@84jgk - It is a good time. So good that you may make life changes in order to be a better diver. It can be expensive to get started but the gear usually last for about 4-6 years before it needs replacing. To get everything you need to start can cost anywhere from $500 on up. I've considered going to Northern Michigan to do some diving. I know a guy in Traverse City who dives often. If the Asian Carp get in the Great Lakes - we're all Funked!

In WI, we just use a 'Fishing License' - but unlike 'Hook and Line' fishing we cannot spear Game Fish. Pan Fish and Rough Fish are all we are allowed. And it varies from county to county- there are certain time frames- There is a SPEARFISHING and NETTING REGULATIONS on line or in most stores that sell Fishing Licenses.
@VinnyB33 - Yes, same license as regular fishing is required.... BUT - you cannot shoot game fish (Walleye, Pike, BASS, MUSKIE, SAUGER, CATFISH, and STURGEON. Every State has a regulation booklet IF they allow Spearfishing. Some states don't allow it, some counties don't allow it. And there are some areas where it is regulated by the time of the year. For example: Can't shoot Perch in Lake Michigan (WI side) until June 16th and then you can only shoot 5. Where inland H2O, you can shoot 25.

@misper34 - A JBL WOODY is a good Carp Gun. JBL makes several 'cheaper' guns. BUT, they are not the best for Panfish, if you decided to explore other options. I recommend HAMMERHEAD SPEARGUNS. They can do it all. If you are going to try to shoot them in the Midwest - wisconsin? go with a 75cm or a 3-4 ft gun. Ask me any questions you have. Good Luck!

@bl3ujay07 - Depends on how much you want to spend. Could Spend $50 on a speargun or Hundreds. I like the Hammerheads which are about $150. You only need a 75cm gun for Wisconsin Waters. You will also need a 5mil wetsuit. (open cell interior) 2 piece. good for cold water and fine for warm. then you will need fins. Freediving are better, but scuba fins will work. You also need a mask and a simple snorkel. And a Weightbelt with weight.
@deanmaso - We have "TRIED" eating these. But I personally think they taste like mud. We do have a couple of spearo's that come with us, that keep them and eat them. I rarely shoot carp anymore. I don't have a place to dispose of the carcass's.
@whopperhead theres a trick to it...it australia if the water is clear and clean there edible...try filliting then and just basically flour on both sides, make sure pan and oil are hot then cook them like that alot of people make the mistake of not pre heating the pan and they fall apart :)

Nice video. Do you need a special license in WI to do this? Here in Ohio we only need a fishing license to bowfish/spearfish for what the division of wildlife classifies as 'forage fish' like the common carp.
@robertfasani - They are INVASIVE here in Wisconsin and eat the plants our GAME FISH call home. Basically destroying the habitat for our native fish. The carp have no predators and populate like crazy. If and when the carp get SO BAD the government steps in and sometimes will poison the whole lake, in order to kill off the carp. I know us killing carp pisses a lot of people off, but unless they actually live her and see the damage- it's hard for them to understand.

I bodyboard in lake superior in the winter using a 6/5/4 Quiksilver wetsuit, is that the type of suit that would work for this. or do i need something else? Also what do you use for your feet ,just curious? I use a 5mm fin sock and a 3mm fin sock over it plus my fins and my feet are always the first to go cold, just wondering if you found anything that works well? thanks
We use 5mil OPEN CELL INTERIOR wetsuits. Very Warm! I also found OPEN CELL SOCKS and GLOVES from HAMMERHEADSPEARGUNS. com - Our Hands and Feet are the first to go too.

u can get this bebes in ebay for cheap and really good quality I have a JBL CARABINE D7 its perfect for lakes were i spearfish il indiana and kentucky lakes it cost about 80 dollars plus the mask 50 plus the snorquel about 25 and the fins another 30 or 40all together was 135 with shipping and all
i dive the ocean and just my fins alone set me back $130 plus the suit, mask, knife, custom made gun, weights and belt, socks, gloves, and license which all together runs about $700..... you got it lucky bro. never move to the coast.....
I don't eat them- cause I don't enjoy the taste of 'arm pit' but, some people do, and actually ask me to bring them to them. otherwise they go in a farmers field or in my garden. They are a problem in these lakes and I know we aren't doing alot- but it's fun.
I'm not sure on the exact details. MN should have a "trapping/spearing" regulations- it would be in there. Or might even be in the regular Fishing regulations. It is something you should find out before going and shooting fish. Check the MN DNR (game conservation) web site.

Nice video. Do you need a special license in WI to do this? Here in Ohio we only need a fishing license to bowfish/spearfish for what the division of wildlife classifies as 'forage fish' like the common carp.

@robertfasani - They are INVASIVE here in Wisconsin and eat the plants our GAME FISH call home. Basically destroying the habitat for our native fish. The carp have no predators and populate like crazy. If and when the carp get SO BAD the government steps in and sometimes will poison the whole lake, in order to kill off the carp. I know us killing carp pisses a lot of people off, but unless they actually live her and see the damage- it's hard for them to understand.

keep it up fellas. i hear that locals like your self pull out up to 5 percent of the nitrogen in these lakes from just carp. Thank you sincerely for making it possibler to pull out walleye and other semi cold water species out of these lakes. Yeah guys in any natural resource class i have taken the prof finds informs me of a different way that carp are not good for limnologic processes. Whopperhead is making the world a better place

@underwaterireland - All the carp we shoot/kill we use for fertilizer. They all get used. Sometimes people will ask us for a couple so they can eat them and we gladly give them to them. I've had carp "fried" and "smoked" - I can not stand the taste. and they are invasive here in Wisconsin and destroy our lakes.

@sledboss11 cost for Wetsuit: $180 - $400, Fins: $75- $375, Mask: $25- $125, Socks: $20-40, Gloves: $20 - 60, Float: $25- $200, Speargun: $50-$300.
My advice is for wetsuits: buy OPEN CELL INTERIOR, NEOPRENE EXTERIOR. I can give more and better recommendations through Private Message.

@SkythMassaghet - Here in the US they destroy lakes and rivers, they eat the food our Native Game fish would eat and eventually the numbers in game and pan fish go down. I'm thinking that because our waters aren't as clean as over in Europe that could be why they taste so bad, They are very nasty tasting, I've tried to eat them. for me I like PERCH, BLUEGILL, CRAPPIE, WALLEYE. If we shoot carp- they are used for Fertilizer. not just tossed.

I bodyboard in lake superior in the winter using a 6/5/4 Quiksilver wetsuit, is that the type of suit that would work for this. or do i need something else? Also what do you use for your feet ,just curious? I use a 5mm fin sock and a 3mm fin sock over it plus my fins and my feet are always the first to go cold, just wondering if you found anything that works well? thanks

We use 5mil OPEN CELL INTERIOR wetsuits. Very Warm! I also found OPEN CELL SOCKS and GLOVES from HAMMERHEADSPEARGUNS. com - Our Hands and Feet are the first to go too.

I don't eat them- cause I don't enjoy the taste of 'arm pit' but, some people do, and actually ask me to bring them to them. otherwise they go in a farmers field or in my garden. They are a problem in these lakes and I know we aren't doing alot- but it's fun.

I'm not sure on the exact details. MN should have a "trapping/spearing" regulations- it would be in there. Or might even be in the regular Fishing regulations. It is something you should find out before going and shooting fish. Check the MN DNR (game conservation) web site.
