He has numerous errors not only in his french diction, but also sings the wrong words altogether at times. He also ignores the accidentals in the cadences of both verses (the "D" natural). I have not heard him in a small house but I did see him at the Met in Giovanni....it was a puny sound. The Masetto was a larger sound. Mr. Hvorostovsky is all about the marketing of a sexy guy.
Check out Ildar Abdrazakov or Željko Lučić to hear what a real Baritone ought to sound like.
Only one thing aganist: he's taking the tempo as he wants, ignoring the orchestra from time to time..In everything else I agree with the other comments, he's a great singer.
I doubt that if he were singing with a microphone, he'd be winning all those prestigeous prizes, or singing with Pavarotti, or that he'd be so respected worldwide.
I love his acting: you can really see the boastful Escamillo there.
@Galastel singing with Pavarotti didn't amount to much in his later years. Didn't he duet with Bryan Adams? Seems that if you had a large check and an equally large plate of pasta you could get Pavarotti to do pretty much anything.
oh just stop, he is very good, great bass baritone. microphone or not, he can sing better than any of u trolls probly can. so just stop and try to enjoy the great music the video is playing. u idiots
@Phantess Yes, I can do better. I sang Escamillo many times on stage without microphone. Hvorostovsky is nothing without a microphone. He is a pathetic fake.
@Baritanist Actually, I just saw him in Vienna last year, in November. He had no microphone or nothing and he stole the show. So don't go around calling someone a pathetic fake.
@Phantess ROFL you won't even see the microphone. You can hear it from the fake artificial sounds he produces. It's a voice BLOWN UP by AMPLIFICATION. The Viennese are a bad public they accept everything.
@levmila слушают, но многие русские знают еще и английский (и другие языки) помимо русского. Насколько мне известно, здесь на YouTube, английский - язык интернационального общения.
He has a very small voice with a very limited range. He has no top and only knows how to sing in the middle of his voice. Never understood what people were so excited about. I would much rather listen to Leonard Warren sing this aria
@Giovannifabuloso Have you heard him in person? I don't think so. As per some recordings - they remind me of the old anecdote "Why are they bragging about this Caruso guy? John sang to me his part over the phone yesterday, it was nothing impressive!" Go to a concert and you will understand the excitement. He is absolutely amazing even not in the best of voices - I listened to him in Montreal when he was evidently ill - and I am still fascinated! Stage presence... A rare one!
@Giovannifabuloso He's famous for many reasons, but one of them is that he's hot! Gust like Netrepko! We live in a shallow, shallow world, get used to it!
@MikrosBeethoven He's famous because he's an amazing musician, has an amazing stage performance and most of all, his voice is like silk. You will never find someone as good as him. Deal with it.
Who lite a fire in his pants??? Where is the fire he is in such a rush to get to! WOW! WHY SO FAST? Are his high notes shot so he can't hold them or what??? And did anyone else notice - Nothing in the eyes! Must all be just about notes...
THRILLING is the only word that applies! His voice is heaven on earth....you can have all the tenors you want: give me a great baritone like Hvorostovsky!
A really amazing vocal technique:. Incredible "fiato", emission, vocal line and natural colour. A really big and beautiful voice. Besides, such a passional interpretation. One of the Gods of singing. No doubt. I wish i could hear him live one day.
I'm more than lucky to have him in Berlin at the Deutsche Oper in "Un ballo in maschera"- can't wait, on October 30th and Nov. 5th! First time live on stage. Bravo Dimitri!!!!
He does not sound this way live. There is virtually no squillo whatsoever to his voice in person. He has a very small voice and they have him singing these dramatic baritone roles, mainly because these so called great teachers and institutions are not able to develop dramatic voices. So there are none to chose from. So they take smaller voices and make them sound bigger and better than they are through enhancement. Just think that Merrill, Warren, Ruffo, Tibbet...all sang this stuff.
Well, I cannot argue against you. I just think that just because you don't have a big and dramatic voice you shouldn't sing. There is something to appreciate I think in the hard work of any singer despite anything.
I don't think I wrote that. He should not be singing dramatic roles without the voice for it. He should stick to smaller roles. Even then, however, a small voice should still be chiaroscuro. The size of voice should not affect how well it is produced.
Yeah, it is dying unless great singing comes back. Opera was not meant to be enhanced or mic'd. It is not opera. You can sing opera music being enhanced and mic'd, but that doesn't make you a true opera singer.
We have not changed physiologically so there are still very talented voices out there. Technique has changed and people are no longer able to fully develop voices to their full potential.
I touch myself at nights with this.

I liked his voice....it is powerfull...nice....but it has some arias that must be singing with the righ accent, "pour les liesons", like that one.
But he is a nice singer...in a russian style, and from a russian school.
Totaly diferent from the italian one (my favorite)

@BassHaritone Actually, your "marketing of a sexy guy" remark would be more applicable to Abdrazakov than to Hvorostovsky.
At any rate, Sam Ramey was better than either of them.
