  • Really enjoy Mr. Osborne's playing, thanks for posting!

  • Regardless of who his influences are, he plays very well.

  • Everybody wants to be Buddy Rich, but without the talent

  • i know im a bit late in responding, but come off it,are you really trying to tell us that donny isnt a rip off of buddy rich,i am one of buddys biggest fans and have been for 40 years, just look at the posture and the way he plays and even donny has the same colour kit,he even wipes the sweat off his nose the same way buddy did,im not critacle of dick or donny to me it doesnt matter we all copy someone, anyway if you want to see the master go to geoffos, cheers

  • Once again, Buddy Rich protege and Mel Torme's exclusive touring and recording drummer for over 20 years DONNY OSBORNE will appear at Rob Cook's vintage drum show. This year the date will be Sunday, May 17th for a clinic and master class. Plan on attending as this is the best, biggest and longest running show going in the drum world today. Multi-platinum recording artist, original founding member of CHICAGO, DANNY SERAPHINE will headline that same day!! Danny and Donny...Not to be missed!!

  • Thanks for the kind comments about my client Donny Osborne. You can see other videos on him at my page posting as booksdates. Also, if your support this artist please pickup his CD at CD BABY. Regards- Steve P, Agent, Producer, Promoter.

  • Too bad more people are not aware of what an absolute Monster Player Donny Osborne is.

Closest thing to Buddy Rich there ever was.

    Superb ~

  • donny sucks....just kidding i agree. In terms of talent and style he's almost buddy.

  • true story

  • Hi Mark - Well, all those hours of replication from Buddy, Donny's template & mastery has to be close to Buddy's...that is what replication does...but you have to hand it to Mr Osborne for never giving up under Buddy's hardnosed tutorship - many people wouldn't have lasted. BTW...Dick Cully is amazing with a complete style of his own.

  • Hi Harry - I agree about Donny. He's a fantastic player. Got to see him sit in with Buddy's band backing Mel Torme. Superb drummer.

As for Mr. Cully, he and I do not like each other. I've seen him, and he is a complete rip-off of Buddy. Same color drums, same set up, same stick tricks, same licks, etc., etc.

I feel the man is not original at all. Just don't like copycats AT all.

If there was never a Buddy Rich, Cully would have been a taxi driver.

Hope all is well with you, Harry ~

  • Hi Mark - Oh dear! Have you met the Cully personally? I agree...he has to pursue his own style...

  • Hi Harry - no, not in person, but I did leave a few comments on one of his videos and he responded in a most uncivilized manner.

Oh, well, such is life. The one thing I value most in a Jazz musician is being an individual, if at all possible.

I don't remember, but when I sent you that list, was there any Mel Lewis on it?

I've been on a real ML kick lately. When I was younger I could not understand his concept. Now I do, and he's my favorite drummer/musician. Favorite drum soloist, as well.

  • Hi Mark - He did what? Uncivilised manner??What did you tell him? Even if you were not courteous, he has to respond with authority to dismantle your 'ungentlemanly' conduct for which I am sure was not the case. Silly if so, because cully should be aware the music is an emotional vibe that elevates the senses and integrates with association...no wonder you hate his brilliance. Anyway...must check to see if Mel Lewis is checklisted...tell you later.

  • Mark - Yep, you made the inclusion in your list. 'Mel was a God you said':

'Mel Lewsi Jazz at the Smithsonian: The Solo on the eye of the hurricane is mind blowing'

    Your exact words...lol!

Ps. Cully is not happy that he doesn't receive recognition. He would have apologised to you if you alluded him to the fact that he doesn't require anyone's authority for him to feel good about his drumming. It appears the reason he tries to 'copy'. He is masterful! Totally unnecessary for him!

  • Glad I included Mel on the list, Harry.

There is a lot of him (but not enough) to see here on YT, and you can find some in my favorites.

If you ever have the chance to get the Jazz at the Smithsonian DVD with Mel's band, you will see what I consider the best band in the land.

  • Yes, I will do so Mark after I finish making a fresh application for a job at the Lehman Broths website. lol!

Seriously, yes I definately will on the former...(well I've done the latter already). Thanks Mark.

  • @MarkR1957 This comment is ridiculous. You hate copycats, but Osborne is terrific and original and Cully stinks and is a copycat, come on...

  • Don't forget Butch Miles. His style was VERY similar to Buddy's and they had a love/hate relationship. But in the end it was Buddy that recommended Butch to Count Basie.
