In answer to the question asked by waziojan: the place that you were thinking about was not called "tjaders", rather it was popularly known as "El Matador" on Columbus Street.

Oh yes We love Cal! He is a giant in the realm of Mongo and Cachao for making and advancing Latin Jazz and the entire Jazz genre. Many of the best of the best consider him one of their favorites! He deserves more recognition.
On Monday I am sharing some of this superb "cool" west coast jazz of my day with my students at San Diego City College. It is not a music class, but music bridges any generational gap and I know that we will all find common ground. Thank you for posting!
This years grammys are not incl. catagory for Latin Jazz ! Such BS of comercialization over the cultural art of music of the Americas ! Latin Jazz is a unique American Art form !
I don't know how I missed most of these wonderful posts but thank you to everyone for sharing. I should say thanks on behalf of my dad. There are times I wonder if people still listen to his music and just scrolling through here is proof he still has fans. Right on! I don't think there could be anything more sorrowful for an artist than to think people no longer appreciated your art. He'd be so happy to read all these generous posts. Incidentally, the club on Broadway was called the El Matador.
Back around 1972, I used to rehearse with a band in the old Fantasy recording Studio in San Francisco. There were Cal Tjader albums everywhere! I'd always see his name listed in front of a certain club on Broadway. I was a bit too young to go into bars at the time and I didn't know who he was yet. I was curious and eventually I bought one of his albums, then another, and so on. I place Cal's music on the top of my list for great music, great compositions, great beauty and great energy!
@waziojan I lived in San Jose in 1972 and used to go see Cal whenever I went to Frisco. I think the club was called "Tjaders", right in the midst of the strip clubs, and you could sit right in front of him and watch the master at work. He was so smooth! I am a vibes player and Cal was my major influence...you can hear his style in my playing today.
@kidfromstatenisland I agree with your comment 100 %. Let`s share these nice sounds for all times. I am with you wherever you are. Stay loyal to the music. I understand your thoughts for sure. Take care, music lover.
I have always been a FAN of the LEGENDARY MR. CAL TJADER! I first heard his music as a child back in the late 1950's and NEVER, EVER, FORGOT HIS INCREDIBLE MUSICALITY, ORIGINALITY, NOR HIS IMMENSE TALENT! QUE VIVA LA MUSICA DEL MAESTRO, EL SENOR, CAL TJADER! His talent and music continue to influence so many of his followers today! GOD BLESS YOU CAL! WITH MUCH LOVE AND APPRECIATION ALWAYS, july1656
I have always been a FAN of the LEGENDARY MR. CAL TJADER! QUE VIVA LA MUSICA DEL MAESTRO, EL SENOR, CAL TJADER! His talent and music continue to influence so many of his followers today! GOD BLESS YOU CAL!
I think a lot of people (myself included) discovered Cal because he's been sampled on some fairly legendary hip-hop tracks. This one is very nice! I dig Cal!
I was first introduced to Cal Tjader's music back in the mid-'60's when I was only 9 or 10. One of brothers and I used to sneak into my oldest brother's '59 Chevy Impala and listen to his Cal Tjader 8-tracks all afternoon, draining his car battery in the process. I've loved his music ever since: its timeless, melodic, soulful, and will forever remind me of so many carefree, youthful days growing up in L.A.
Cal had great taste, He never abused the instrument compared to a lot of other players. The vibes are tough to get your own sound and he surly succeeded.
I have loved your dad's music ever since I was first introduced to his great sounds when I was listening to a radio show in Los Angeles during the 1960's . I first saw your dad at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, California in 1967 and saw him many times during the following years. I also by pure chance had the good fortune to be at the Lighthouse when your dad recorded "Plugs In" at the Lighthouse. What an incredible experience that I will never forget.
Your Dad couldn't take a wrong step! I'm without an iota of a doubt he gave everything he did his all. I regret I was never able to have the singular thrill of seeing him in concert. There are good, even great, Latin musicians out there today, but none could even kiss the hem of his garment. He was, and will always remain, THE MAN.RIP.
I am just a music teacher/musician down here in Miami and I am a total fan of your father's work. They still have not given him enough credit for being a Latin jazz pioneer in this country.
I have been searching all over for a fine video of your father and his group playing in some kind of live performance preferably so that I can show the students in my Jazz Music Appreciation classes down here in Miami. I loved all your father's groups (especially the last two)
I first turned on to cal in my teens in the 50's and fell in love with his music. Must have every record he made. Was fortunate to live in the SF bay area and saw him many times in person at the Blackhawk nightclub and many years later in Marin. Such a treat! His music spoke and still speaks to my soul. They had a fab tribute to him in SF with all the musicians that used to play with him. Was truly a great night.
@rickiartist He played a free concert in Pleasanton way back in the early 70's. A contractor had just opened up an new tract of homes and put on a show to celebrate. It was a Sunday - Cal listened to the 49'ers game between sets. He was a delightful performer. He also performed at the Stanford Shopping Center on a jazz night show.
@deb6sbcglobal How lucky we were to be able to see him in person. I can just see him listening to the ball game between sets. That's a nice memory. I loved all his groups and music, but particularly his Latin Jazz. You could really tell they loved what they were doing.
Nica's Dream is written by the great Horace Silver. Written for Nica de Koenigswarter, a well to do jazz patron. She was very close with Thelonious Monk, Bird and many others. Although in ill health, Horace Silver remains a marvelous writer, composer and player.

I listen to these cuts and I can see my father so clearly. Am so sad I came to appreciate his talent and courage so late.
So much of who he was as a person can be heard in his choice of notes, his phrasing and harmonies, his melodies. He was a great man both as a musician and father.
I couldn't possibly imagine what it would be like to have a dad as utterly cool as Cal Tjader! I have about 25 of his albums and his playing never fails to lift me up when I'm down. I just feel good all over when I listen to him, 'cause he played with such FEELING! Anybody who plays beautifully like that must have been a super guy, too. You're very lucky, Elizabeth. --Florida Dan
Wow, thank you for your generous comment. I will never tire of hearing when someone loved my father's music. I sincerely appreciate your comment.
And yes, he was a super, sensitive, kind, funny man who when I listen to his music can hear him speak. Wish I could talk to him again. He has become one of my heroes.
Thank you very much for your kindness and support of him.

I always like to say thank you to anyone who takes the time to tell me their feelings. Thank you. I know how happy my dad would be to hear many still love his music. You know, when you love something and work passionately at making it yours, the best recognition or thank you in the world isn't money or fame, it's in notes like yours. Knowing you touched someone is incomparable. My dad would be thrilled. Thank you very much for your kindness. Where are you? Saludos back:)
elizabeth.. I saw your dad many times in the Blackhawk, sometimes with dave brubeck.. and I have a lot of his old records. he gave so much pleasure to sll of us.
Thank you most sincerely, as I write to all in here who have been most kind and offered great generosity of heart in writing to me. I remember the Blackhawk as a young girl being forced to sit behind a screen. Funny. I even have an old ticket stub from the Blackhawk. (my brother might have it actually). The good old days. Those were exciting times. I wish we had the passion, creativity and celebration of jazz now we had back then.
I know you've heard this many times but here goes: Your dad is a GENIUS! I ran into his work by accident. When I was a kid, I remember my dad listening to a lot of Joe Cuba and Tito Puente. The vibes' sound was something that stuck to me ever since. One day I got a Caribbean Jazz Project CD and a buddy of mine said: "If you like that stuff you're listening to now, wait 'til you listen to this guy." Next day, I was listening to "Ritmos Calientes"... The rest is history...
I hope you hear this with the most sincere appreciation and gratitude: thank you. Thank you for taking the time to tell how you became a fan.
It probably seems terribly pretentious to agree with you, but how can I not? I also loved my dad's playing. I'm older now and appreciate his commitment and passion with so much more clarity. I can still see his eyebrows raise on melodies and his mouth keeping time with the rhythms.
@eatjader Just thought you might like this story. Cal's recording of "What Are You Doing The rest Of Your Life" turned out to be prophetic for me...I played it on my vibes accompanied by Cal's album for the beauiful girl I had just met in Sept 73. We married in Feb 74 and will be "...for the rest of our life!" It has always been "our song" and it brings tears to our eyes whenever we hear it or I play it on the vibes.
Waw,..I would like you to know , he is the greatest ,.I came across a song in interlude of a hiphop album,..and I was curious to know who made that beautiful music. I just could not stop listening to him there after, ..just amazing! ,..thank you!
At the risk of sounding repetitive, thank you. As I've expressed to all who have contacted me, thank you most genuinely. I imagine my dad hearing these great testimonials and feeling he did do his job afterall. He's touched many of you. That is priceless to any artist.
The fact you've taken the time to write me remains appreciated by both my brother and me. Thank you most sincerely!
it´s refrescante to listen to this beautiful melodia, which is a standard one of the jazz. But if we added to him that the universal of the music pronounces when post it a young person of Japan. Thousand thanks, Excelent...

@deepin93 - I could be wrong but this could be a tribute to “The Baroness” the patron saint of Monk. Nica De Rothschild (pardon the spelling) she was loved by all jazz musicians and numerous jazz compositions where written in her memory. I heard she wrote her will that her remains be cremated and scattered at “Midnight” in a river in New York. Wonderfully strange but true, a great patron of American Jazz.
