single category. The last of the greats.

  • Wonderful ! I'd love to see the whole show - isn't that Jack Lemmon , blurred in the background , when Gene Hackman arises from his seat at 1:27 ?

  • Topol should have won!

  • You took a long break, comeback already Mr. Hackman.

  • "Wait! Where are you going? I was going to make Espresso!"

@NicoretteMan Mr. Hackman has retired after a lengthy career in the movie business.

  • Gene Hackman is the only good thing that comes from USA.

  • Trivia: Hackman had just started filming "The Poseidon Adventure" when he won this Oscar. In celebration, Shelley Winters, Jack Albertson, Red Buttons, Irwin Allen, and several crew members brought their Oscars to the set the next day and sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."

  • damn liza looked hot back in the day...jesus

  • mississipi burning.....wow!!

great actor.......glad he shot frog one at the end....heheh

  • whoah! Liza looks kinda hot back then

  • @92af Yet in many ways they are oh so different.

  • lol since they mention all theproduction stuff anf shit is twice as suspenseful.

    gene hackmans best performances:

    1. the french connection

    2. the conversation

    3. unforgiven

also loved him in hoosiers and the superman movies :P

  • Walter stand up in 1:18 haha

  • @dublaudor Yes. I liked him in all of those and "The Poseidon Adventure," too. I even liked him in "No Way Out" and as Lex Luthor in the '78 "Superman." As much as I like Kevin Spacey, I still think Hackman did a better Lex Luthor.

  • walter m looks like saddam hussin here

  • Gene Hackman getting the Oscar for one of his greatest roles presented by the lovely Liza Minnelli, well deserved. And it was a reversal of roles the next year when Liza got the award for her dazzling performance in Cabaret, presented by Mr. Hackman. And I will say it too, Malcolm McDowell should've gotten a nomination for his work on A Clockwork Orange.

  • 1:19 Walter Mattheau thought he won

  • Knockout of a film ; Gene is awesome in it , as he always is ; got to be in my top 5 fav films. Liza was very cute then in a strange way ; funny looking girl ; ugly / (very) attractive

  • Such a humbled and great human being was able to brilliantly portray a rough and tough NYC Detective in real life international multi-million dollar heroin deal. The French Connection is in my top 5 movies of all time and if you knew me, that's really saying something.

  • Hackman seems like one of those actors who are kind of nervous at these functions. Like he just wants it to be over with. At the very end of his speech he thanked some woman for bringing him uptown? What does he mean by that?

  • a thoroughly-deserved oscar win for gene hackman, he is an under-rated actor and not just a film star. mr. hackman always brings something heavyweight to his acting and a film like "the french connection" only proves this. he's also far, far better than marlon brando, clint eastwood, burt reynolds, michael caine, sean connery.

  • @aewd1980 Marlon Brando Clint Eastwood Michael Caine anddddd Sean Connery NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • OOH-RAH Marine.

  • Gene Hackman is much better than Marlon Brando was

  • @92af that's true.

  • @92af Why do you say that?

  • @spxeli because Gene Hackman IS better.

  • I thought enemy of the state was a good part, even tho it resembles the guy from the conversation

  • Gene never dissapoints. never. always good no matter if the film is crap.

  • @dublaudor You forgot ''Bonnie & Clyde''.

  • I love Gene Hackman, I think he is one of the greatest actors ever but this is the only film I've seen him in where I didn't like his performance.

Ironic as this is his most famous role, winning him the biggest award of his career.

I'm not knocking him as an actor as he's been fantastic in everything else.

    Fabulous actor.

  • It's interesting that an actor who has excelled for so many decades playing aggressive, alpha males is in real life so shy and sweet natured. That's acting, folks.

  • they cruelly snubbed Malcolm Macdowell for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

  • @mensahcarrelle Malcolm MacDowell should be nominated in Clockwork Orange? are you sure?

  • gene hackman was the shit! I love Jimmy Popeye Doyle!

  • How cool it has to be to walk up to the stage to the tune of "French Connection"?

  • This was Gene Hackmans best role ever

  • OH MY GOD DID ANYONE NOTICE HOW WALTER MATHAEU STOOD UP JUST WHEN LIZA SAID "THE WINNER IS..." and then SAT right back down in disappointment when she said "Mr. Gene Hackman" HAHHA OMG did he really think he was gonna win that much?!?!?! LOL 1:19

  • Topol should have won.

  • A wonderful performance in a classic film. Definitely a well-deserved win. Though it still irks me that they didn't even nominate Malcolm McDowell for A Clockwork Orange. Incidentally, why didn't they have George C. Scott's picture up? Wonder if they were bitter over his Patton snub.

Could you please post William Friedkin's win?

  • @TulseLuper George c scott picture wasnt there because scott wasnt at the awards

  • @TulseLuper

At that point, when a Clockwork Orange came out. Robbery crews were beginning to use the ruse of "we've had a terrible accident, can we use your phone" thing. It was VERY controversial, violent, and of course there was the rape scene. I've seen both movies 20 X's apiece. They are both great.

  • @TulseLuper It's available now check it out just type in William Friedkin winning oscar for French Connection.

  • @TulseLuper

Yeah im still shocked that Mcdowell wasnt nominated. A clockwork orange was noticed by the oscars. They nominted it for best picture and best director, yet they didn't take Mcdowell's performance into account. Weird?

  • @AKenjiB Good point.

  • Hackman was great, but IMO Peter Finch should have won.

  • Been waiting for this awhile. Thank you.

  • Topol Should Have won. Hackman is nothing compared to him

  • Gene Hackman is awesome. But why does Liza Minelli sound like she has a british accent? lol.

  • That's the beautiful and underrated Candy Clark sitting next to Peter Finch. She was Jeff Bridges' girlfriend at the time.
