When it comes to war movies (which I wouldn't class Battleship as, its Sci-Fi) it has to be as real as possible and follow history, Braveheart looked nice but was way off the mark, Windtalkers had a good story but the action was pure fantasy and so on.

Keep it real, if you want fantastical then watch Transformers, Lord of the Rings or Pirates of the Caribbean.

The issue with these film ideas is exactly that when you go and see a film about war, they need to have the right actors to portray the tough guy role, like Saving Private Ryan and such all the actors were tough as nails and believable as soldiers. Rihanna and Channing Tatem (Worst actor in history) cannot portray these roles and thusly these films will be shit

Obviously movie effects got much better since then, but for over all originality, and various modes used for telling stories, I think the directors on average were more creative. The only sci-fi movie you see today that actually have something to say other than showcase eye candy are based on books from the 50s 60s and 70s.
