This is one of the WB cartoons that piqued my interest in 'classical' music. I can't play a note but I can appreciate good music. There's a world of sublime music for you. Good music belongs to all 'genres' from everywhere. There's a load of crap too. Bad, middling, good - figure out what's worth keeping and why.
The enchanting little riff is an adaptation from Mendelsohn's 'Hebrides overture.' An overture without an opera to follow - there's daring
Did someone say 'not love that dratted Minah bird!' I watched these cartoons as a kid and that damned Minah bird scared the pants off me! Look at that last scene - that's a feathered dinosaur! Minahsaurus Rex at least! Very effective indeed. They had such an effect on me that I cannot now hear Fingal's cave without shivers running up my spine. But I agree with a lot of the comment in the stupidity of banning crreatiions like this - these forms of censorship are like prohibition - useless.
ACountryFan, I couldn't have written it any better than you! Your last sentence says it all!!!! As for me I love Inki and the Minah bird. A time and era of simplicity without being politically correct and as you say" a joke in itself"!!
I am in 100% agreement with theohiokid67! These were and are classics that hopefully will never determine what is right or wrong to watch and enjoy without someone yelling " foul". Get a grip , don't like it ,don't watch, it is your loss!
How in the blue hell do you NOT love the minah bird and Inki? If you take offense to this cartoon, you didn't grow up with it. This among other cartoons were and still are classics. They are just cartoons, deal with it. Sorry if you are too uptight to enjoy this and take it for what it is.
@awesomeirlable What's not PC about it? It depicts an African boy IN Africa!! What in the WORLD could be wrong with that!??
Thank you VERY much for speaking out about this!! It's nice that so many of you do.
I have YET to see a white guy getting offended by the likes of Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam, etc., or New Yorkers getting cheesed off because Bugs has a Bronx accent. I never even cared that Inki was African!! I liked these Little Inki cartoons for the music, "Fingal's Cave"!

@blaquejaxx yeah i remember it too fo some reason it got stocked in my head forever i loved minah the bird that bird was gangsta neva said a word n d song fingals cave wich is the songs that plays while the bird walks neve got out of my head till this day!!!!
I think I remember the Minah bird going around during an entire episode of either foghorn leghorn or bugs bunny, it would be VERY much appreciated if I was given the names of any other episodes the Minah bird shows up
My problem is that they DONT show this on tv for pc reasons. Lets not, uh, whitewash these cartoons and rewrite history, ok? By the way, I'm VERY black.
I think the bird represents a classical Jungian archetype - The Shadow: other than being apparantly dak (it's black color), it is also mysterious and mystical, irrational and potentially troubling and it strongly reflects this weird feeling of uneasyness (I remember seeing it as a kid and I always felt very disturbed whenever I watched it).
I feel that the Minah bird is, perhaps, the soul of a cursed man who must walk throughout eternity alone and uninhibited. He cannot die, nor may he cease his march toward oblivion.
That bird appeared in other cartoons too. I recall a parade of other characters following him, imitating his synchopated step. Anybody have a link to those? Please share if you do. That fricken bird is awesome!
I don't really care for any of Chuck Jones's cartoons before he hit his stride in the 1950's with Bugs Bunny and Daffy cartoons. The co-animator Shamus Culhane lists this as one of Jones's best cartoons, but I find the animation sloppy and the cartoon just weird. I appreciate you posting it, though. Robert Clampett and Tex Avery were really the outstanding directors of the 40's. (Just my opinion.)
What do is called that instrumental song that plays when you have passed: 1 min. and 47 sec .?.... What is the name the song and who originally played?, Any type composer Beethoven?
I like the growling butterfly. The mynah bird is badass. I love how all the animals flee in terror and the trees shake--a horrible growling sound is heard and out pops--this small depressed bird.
I really like this cartoon. It seems kinda offensive (in my opinion) but not enough to make me upset or not want to watch it.This cartoon is from the 40's when people weren't as educated on the subject of race or political correctness.I think that those who keep telling others to "stop whining" probably have never had a personal experience with racism. So you shouldn't tell people how to feel about the cartoon. Some are deeply offended by it, some like myself are not. I love this animation!
ANYBODY that thinks this is racist is just a damn fool!! I'm American-Indian btw. You don't hear me pissing & moaning over a bunch of nonsense like this. Seriously, get over it already!
Damn I'm a Brown-skinned American, and I say why can't we se the humor in it. You have to be able to laugh @ yourself before you laugh @ others. True to life, Yo.
Sure it's un-PC, and you could make a good case that the particular type of cartooning used on Inki's design would be considered insensitive, at least in the US (Not really here in Europe per se though.) But it's not really racist.
I mean, compare these cartoons to other cartoons from the era with black characters in it. Many of them are FAR more offensive, and many of them are ACTUALLY racist.
I mean if Inki had been a white safari-helmeted Elmer Fudd looking character who'd have acted EXACTLY the same, no one would think it is racist. So I'd argue Inki doesn't particularly act stereotypical.
And there are many old cartoons from the era where black characters DO act very stereotypical (And are drawn far less flattering too!)
So I just think racist is to strong a word. Even if it's un-PC.
Also... I'd swear I saw that Mynah Bird make a cameo in a more modern WB produced cartoon.
@Shavarnarak You're right. It was in the animaniacs. It made a cameo in an episode of the Goodfeathers, that little short about the pigeons that talked like Italians.
Honestly, I think it's kind of a shame that this awesome Minah Bird character had to become a virtually unknown Looney Tunes character due to the otherwise unfortunately racist depictions in this admittedly great cartoon.
Although interestingly enough, some people may remember that the guys responsible for that newer Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries show tried to bring the Minah Bird back in that show.
But unfortunately, the Minah just wasn't as cool as he was, here.
this is one of those very rare WB cartoons that you dont see anymore thanks to ted turner and the p.c. police.when ted bought the wb rights, think he locked up all the ones that might "pffend" someone in a vault somewhere.I have'nt seen this in thirty yrs.thankyou whomever you are.
This was always a favorite of mine when I was a kid, oh, Saturdays where wonderful. But my dad's cousin had a mynah bird that swore like a sailor. Not kosher for a very religious household. God I loved that bird.
I used to have this on VHS. It was one of my favorites!!! This and The Tale of Two Kitties with one of the first appearances of Tweety. plus it had a Mighty Mouse cartoon on it. Total Tri-fecta!
It's my understanding that the animator who worked on the Lion in this cartoon was Shamus Culhane, a maverick in the industry. He began at Fleischer's studio working on the early Betty Boops and graduated up to Disney's Snow White and Pinocchio. When he wore out his welcome at Disney's and Fleischer's (again), he went to WB where Leon Schlesinger offered him a directors job. He worked on this one cartoon, and when Schlesinger reneged on his director's offer, he quit.
I love the minimalist, almost Dr. Seuss-like backgrounds from Chuck Jones' 1940's Warner Brothers cartoons. Jones is one of my all-time favorite animation directors.
Esto es lo que se necesita !!! este tipo de entretencion para nuestros hijos algo sano sin violencia , se los mostrare a mis nietos !!! asi como se quedaron para siempre en mi mente .. gracias por subirlos !!!
I remember watching this sometime in the 1990's and now I am 17. I wish they put this back on television. I liked when the lion cried like a baby when the bird got his meat.
I watched these and I'm 46 . . . Alas, Inki isn't PC . . . it's a 'negative image' - that minah bird would make an idiot of anyone - look at what he did to the lion!
In case this has not been answered (cba to look up all posts) : The 'walking minah bird theme song' is Mendelssohn's "Fingal's Cave" .... Hope this helps :-)
ive been looking for this cartoon for YEARS for my mother! she couldnt remember the name all she remembered about it was a little black hopping bird! youve made her very happy thank you :)
love the bird, best WB character ever. yay for having retired cartoons on a double video collection. it even had a wartime cartoon on it (with hitler at the end) and one of the censored 11.
at 2:59 where they are in the girls house the two faces did you all noticed the revirsed cross? on the face that should be da nose wright on the side of the lion
blackface was the central theme in the mintrel show, when white actors would put on brown make-up and act black based on stereotypes of the day. This was common in movies, vaudeville, and, theatrical cartoon shorts. I'm guessing your white seeing as you do not know.
Regular clowns were not intended to demean a race of people. This is why racial reconciliation is not possible. Clearly you have never seen racist caricature before. Also I would like to point out the fact that the first homo sapiens came from Africa. I'm merely pointing out historical fact, racism is always part of pop culture.
I do not want it censored, because it has historical value. A vast majority of whites hold negative views of blacks, it is silly to say it is a more tolerant society.
marnerbroman, it's silly to compare blackface minstrel shows with clowns' white faces. The former was meant as racial mockery, the latter was not. BIG difference.
And 87fg, it's foolish to take relatively trivial misunderstandings like that and make the giant leap of "this is why racial reconciliation is not possible." (!!!)
According to Reg Hartt (look him up, he's brilliant) Disney once asked Jones what the hell he was trying to say with this cartoon, to which Jones replied, "The fifth dimension". He and Clampett were both secretly very esoteric minds, and that for me is a big part of what makes the Looney Tunes legacy so endlessly fascinating.
I don't know why, but just seeing that bird walk makes me laugh.

Where did you find this? I have not see this since the early 1980s and I am 42. i see the negative image but was still on NYC and NC TV.

This was always one of my favorite childhood cartoons. Still is, and I'm now 26 years old. Some things never get old, I guess.

I read somewhere that this cartoon is banned, is this true?
ghostface751 3 years ago
I can confirm that is isn't banned in Canada. It still airs on the retro cartoon network.

I watched these and I'm 46 . . . Alas, Inki isn't PC . . . it's a 'negative image' - that minah bird would make an idiot of anyone - look at what he did to the lion!
Ladymech62 3 years ago
I feel so sorry for that lion during this short. He's fantastic.
setheurovision94 3 years ago
my name's minah. :)
not pronounced like that though.
inki's sexy.

I may have this on DVD. I love this one! Thanks for posting!

Another one of the classics. The Caveman Inki shorts have always stuck with me from childhood, largely because of the Mynah's iconic theme music.
ArcaneAzmadi 3 years ago
In case this has not been answered (cba to look up all posts) : The 'walking minah bird theme song' is Mendelssohn's "Fingal's Cave" .... Hope this helps :-)
kuzmo86 3 years ago 3
I have been humming this theme song for 45 years - literally. Do you happen to know what the Looney Tune "Robot Assembly Line" song is??

Powerhouse by Raymond Scott

That's the "Hebrides Overture" by Felix Mendelssohn.

Of course cartoons of this era are surreal. But they beat the tar out of what kids watch now. I'll take the oldies over Sponge Bob any day!

love the bird, best WB character ever. yay for having retired cartoons on a double video collection. it even had a wartime cartoon on it (with hitler at the end) and one of the censored 11.

marnerbroman 3 years ago
Yes it is, look it is blackface. Yet it is not surprising considering it was made by whites.
87fg 3 years ago
what blackface?
marnerbroman 3 years ago
blackface was the central theme in the mintrel show, when white actors would put on brown make-up and act black based on stereotypes of the day. This was common in movies, vaudeville, and, theatrical cartoon shorts. I'm guessing your white seeing as you do not know.
87fg 3 years ago
ok two things
did you know that whiteface is regular clowns and yet redheads are ok with it
this is a a afican boy not a white guy in blackface and inki is doing "cavemen" things
don't let those GEICO Cavemen hear this they may find it offensive
why do
marnerbroman 3 years ago
Regular clowns were not intended to demean a race of people. This is why racial reconciliation is not possible. Clearly you have never seen racist caricature before. Also I would like to point out the fact that the first homo sapiens came from Africa. I'm merely pointing out historical fact, racism is always part of pop culture.

why do defend it so?
that kid looks and reminds me of me: adventurous, silent, and curious
true some "PIC" cartoons are offensive but not all some like this one is being wrongfully grouped with the bad ones
marnerbroman 3 years ago 3
I do not want it censored, because it has historical value. A vast majority of whites hold negative views of blacks, it is silly to say it is a more tolerant society.

This comment has received too many negative votes show

marnerbroman, it's silly to compare blackface minstrel shows with clowns' white faces. The former was meant as racial mockery, the latter was not. BIG difference.
And 87fg, it's foolish to take relatively trivial misunderstandings like that and make the giant leap of "this is why racial reconciliation is not possible." (!!!)

The Mynah Bird is the most powerful character in the Warner Bros. cartoon universe.
mikecronis 4 years ago 3
According to Reg Hartt (look him up, he's brilliant) Disney once asked Jones what the hell he was trying to say with this cartoon, to which Jones replied, "The fifth dimension". He and Clampett were both secretly very esoteric minds, and that for me is a big part of what makes the Looney Tunes legacy so endlessly fascinating.

Oh geez, just fucking stop it. Its a cartoon.
Enjoy it for what it IS.
A PRIMITIVE hunter.
It's only racist if you're ashamed of your ancestry.
I think I'm going to start screaming racist at those Geico caveman commercials.
They're denigrating white people's intelligence!
(see how fucking stupid that sounds?)
