This isn't a inherited trait, as much as it is a learned skill. Look up the book Mental Math by Art Benjamin if you want to figure out how its done. The main tricks are learning mnemonics and calculating from left to right. (I actually got the multiplication answers faster than he did, and anyone else can too with practice.) Also, he doesn't come up with the answer instantaneously. When he reads off multiple digits, he's calculating as he goes along.

This is not the whole thing. later in the episode, they take Scott to have a scan done on his brain (I think it was an EMT scan, though I could be wrong), and that explains how he can do this. Apparently, the part of his brain that holds his math skills is not where it should be, it's moved to the part of his brain that controls motor skills. In other words, math literally comes as easy as walking to him. Once he's learned how, it becomes automatic.

Savants can do the same thing he does, some math, some arts, some reading, some perfect memory etc. Still, hands down to this guy and the rest of his kind. Savants are geniuses on a particular subject, most of the time they can't function normally, like dress theirselves or speak straight sentences the genius part balances it out. This guy, however, can function as a normal being, and still have math genius.

Britain and the colonies (including what is now the U.S.) dd not switch until 1752, however. So, between the date of the change in 1582 and 1782, he would have to know WHERE the date was. Also, if he is doing days mathematically, even allowing for leap years, he would have to also add/subtract for the change in calendars.

I mean the human brain takes about 2% of the human weight, but can use up to 20% of the oxygen. If only a certain percentage is used, let's say for instance 10%, not only would that be a waste of oxygen. But if there were such humans with those particular brains, they would have been canceled out because of natural selection. I mean the best brain would be a very small and very efficient one
