Actually, my recorder (a Zoom H2), has its own little "feet" (tripod) to stand on, allowing me to sit it right on the floor. The only problem with that is, is that it'll tip over if the driver makes a sudden/hard turn.
I've considered making my own tripod for my H2 with bigger feet so it can withstand hard turns.

Sounds like you dropped your recording device a few tims. If not, what were those crackling sounds and such like at about 8:36 ?

It also tends to fall if the driver makes sudden stops as well, which is what happened at around 8:36.
