@eericturman Those are probably custom contact poi. In other words they are basically contact juggling balls that have been attached to a leash of some sort. Normal Practice or Fire poi do not typically lend themselves well to doing these contact rolls you are seeing. Hope this helps.
Hey man im still fighting with this derek kid about what i have posted on your video...he seems to think im hating and or cutting you down...the things i've said are just the obvious that i pointed out...not hust sitting on youtube looking for someone to ridicule...i dont ever just look to knock someones progress...so derek your still a fag and poiboi keep rockin dude..nice Hwork...lol..~~*Anarchist*~~
hey that double btb toss at the end werent both behind the back...i hate picking it apart but you put names on stuff lol...???a double btb toss would mean both tosses would leave at the same time???
To continue.... every time i experience something that i already have, it is completely new. And that leads to new ways of looking at things and maybe finally getting something down that I didnt before. Ive seen almost 90% of the moves youve shown somewhere else already, and yet i still learned new things about them. The other 10% that was new was just mindblowing!!! So just keep it up and take what the naysayers say and just brush it off your shoulders ^,^ Thanks 4 everything.
Dood, the naysayers are everywhere, even in the glowsticking community. It is normal, and it is just another one of the many walls in our way that we must break down or tread around in order to excel.
I personally could never tell someone "quit showing me stuff ive already seen, and show me YOUR moves". This is like saying "ive already hooked up with girls, so, now lets hook up with guys". Its a little retarded.
i thought the vid was wikkid! As a longstanding hoopdancer I have taken almost all my moves from inspiration from other spinners, putting my own spin on those moves. As a newer poi spinner I have been kind of horrified by the ego driven comments in alot of the tech blogs i have come across. As a community i believe we should support those who are putting themselves out there to help those who do not know all the tech moves. So thanks for sharing poiboi for your delightful creative spirit!
Ignore any negative comments, we've all learn't from other people and we always will. I'm currently working alot of the moves you are doing in this video and it has been such a big help to me.
Thanks, I'd love to see what you can do with what I'm showing here, in fact, one of the main reasons I've put these videos online was to get others working on my ideas. Just by reading peoples' comments here I've come up with some new moves I wouldn't have thought of doing otherwise.
I love this about the poi community. How sharing our ideas allows us to develop them faster :)
Man, this video has turned into a subject of controversy! So I'm contemplating whether I should be so pedantic as to say this or not, but I'm too tired to bite my tongue. I agree that this video is useful for people to learn from if they don't already know these moves. I don't care that they're not original. But I do care when you say things like "I've put these videos online to get others working on MY ideas". They're not YOUR ideas. But I'm sure it was just a communication error.
Hey, no problem man, and I just wanna say to your other posts that I totally agree that the terminology you attached to this video makes sense and is completely logical, and you clearly have a great understanding of terminology and aren't seeking credit, you simply want to help propagate ideas, which I must say is really commendable. And the way you've handled this discussion has been mature and non-confrontational, which I really admire, nice work!
hey, great stuff, nice to look at. and though some of these things have been done before, i haven't seen it, so its good to be exposed.
Watching this videos are what inspires me to keep pushing through the basics and the begginers drils and continually getting hit in the throat and face and other areas...
Keep up the good work, and i eagerly await a new video!

All theese moves are cyrilles...not called rolls its contact poi...and his are executed way cleaner...im guessing its cause he made the moves up???? ~~*Anarchist*~~
Yeah, I did learn these in the last month or so, so they're not as clean.
Contact Poi is an overall term. Like you would use Contact Staff to refer to halo rolls, steves, angel rolls etc., Contact poi refers to arm rolls, leg rolls, chest rolls, propellors etc.
You are totally right on this point, "contact poi" refers to any means of manipulating the poi without gripping it, just like contact staff, so while there are Contact jugglingesque movements that fall under that title, contact staff style moves also fall under that title. Maybe there needs to be new terminology to differntiate the two? Like, "ball-contact" moves and "tether-contact" moves. Those are just examples, but hopefully you know what I mean.
This is true, and even then a lot of these moves have an incredibly distinct Ronan feel to it - like a lot of the throws and contact moves are exactly what he does.
I don't usually say negative things about spinners, because I quickly discovered that being honest is the equivalent of being an asshole... but I was really left underwhelmed by this.
Look, obviously if I see some other spinner do something I like, I'm going to learn it. Ronan and Cyrille don't own their moves, in the same way that I don't own mine. They deserve a lot of credit for developing that style of spinning, but I'm pretty sure even they know that it's not going to be "their" moves forever. At some point someone else is going to learn those moves.
Anyhow, yeah, I learn a lot from Ronan and Cyrille, and it shows, I do a lot of the same moves as they do. But In a while, once all of this new stuff is comfortable to me I'll have some new variations on these, and I'll be sharing those as well.
Also I don't see what's wrong about learning new moves from others. All of us did this. Just like cateye hybrids used to be unique to Mel/Jon/Noel and now everyone does them, Contact poi will probably be the same in a year or 2.
Don't let trolls like this get you down...the easiest thing in the world is to be a critic. It's a lot harder to try and create something new. I used to get comments like this all the time when I started up my blog, but if you wait them out it turns out not only do they not have any new tricks to share, they also can't come up with anything new to say.
I'm not being nasty, or saying anything derogatory. I'm being honest, and for my honesty I'm called a troll.
You're right - creating something new is difficult, that's why I'm still polishing after months all the tech that I want to present. But until then, I'm not going to make blogs with existing material. Your blogs are different, as they go into deep discussion and that I can respect much more than simply recycling.
Elemensce, first off, I looked at one of your videos and you're pretty good, just wanted to start off with that.
When posting these videos I don't think if it's brand new or if maybe someone else has done move X before. I'm sharing what I'm currently doing to people who may or may not have seen it, and honestly, I don't care about being the first to do something. I learn a lot from other spinners and share as much as I can back.
Poiboi: To be entirely honest, I believe you have a tremendous amount of skill with poi, and it's evident. I definitely want to see more from you; it's just that when I see someone title their video "Tech Blog", I'm hoping to see the new ideas thye've been folling around with. I do hope I haven't offended you, as I didn't intend to, you know what I mean?
Elemensce: Sorry for the offense. You're right, your response had specific and constructive criticism to add and wasn't the blanket negativity or weasel words that others have left in this space. I should have chosen my response point more carefully to reflect its intent.
I definitely see the point about just rote copying of other peoples' tricks, and I would agree that if you've got nothing new to say then saying something for the sake of it doesn't help..
That said, I don't think that's what poiboi is contributing. I've seen either his "cateye hybrid thing" or the horizontal cateye weave he does performed before. Also, by demoing Ronan's floater move from straight-on, seeing this vid helped me figure out that I'd missed part of it due to the angle of the original vid. The volume of original material any of us adds to poi is always small compared to learning what's been done before, but I see a lot of promise here.
I agree not to let trolls bring you down, but there's a difference between trolling and constructive criticism. Don't discourage criticism, in fact, encourage it! Ask people "how can I do better?" and listen to their answers.
Look, every move is a taken from someone else. the 3 beat weave, the butterfly, crossers, hybrids, the list goes on and on.....no trick or move is made for one person, and no trick or move is invented by a person.....they are already there and just merely discovered! I really wouldn't be suprised if Ronan got his tosses from someone else, and Cyrille his contact stuff from someone else. They just happened to posted them on youtube 1st. (Well, it could be.)
Being honest isn't the equivalent of being an asshole, it's all in presentation. Sometimes a bit of constructive criticism is very helpful, but certainly requires tact. There's a difference for example between "your planes are a bit off, but still looks good" and "your planes are shit, you should just give up". I can't help but feel that sometimes the spinning community is too "hippy" and scared to say anything critical, as they're scared to offend, and the art loses out from being too kind.
i can see why why being blunt could come off as a dick...i liek constructive critisism but learning already made up moves and putting names onem' is different to...lol
were you talking to me?casue if so i have been spinning not even three years yet...lol..Ans its all contact man.wheither theirs a name added or not.CONTACT IS CONTACT....
so you think your some fuckin guru or what??and are you trying to insult me or what???your basically saying i look like i suck is that were your getting @...???lmao
I'm not sure what derek wrote, but I know these moves are defined as contact poi. But Contact Poi is a blanket term for every move where the poi is in contact with your body without you holding it (I think, anyway).
For the same reason I say "cateye vs isolation hybrid" as opposed to just "hybrid" I say things like "forearm roll" as opposed to "contact poi", since "forearm roll" is a lot more descriptive and specific.
Actually, none of these moves are "cyrilles". Saying that a particular move is "someone's", suggests ownership. If that were true, none of us would be spinning poi because the person who first did it would say "that's mine, you can't do that". In fact, the people who created club swinging might not let people do certain poi moves because they feel that they "own" such moves. Imagine where the human race would be if the first person to create the wheel wouldn't allow anybody else to use it?
what are you talking about...suggest ownership dude?lmao...i never said he owned them...those moves are basis for an entire different style of spinning...there fore he has opened the doorway for others inspired by that style to learn...DONT ARGUE WITH ME...lol especially when i didnt comment your video i commented on poiboi's video.thanks for the analogy on the wheel.and imagine where spinning would be if you didnt take any credit for creating new shit.???
snowface, by making a video and putting a name on a move (a descriptive name, it's not like I called Arm Rolls "The Poiboy") I'm definitely not taking credit for it. To be honest I don't care about credit for any move. The thought behind this blog was so that people could see what I'm working on and maybe give me new ideas. On the last blog, for example, Insignia gave me an idea regarding pentagrams which gave me a cool new move to learn.
well said. Names are there so ppl know what your talking about or describing how a move looks. Not for taking credit. I find that people from all around the world called the corkscrew different names but they all mean about the same thing. I come from glowstringing and any move that quickly hits your body and the goes back the way it came(with some exceptions) is called a wrap. A friend of mine who just moved from St Louis calls them bounces. Weirded me out but hey tha'ts sociology for ya.
I 100% agree, terminology is there for effective communication, and that should be it's primary purpose. There is a lot of different terminology for the same thing. Using your example, I used to classify a "wrap" as anything where the tether wraps around a part of the body, and being more specific, glowstringing style were "recoil wraps" and then there were through-wraps. But now I call through-wraps "carry-overs" (thanks insignia) and glowstringing just wraps, as that's better communication.
"All these moves are Cyrille's". That's what you said, I'm not sure if English is your first language, but that sounds like you're saying that they belong to him. Anybody's welcome to disagree with me if they wish, but be prepared to discuss semantics : D. "DONT ARGUE WITH ME", if you don't want people to comment on what you've said, maybe you shouldn't say anything, this is what the comment section is for, you sound like a child when you throw a tantrum over somebody disagreeing with you.
*mad props* lol I like how you put that... I'm going to look into the whole carry over thing. I haven't heard them called that before so it peaks my interest.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to put more of my own moves, but still, not every move here has to be brand new, as this mostly shows things I've been playing with recently.
Also, I edited out some of my own moves that weren't as clean as I wanted them to be. Maybe I'll put them for the next blog :)
Yeah, can't help but agree that these aren't original, which is ok, but seeing some more original stuff would be cool, or maybe showing your skills (which are exceptional, by the way) off in a performance or a video that exhibits a bit more creativity than just standing in front of a camera showing one move at a time. That's my biggest problem with all these new "Tech blog" videos; they're kinda boring unless they have anything new.
IMO tech blogs dont necessarily need be creative/original. blogs are a good way to track someones progress and document moves that person is working on (cause lets be honest, most "original" moves already exist in some form already)
sure ive seen a lot of these moves before, but usually within a performance. for example, i know ronans been doing the arm roll stuff for at least a couple years if not more. but i could never for the life of me figure them out until i saw em in one of these blogs. these vids have helped me LEARN the moves because they clearly show everything... you can say its boring to stand in front of a camera, but thats what makes it so easy to follow
Too true, in such a large community "originality" is pretty hard to come across, I guess I've just watched one too many "tech blog" videos and become a bit cynical towards them.
Maybe they are not new moves, and maybe the video gets boring, but I think that just the fact of listing or naming them and demonstrate them helps to get them more widely available and it's easier to learn than if you saw it in the middle of a performance where a lot of other things are happening at the same time.
Good points, I guess it's harder for me to enjoy these videos as I already know the moves, but I can certainly see that somebody who doesn't know the moves could enjoy it. I mean, I know I learnt a fair few moves from Meelosapien's "Me and my shadow" video.
my favourite is the second one, but this is very nice, i liked the geometric trick and of course the throws, (i love any kind of throws :-P ) I hope to spin with you one of these days! :-)
another thing, tell the folks who are entering the frame to stay out of the area where you take the video, they are disturbing the flow of the video, espicially the guy at 2:42
another awesome vid .... i really like the shapes that you put other the video and a lovely tune as well ..... could you please spend a bit more time on each trick please
VERY nice vid. Some excellent ideas at work here that I'll definitely be practicing in the coming weeks. One thing I might request is at least 5 repetitions of each trick to make it easier to pin down the motions involved. Having to retrack the video to see the detail of the movements is distracting and breaks the learning process. This vid was just over 3 minutes long...you've definitely got the time.
WTF! This is just too much to take in right now. lol, tons of awesome stuff for me to play around with in this video! I liked the stall antispin-flower hybrid combo the most :D
Another good video! You just keep churning them out man, thats awesome! I really like what you've been developing here. With some of the translation stuff with the triangle overlays, I would have done them in just Antispin. With the triangles, I would put each one on every side of s square. More interesting stuff happens.

3:05... Do a double forearm roll, (but not on the same arm! XD). It's possible and easy ;-)
And the Ronan's stack at 3:40....slow is better XD
Try to do a throw, catch it in forearm roll with the other arm, and turn in meteor ;) it's amazing...

i can see why why being blunt could come off as a dick...i liek constructive critisism but learning already made up moves and putting names onem' is different to...lol

I'm not sure what derek wrote, but I know these moves are defined as contact poi. But Contact Poi is a blanket term for every move where the poi is in contact with your body without you holding it (I think, anyway).
For the same reason I say "cateye vs isolation hybrid" as opposed to just "hybrid" I say things like "forearm roll" as opposed to "contact poi", since "forearm roll" is a lot more descriptive and specific.
poiboi07 2 years ago
I think you're dead right on these points of terminology.
NathanielEverist 2 years ago
Actually, none of these moves are "cyrilles". Saying that a particular move is "someone's", suggests ownership. If that were true, none of us would be spinning poi because the person who first did it would say "that's mine, you can't do that". In fact, the people who created club swinging might not let people do certain poi moves because they feel that they "own" such moves. Imagine where the human race would be if the first person to create the wheel wouldn't allow anybody else to use it?

agreed

grate blog. but i must say the yellow- poi are hard to see maybe a beter back drop ??? . but still nice vid
firedancingphoenix 2 years ago
what are you talking about...suggest ownership dude?lmao...i never said he owned them...those moves are basis for an entire different style of spinning...there fore he has opened the doorway for others inspired by that style to learn...DONT ARGUE WITH ME...lol especially when i didnt comment your video i commented on poiboi's video.thanks for the analogy on the wheel.and imagine where spinning would be if you didnt take any credit for creating new shit.???
snowface420 2 years ago
snowface, by making a video and putting a name on a move (a descriptive name, it's not like I called Arm Rolls "The Poiboy") I'm definitely not taking credit for it. To be honest I don't care about credit for any move. The thought behind this blog was so that people could see what I'm working on and maybe give me new ideas. On the last blog, for example, Insignia gave me an idea regarding pentagrams which gave me a cool new move to learn.
poiboi07 2 years ago
JaxFlow 2 years ago

NathanielEverist 2 years ago
*mad props* lol I like how you put that... I'm going to look into the whole carry over thing. I haven't heard them called that before so it peaks my interest.

show YOUR tricks please

I 100% agree.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to put more of my own moves, but still, not every move here has to be brand new, as this mostly shows things I've been playing with recently.
Also, I edited out some of my own moves that weren't as clean as I wanted them to be. Maybe I'll put them for the next blog :)
poiboi07 2 years ago
Yeah, can't help but agree that these aren't original, which is ok, but seeing some more original stuff would be cool, or maybe showing your skills (which are exceptional, by the way) off in a performance or a video that exhibits a bit more creativity than just standing in front of a camera showing one move at a time. That's my biggest problem with all these new "Tech blog" videos; they're kinda boring unless they have anything new.
NathanielEverist 2 years ago
IMO tech blogs dont necessarily need be creative/original. blogs are a good way to track someones progress and document moves that person is working on (cause lets be honest, most "original" moves already exist in some form already)
MsWhompwhomp 2 years ago
sure ive seen a lot of these moves before, but usually within a performance. for example, i know ronans been doing the arm roll stuff for at least a couple years if not more. but i could never for the life of me figure them out until i saw em in one of these blogs. these vids have helped me LEARN the moves because they clearly show everything... you can say its boring to stand in front of a camera, but thats what makes it so easy to follow
MsWhompwhomp 2 years ago
Too true, in such a large community "originality" is pretty hard to come across, I guess I've just watched one too many "tech blog" videos and become a bit cynical towards them.
NathanielEverist 2 years ago
Maybe they are not new moves, and maybe the video gets boring, but I think that just the fact of listing or naming them and demonstrate them helps to get them more widely available and it's easier to learn than if you saw it in the middle of a performance where a lot of other things are happening at the same time.
leospoi 2 years ago
Good points, I guess it's harder for me to enjoy these videos as I already know the moves, but I can certainly see that somebody who doesn't know the moves could enjoy it. I mean, I know I learnt a fair few moves from Meelosapien's "Me and my shadow" video.
NathanielEverist 2 years ago
my favourite is the second one, but this is very nice, i liked the geometric trick and of course the throws, (i love any kind of throws :-P ) I hope to spin with you one of these days! :-)

another thing, tell the folks who are entering the frame to stay out of the area where you take the video, they are disturbing the flow of the video, espicially the guy at 2:42
omerlewy 2 years ago
I am currently constructing a cage for that little problem ;)
That guy at 2:11 should also be dealt with :P

another awesome vid .... i really like the shapes that you put other the video and a lovely tune as well ..... could you please spend a bit more time on each trick please

This Flower-Stall Hybrid is very much fun to play with.

You've to work more on those horizontal cateyes, spin them till your shoulder hurts hehe
leospoi 2 years ago
VERY nice vid. Some excellent ideas at work here that I'll definitely be practicing in the coming weeks. One thing I might request is at least 5 repetitions of each trick to make it easier to pin down the motions involved. Having to retrack the video to see the detail of the movements is distracting and breaks the learning process. This vid was just over 3 minutes long...you've definitely got the time.
Keep 'em coming--these are awesome! :)
TaoAvatar20 2 years ago
i'll totally agree a lot more of each move would be awesome

Make some more videos dude. Seriously.

I want to make more videos, but, unfortunately, I haven't got a videocam -/
PaPeRDoLLer 2 years ago
Another good video! You just keep churning them out man, thats awesome! I really like what you've been developing here. With some of the translation stuff with the triangle overlays, I would have done them in just Antispin. With the triangles, I would put each one on every side of s square. More interesting stuff happens.
