  • BROOMSTICKS AT THE READY!!!! FIRE! WELL DONE GENERAL!

  • @EmperorOfEurope yes those are the right words, it's the "substitutiary locomotion" spell. idk about them being latin though

  • Empire!

  • These have got to be the best opening credits ever!! Loved how Doug Walker acknowledged them when he did his Top Ten Worst Cliches.

  • @medea1990 They sure are! And thanks for the info. ;-)

  • These were the good old days when Disney was classical, and magical instead of the TV trash they have on now.

  • OMG, I forgot just how good - no, make that great - the score for this film is!!

Like many here, this brings back such memories - I'd say that this is probably my all time fave live action Disney film!

  • I wish I lived during the middle ages. I'd burn a witch.

  • yay! arrived at this video direct from watching a vid' on the Bayeux Tapestry

  • if people dont like the video y watch? just to thumbs down?

  • A modern recreation of the Bayeux tapistry!

  • <3

  • 2:58 thumbs up if you thought of this while watching the marching statues from harry potter and the deathly hallows pt 2.

  • I don't remember Nazis being in the Bayeux Tapestry.

  • wow, I know it has been uploaded for a couple of years, but just found it, thanks!!!

    I love this movie :)

  • This is the only Disney film I was allowed to see as a child. Probably because it had little enough 'American' stuff for my parents to be satisfied. Even now I can hum/whistle this theme by heart.

  • Oh God this brings back so many memories!

and I think this is by far one of the best opening credits of all time!

  • @thedarksaviour755 I agree. It is just powerful and tells the story of the movie in one tapestry.

  • @thedarksaviour755 history would also have to agree, i.e. the Hastings tapestry

  • I used to watch this movie like 5 times a day when I was a kid xD

  • Does anyone know the exact incantation the soldiers sing at 2:57 ?

It sounds like " Treguna mecoidis trecorum cetisdi ", but I'm not sure.

I'll be interested to learn what it means in Latin (if that's really the language they use).

Anyway, thanks LoreneFaith for sharing these videos. They give us warmth by bringing up so much memories. God bless you ! :-)

  • @EmperorOfEurope I cannot answer your question but thanks for the kind remarks, and God bless you too!

  • @LoreneFaith I can tell ya: it's the spell for Substitutiary Locomotion: "Treguna Mekoides Tracorum Satis Dee."

  • @EmperorOfEurope Treguna Mekoides Trecorum Satis Dee. It's the word to the spell for Substitutiary Locomotion, the spell that vexes Eglantine--the main character--until the near end of the film. In the battle scene at the end of the film (with the German soldiers), you'll hear the soldiers chant this up until they get right on top of the soldiers.

  • @meg1rudy You'll hear the INVISBLE soldiers...the GERMAN soldiers. Sorry I wasn't clearer on that last post.

  • @EmperorOfEurope Treguna Mekoides Trecorum Satis Dee ^_^

  • @EmperorOfEurope Tragona Macoites Tragorium Santis Stee, it's the 'Substitutiary Locomotion' Spell :)

  • @EmperorOfEurope Later in the movie they show the phrase written down, which is "Treguna Mekoides Trecorum Satis Dee." Though "mekoides" appears to be ancient Greek, the other words appear Latin. The entire phrase appears to be gibberish and not have any meaning, though the phrase "TRES CORVM SATIS DI" appears to roughly translate to "3 hearts satisfy the gods" or "3 hearts are sufficient for the day" possibly a reference to the 3 children in the movie

  • @EmperorOfEurope It's Treguna, Mekoides, Trecorum, Sadis Dee. If you watch the film, you'll find it's actually [SPOILER ALERT!] the spell needed to bring inanimate objects to life. As for whether or not the words have any literal meaning, I don't think so. I wouldn't think so, but I can't say for sure.

  • Comment removed

  • @EmperorOfEurope "Treguna Mekoides Trecorum Satis Dee" is the correct spelling. In the movie, it is the spoken spell for Substitutiary Locomotion which brought the armor to life to fight the Nazis. It means "Giving Life to Things Without." However, it is pseudo-Latin and Greek, making it nonsense. A literal translation from Greek and Latin would get you "Rough up three goats sufficiently until they become dizzy." Or something like that!

  • @EmperorOfEurope "Treguna Mekoides Tracorum Satis Dee"

  • @EmperorOfEurope "Treguna Mekoides Trecorum Satis Dee" It's the spell for substitutiary locomotion but I don't think it's Latin.

  • @EmperorOfEurope Hello, there! I've look for it in the Internet to find that is: Treguna mekoides trecorum satis Dee. Its just nonsense words. But are rythmic, aren't they?

  • @EmperorOfEurope ht(TAKE out THIS whole SPACE)tp://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s320x320/225632_172266516164044_124443477613015_427974_3146491_n.jpg (you might need facebook)

  • @EmperorOfEurope treguna mekoidies tregorum satis dee

  • I am not the kind of guy that only looks to the past e ignore the present. But it's sad to see that they don't make more fantasy child movies like that. Today to call your attention, they just full it of CGI stuff without that powerfull images and music that really catch your imagination.

  • @fernandoaldado I totally agree. CGI does not carry the same impact and magic as true artistic form does, and the painstaking work of frame to frame drawing. CGI is just hollow.

  • Oh man I never noticed how perfectly they made this opening, with each picture shown having something to do with their assigned role. Right from the Director of Cinematography with him holding a lantern (as they're responsible for doing the lighting) to the Editor having a guy sat at his desk looking at plans XD. I love it!

  • Does this movie come in Blu-Ray? I want to buy a copy so desperately. I love, love this movie as a kid then and as an adult now. I have two kids living next door whom I love to share this movie! Ithink every child should see this along with Mary Poppins!

  • I always loved this movie as a kid!!! My favorite movie by far!!! I haven't seen it since I was about 7 so I'm buying a copy soon! I always thought it was so eerie and mysterious in a good way with the ties to medieval and witchcraft!

  • Angela's last movie she made in a hollywood studio... she's still the actress we all know and love on and off broadway and J.B. Fletcher on tv's Murder, She Wrote

  • This was the first movie with a crossover between Live Action and Animation I've ever seen.

    :')

  • I loved this movie as a kid, and I will always continue to love it. This movie will always be a part of my life as I continue on as it was a portal to my imagination, and partly responsible for my love of history.

Whenever I decide to have kids, I will make sure that they watch this film so they can experience the magic of this wonderful film.

  • @metalhead531 It is amazing how a film we see or a story we hear as a child can have such a huge impact on who we become. I have some movies, stories and songs that are a big part of who I am too.

  • @LoreneFaith

Would you mind to share some of the titles ?

  • @metalhead531 Mine too! My whole love of history can almost be traced back to this movie!

  • Every time I hear an old disney song, I thank god for the Sherman Bros.

  • @kingofthemooners09 Me too! I am still waiting for them to release the movie that has been made about them. Can't wait to see it!

  • @LoreneFaith saw it a month ago and it was amazing, I didn't know they wrote that many songs.

  • traguna mcoyds trakorem satistee.....

funny how i suck at languages yet this is imprinted on my brain, i guess you rememebr the things you enjoy and interest you!

Excellent film, wishing i had it still now!

  • Comment removed

  • @TheWaterPower lol i think you're right its just my spelling of the words sucks xD

  • Treguna, Mekoides, Trecorum, Satis Dee...

  • Probably one of the most perfect movies ever.

  • @timeXsong Agree!

  • god how i love the old Disney films, dam now this take's me back to my childhood :P

    pure epic sauce right here

  • @cabellism I love them too and so glad that I was able to grow up when these movies were new! It really was a magical time to be a kid :)

  • How come I seem to be the only one who notices the weird text colours in the title during this video. Are they meant to have relevance?

    "In knobs brmtis" in red

    "Beds and Oosck" in black.

    Confusing.

  • @TheColaGoodfellow i noticed it as well. I thought it may have some relevance to the bayeux tapestry, on which the artwork of this title is based, but i've checked photos of it, and it only has black lettering. Who knows, maybe they thought it might fit

  • Full of win. :)

  • This Opening is Magical.

Mary Poppins and this movie have the best Openings from Walt Disney films.

And they will be forever a Masterpiece

  • @sitadown I totally agree. They just don't make them like this anymore and yes, they are magical.

  • Holy shit! I haven't seen this in years!

Thanks for the flashbacks to childhood!

  • They wrote so many wonderful songs! I want to see the movie that was made about them.

  • I love the kind of music the sherman brothers did. They made great scores that fit whatever movie they did.

  • Best opening ever.

  • These might be my favorite opening credits to a movie. EVER. And that's saying a lot, considering the amount of movies I've seen in my lifetime.

I was taking an online Art History class, in which the Bayeux Tapestry was displayed and discussed. I immediately figured out that these opening credits were a clever homage to it. ^^

  • I agree it is one of the most amazing film openings ever and is a tribute to the Bayeux tapestry style.

  • @LoreneFaith I think what would be really cool is if someone would actually make the awesome title opening into a real tapestry. Although...that may lead to the danger of future generations believing that these events happened in 1066 as well XD

  • @ZomboDeZany That would be an amazing tapestry and would belong in a Disney museum!

  • I dunno' - It's a close call between this and the Watchmen opening credits :P

  • Comment removed

  • @Ribonuke The Vikings opening uses a Bayeux tapestry style too

  • Comment removed

  • @WillScarlet16: I agree, and the funny thing is that if one is not paying attention carefully to the tapestry, it's almost like they're telling you the story before showing the story. That's one of the interesting parts about this.

This is one of my favourite films and it's glad for me to see bits and pieces and the entire film on YouTube.

  • One of the best Disney films ever made! It's also has one of the best film score too! The music in the opening is the best! This film could put modern Disney movies to shame!

  • Well said and I totally agree :)

  • I knoww the music is so goodd :D The mary poppins music is fantastic too! I reallyy want the trumpet parts for both the openings loll

  • @MotownConnoisseur30 It can and does.

  • @MotownConnoisseur30 Back then I prefered this hundred times over Mary Poppins ... the quest for a magical spell to help battling a german invasion of GB was just far more epic than taking care of some brats and moralize them ...

  • @deusirae76 And Mary Poppins, whilst one of my fave films as a kid, always seemed to be to...sugary...this film has actual adventure in it :D

  • @ZomboDeZany I loved Julie Andrews, and Dick Van Dike was funny, but there was no real plot ... the football match from B&B was even better than the animated parts of MP.

  • @MotownConnoisseur30 plus it does sound british!!!

  • Lovely memories! I watched this film many times when I was a kid. I was amazed by its magic!

  • It truly is magical. I think part of the reason is that there is no CGI.

  • Is it sad that the title sequence is my favorite part of the movie?

  • It is not sad at all. It is one of the best musical pieces of the movie and the look of the medieval tapestry is so meaningful and mysterious.

  • I like how the figures on the tapestry reflect the credits being listed - the builders for the art and set directors, the weaver for costumes and hairstylists, the monks for the screenwriters, the two musicians for the Shermans, the dancers for the choreographer, and best of all, for the technical consultants - a fortuneteller!

  • I always thought it was pretty funny how they put Nazis on a Medieval tapestry.

  • Kind of a surprise at the end of the tapestry isn't it :)

  • This movie is now on a Special Edition DVD!

  • Disney probably added the nazis because they thought, aww it'll be mostly kids watching this anyway.

  • Ohh I adore this movie, in my opinion the BEST Disney movie :D EVER. And yes, this intro' is classic and lovely, beautiful artwork and music. Thank you for posting it, so nice. Hehe, I watched this with my Grandma last night, she likes it too :->

  • I am glad that you enjoy the post and it is wonderful that you and your Grandma shared a time together watching the movie :)

  • You'd never expect to see what you see at 2:34.

    Nazi submarine sending invaders ashore.

The Union Jack proudly standing against brutal gunners.

Ghost armor lead by a witch chanting and charging the submachineguns fire.

    Just amazing...

  • amen

  • It was very clever of them to compare the attempted Nazi invasion to the last time England was invaded by William the Conqueror in 1066. Probably also why they used scene reminiscent of the Bayeaux Tapestry.

  • @rebahsol difference was that william was successful

  • The music score, epecially in this opening, is pure classic. Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson are real legends, and the film is definitely one of the better films that came out after Walt's death.

This is also the film that inspired me to become an artist.

  • I totally agree! it is great to hear that it has also become an inspiration to you as well.

  • This score for the flim is IMO the serman Bothers best work

  • most amazin film ever made

  • Fabulous!!!! I know it by heart! Watched this movie thousand of times ;-) it always gives me a thrill when I listen to this theme! Wonderful.

  • It does the same thing to me!

  • this is supposed to be in the style of the bayeux tapestry isnt it?

  • I believe that it is. Isn't that the tapestry that portrayed the battle of Hastings?

  • Well consider the Battle of Hastings in 1066 was the last time England was ever successfully invaded, that wouldn't surprise me.

  • I love this movie so much!

  • are you able to send me this or at least send the music of the score???

  • the age of not believing ... ha ha ha

  • This is one off my favorite Disney Live Action Films.

  • (L)!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love this... Disney films made me an Anglophile! My favorite part is the little tune at 2:07

  • @redxherring Are we twins separated at birth? I feel exactly the same way!

  • Somehow I'm fairly certain the 10th century Norman authors of the Bayeux Tapestry didn't originally have Nazi's with automatic weapons in the final draft :P

  • They looked into the future.

  • @oregongrap Actually, I think you mean the 11th Century Normans XD

  • @oregongrap I don't know if anyone else ever mentioned this, but it occurred to me that there are shades of irony there, when you consider that this sequence depicts heroic (enchanted) English soldiers repelling an invasion of England, while the original Bayeux Tapestry depicts the successful invasion OF England.

  • @oregongrap Hollywood History ftw

  • 2.14

  • Whats with that?

    Wat is daar mee?

  • Yea this realled to scare me too!!

  • This opening always gave me goosebumps when I was little!

  • ya im not a fan of disney movies RE: the over singing that aquaints them, but i dont mind the singing in this movie.

    -tragoona maquoitiz trakorum satisdi

  • this video is creepy and i can't watch it without being scared

Which was creepier? The music? The eerie chants? The paintings? Or the fish creature and the lion scene?

    it creeps me out anyhow

  • I'm guessing you haven't seen the movie, 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks'? It's actually an innocent kid's movie. Cute, and funny.

  • You're not alone. I love this opening but when I was little, the fish creature creeped me out.

  • love this movie so much

  • 1:48-2:06 sounds like the Music out of The Jungle Book

  • The Jungle Book was made of of almost entirely re-used material, charachters, music etc. because Disney was having financial trouble at the time.

  • Same people who did the score for jungle book did this movie.

  • This always scared me silly when I was younger, lol!

Can't figure out why though o.O

  • It always used to scare me too; especially the floating armour during the final battle. But now I can appreciate the film for it's dark beauty and wonderful score.

  • What a beautiful hidden gem Bedknobs and Broomsticks is. The music is among my favorites from Disney. I don't have a lesser favorite. And the story, are you kidding?! Wizards don't just exist in Hogwartz. We have our classic Disney right here!

  • It has so much wonderful music in it. It is such a fun movie!

  • I love this scene! It has been a long time since I have seen this movie!

  • This was one of my favorite movies when I was growing up. I have it on DVD now...beautiful movie.

  • same here...

  • I saw it, it's like a medieval movie, like

    "The Ladyhawke".

  • I LOVE the part from 2:23 - 2:33. I LOVE the whole intro music. Heck, I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

  • I realy like the way even though these films are for kids, they teach people alot of history, that i notice know i am older but i wouldnt off when i was younger, like the way in this film they show all different people from the british empire. and the way they portray British history and culture.

  • These films were very educational in my opinion and magical!

  • Perdona, solo conocia lo del partido de futbol!Magnifico!

  • No lo conocia - me encanta!

  • that's funny!! you found my awesome comment

  • My favorite movie...I've always loved it...

  • that black cat used to scare me when i was little

  • I like how the Nazis in the boats are tiny compared to the ones on the beach!

  • This brings back memories.

  • Best opening credits ever. I love how they took inspiration from the Bayeaux Tapestry.

  • OH this was one of my favorite childhood movies..still got it on VHS *-*

  • Listen around 1:28-1:40 and you will hear a little bit of the deleted song "A Step in the Right Direction". This song was intended for the movie but ultimately dropped. It can now only be found on the movie soundtrack. I don't know if it was ever filmed.

  • @DisneyFan16672 The "Step in the Right Direction" sequence was filmed, but the material has since been lost, presumed destroyed. All that survives are some photographs of the scene taken as it was filmed. These are available on most editions of the DVD, and have been assembled in order and set to the music.

Also present in this overture is a snippet of Mr. Brown's song, "With a Flair", which was also deleted from the theatrical cut but restored to most later TV edits and all DVD editions.

  • I wonder where I could buy the DVD version of this movie because I heard the DVD version has an extended version of this film.

  • I have not heard that there is an extended version. I would love to see it myself! I would recommend that you search on amazon or ebay for it. If I find a good source I will let you know!

  • I love this movie- The opening scene music is my favoite from the film.

  • It is a wonderful music score and very medieval!

  • I own this on the 1989 VHS.

  • Comment removed

  • Same here

  • Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi are damn good ScreenPlayers.

  • David Tomlinson starred in Herbie the Love Bug as well.

  • 00:4s there's a devil in the far right

  • I just thought how cool it would be if Britain had a national anthem like the music at 02:34 lol. Very bold and patriotic indeed :P

  • It would make a wonderful national anthem!

  • Well I know if I had a country, Irwin Kostal's Overture version of Substitutiary Locomotion would be the national anthem. In fact, the whole overture would be because it's too damn awesome for words. I love the beginning, a little mystic but heavy on the boldness! Love it! Love every single second of this piece of music!

  • What an awesome country you would have!

  • This is wonderful! I just watched the movie and was curious if anyone had posted scenes from it on YouTube. Yaaay! Thanks for posting this.^.^

  • Great stuff isn't it!

  • Disney sure has been good to David Tomlinson. He's co-starred with both Julie Andrews and Angela Lansbury in two great musical classics! That's some pretty fantastic company, especially for a singer!

  • He stars in two of my favorite Disney classics. I wonder what else he had a major role in.

  • Well, we certainly can't forget Herbie: The Love Bug. Although, he was the bad guy in that one.
