"What this did was politicize religion in England."
This is the most rediculous comment in the film, yet still the crux of it. Religion was nothing but political, persecuting Catholics.
Before the gunpowder conspiracy:
Being a Catholic was punishible by death under Elizabeth, and later James. James broke his promise. He used the Catholics(even getting the Pope's favor) then turned on them, reimposing the policy of Catholicism as a crime.
James was disliked by the masses at first. His mother Mary, and the appointments under his authority as King were Catholics and the people were pissed off. There was revolution in the air to throw James out. Suddenly the Gunpowder Plot changed all of that. King James was loved and a few Jesuits paid the price for treason. But the legacy was that James line ruled England for another 80 years, with Catholics getting all of the Royal job appointments. Jesuits don't blow people up, they poison them
There is a story that James's aunt, Queen Elizabeth, was poisoned a few times. Finally dying from poison that was placed on her saddle that went through the clothes and to the skin, She was dead within hours. It was said that she was healthy as a horse that morning, singing songs, and wanted to go riding.

LOL... They do poison them, and maybe that's why they failed. Not enough practice.
