I know, it's annoying! That's the coolest thing about the '91 trip, they actually gave it a full-blown Daylight consist. I've also noticed that they don't seem to run as long of a train as they did on this trip, either.
@NorfolkAndWestern578 I know, I totally get that!, I was on the Fall Colors Excursion from Minneapolis - Winona and there were only two Daylight Cars on the whole entire train. I meaning, me being 19 and living my 3 year old childhood dream is one thing. but I sort of wanted the WHOLE Daylight package, Steam Locomotive and Cars. She's a Streamliner, shouldn't they keep her with just the cars with the Same, Beautiful color scheme?
wow u really r an asshole...i hope 4449 runs over ur sorry ass 1day....and then on lookers will light ur sorry ass remains on fire!!!!!!!!!! dont worry...we'll make sure 4449 is around 4 a looooooong time!
hell throw him in the fire box! maybe not in the 4449 but find the smallest locomotive you can find and throw him in the fire...then we'll see how small steam engines can still kick his ass!
wow is that bias. If you're going to fuck up what made and still makes this country great, then you can't be selective you son of a bitch. The washington monument could be a great quarry. Fuck you and leave steam alone, and the washington monument too if its not too much trouble. fuck you. you have an unbalanced mind. Mabey you should put some counterwieghts in it from the northern you scrapped. Yeah thats right everybody. this motherfucker scrapped a northern. Kill him!!!!!!!!!!!!
My friend, there are less than 180 steam engines operating in our Country and NONE run on a regular basis. There is no good reason for them to be parked and gutted and scrapped.4449 and 700 run MABE 2 times a year IF WE ARE LUCKY. I'm prepared to do ABSOLUTLY ANYTHING TO SAVE THEM!
thank you!!!! he said this engine wasted water by boiling it. if this was true, we couldnt have tea, coffee, or any of that. thanks again for blocking that asshole. he probably lives with his mom.
Awesome video of 4449!!! Thanks for posting the great footage!!! We're about due for another "Railfair" in Califonia...hopefully next year! 2009 will be ten years since the last one in 1999.
Diesel oil prices have increased, true. However, the total cost of operation of diesel locomotives remains cheaper than steam driven locomotives by a factor of at least 80.
These things are old, dangerous, (more dangerous than diesel locomotives), inefficient, polluting and cost more to maintain than diesel locomotives.
It is long past time to cut this junk metal apart and melt the metal into new products!
MY GOD IN HEAVEN! She won't be parked! she was built to pull the most famous trains on the SOUTHERN PACIFIC-FAST!! She won't be scrapped! Not on my watch!
See boys and girls this is what happens from years of inbreeding. What you end up with is Cockroach, He is the old relic, he needs to be parked, parted and melted down..These steam locomotives will be around years from now, and ole cockroach will be bones in a casket.
You know so much about inbreeding, you must have practiced it yourself! Okay with me, say what you want. Exercise your 1st amendment right. I encourage you.
These old relics are headed for the scrap yard to be cut into pieces and melted down for the materials. These will make nice ship siding, sea bouys or anchor chain.
What a fitting end for an old steam driven relic! I have my gauntlets, coveralls, googles, helmet, plasma cutter & oxy-acytelene torches ready to deliver the coup-de-gras!
This is just AWESOME! Mostly because when these things where built steam was the major power of at the time! It must have been cool to be that close to it!
Where did all the daylight passenger cars go? The newer excursions with UP seems to have mainly UP cars...miss the Daylight stuff...anyone have video of Daylight vista dome cars?
Nah, I listened close on the tunnel shot - sounds OK - that's a rather typical rythm for a steam engine, been listening to them in video and audio recordings since I was a little kid, so that's about 30+ years of listening experience. Typical sound.
no, really listen close, one of her strokes is week. I say this because they hurt her on just about every outing. Likes to burn up her valving. I also now the engine is timed very square, meaning, you should get a power pulse every 90 degrees of rotation. Some engeins are out of time by just a little bit to ensure that you can't dead center them, since with a perfect 90 degree offset, if you try, you can actually dead center the thing.
This is why they put her in Brooklyn to do maintenance repairs and replacement for long periods of time between excursions. It is too old to be able to handle back to back operations.
actually, its the lack of dialy operation that does her in. Big machines like her don't like to sit. That said, if you really had the man power, there isn't much in the mechanicals that can go wrong that would take more than a day to fix, money and man power not witholding. Honestly, there isn't a single part on her that would take more than a half a day to make.
It truly lives up to its name as the most beautiful train in the world. It doesn't get any better than the 4449. I wish it'd come out to the midwest some time.....
What a great video, LORD HAVE MERCY the sound of the whistle, the sight of that big baby runnin throttle WIDE OPEN, MAN the scene of her comin out of the tunnel, just as the the opening scene from the movie "WHITE HEAT", yes sir thank you for the posting
man she should come back to Michigan

Smoky, sooty, stinky, inefficient means of transportation.
This thing missed it's date with the scrappers torch 60 years ago!
Time has come to, drop the fire for the last time, park it, part it, junk it out, cut it up and melt it down.
The materials can be used for newer more efficient transportation machines!
Cockroach2008 3 years ago
Ohhh good god. WAAAA! A handful of steam trains running in the US and your crying about one? Go attack the automobiles section!

This thing is old, out of date and behind the times! It should be cut down and the materials used to make new products.
I have a new cutting torch, new bottles, hoses, gloves, coveralls, goggles, boots, pry bar, mallet, and all the tools to tear this old relic apart!
It won't be long, it's days are numbered and the expense of operation is increasing. It is ready to be cut up for materials!
Park it, part it out, junk it out, cut it down, melt it!
Goodbye steam locomotive forever!

They are not inefficient! Some trains can go faster that you can ever go! So that means YOUR'RE INEFICIENT!

Incorrect!
I was not built to pull heavy loads or go fast!
For what I was built to do, I am very efficient!
This old relic should be parked, parted, junked, cut up and melted down.

Believe what you want, Danny boy!
If it won' be scrapped on your watch, you better have a lot of money at hand to keep it.
The truth is, no one is going to financially save this relic of the past. IT IS GOING TO BE SCRAPPED.
Money will slow its demise, but when the money runs out, (and it will), the cutting torches will triumph!
This is going to be cut into scrap and sent to the smelter.
In these economic times, when the materials can be used for other things, it will not be long!
Junk it!
