"Today I accept he played a fantastic level. A very, very top level. Something very special only one player like Roger can arrive at. - Rafael Nadal after losing 6-3 6-0 in ATP WTF 2011.
Roy Jones Jr. once said when a reporter asked him about his week competition: "My opponents were not bad. It`s just that I made them look that way." Same thing about Federer.
@fbinsulation Yeah! LOL. Love the people that say Federer is 'overrated' because he didn't have to play many quality opponents. Blake had, by far the best year he's had, beat very good opponents to get to the final, and he was only able to muster 5 games, and Federer even had chances to make it even more convincing. I'd much rather watch offensive tennis like this on a faster court than watching Murray moonball and push his way to winning matches. Federer was unbeatable on hard courts.
Watching this video now really makes you appreciate how good Fed used to be. I think that when people watch him now, they forget the way he played in his prime. He dominated so much off his backhand side it was incredible.
@bholloway546 Yeah, I was thinking that exactly when I watched this just now. I had forgotten how much of a true weapon his backhand used to be...it was almost like a second forehand. Today I feel like he's still got the forehand (though it's kinda streaky now and he'll just have games upon games of unforced errors) but his backhand is so much weaker.
@totti440 Players couldn't play every Masters event if they were playing 5 set matches in finals. It started with the Nadal/Federer Rome 2006 final which went over 5 hours, and then they couldn't play the next week in the tournament they had previously entered.
Blake did not try to go to the net, that create open space for Fed. He did not try to move around to confuse him. every tennis player knows that he got to move constantly so he dont let the oponents have enough time to decide where to hit. he wait until Fed hit and react, too bad
Blake did not try to go to the net, that create open space for Fed. He did not try to move around to confuse him. every tennis player knows that he got to move constantly so he dont let the oponents have enough time to decide where to hit
He did. Basically from USO '06 until his loss to Canas in IW 2007, he was unbeatable. Went 41 consecutive matches without a loss and 7 titles, including two slams and the end of year champs.
Federer was literally invincible on hard court an grass at that time. In my opinion federer's 2006 was the highest all-year-long performance of all times.
@sasook Well, 2011 novak is a bit more effective than 2006 Federer and there is no doubt about that (although novak must still win the masters cup in order to beat 2006 roger). But in terms of skills, technique and game display 2006 Federer has no rival in my opinion.
@bbbazzinga Agreed. And despite what the numbers say, I do believe if '06 Fed went up against '11 Novak, Fed would win. If he can give Novak trouble at 30, he can definitely do it at 25.
Man.. if I was a professional tennis player and I lost to Federer this badly, instead of feeling totally embarrassed, I'd actually feel honored to have witnessed such greatness!
Looking at this match and the result, one would probably say: "Who is this Blake dude and how did he get to the final!?" Well, he was a top 5 player, had a great year, a career year, plays really good tennis to get to the final, and look what happens....Federer makes him look like your average club player!
Federer was never the best player in the world because he isn't from this world..people also say that he never won 16 GS, but his forehand did! According to this vid maybe his backhand also won a few!
i know he was amazing in this match because at the time i was completely neutral. i had no particular interest in federer or tennis and i was still thinking "O_O sweet fancy moses!" during this one
HEY GUYS STOP saying we want federer back.fed was good in past but this match was probably the best he has played,or to be precise i hv seen federer play better but never this inhumane backhands n it happns sumtimes.it doesnt mean federer played these backhands all the games in past.i beleive he is still good n has all the shots but his enforced errors hv creeped up which is why he has declined.but he can work on that n i belev like agassi he has potential to play competetive tennis till 35
Thanks for the video. Only saw highlights of this back when it happened; that is the most ice cold backhand play i've ever seen. 8:21 made me fist pump at my desk. lol.
ohhh man...this is really giving me goosebumps......this has got to be the BEST display of backhands that federer ever produced in his career.....i mean like his half volleys, are insane.......will we ever see this federer again??? i reallly miss this federer................, i dont think anyone present at the moment can play like this, and sadly i dont think we will ever see this OLD Federer again..........its such a joy to watch...
I have never seen Federer hit the backhand so well as in this match, combined with his normal forehand and serve + all court game, Blake had no chance

i swear federer needs to watch these vids from 2006 just to see if a switch in his head will be flipped and he would go back to playing the GOD tennis he played in 2006. we can only hope.
i remember watching this live at home. fed was awesome yes but honestly blake just didnt have anything to trouble federer. blakes really only got one shot and even that is erratic and hes just not quick enough to match it with federer....
if Fed could produce shots of that excellence during the AO final Murray'd have been double bageled... Blake was in his top-form and could do nothing against an all-out Swiss assault
that was one of the best matches I've ever seen, I'd put it in the same league 'brilliant performances of all times' in conjuction with Pete's vs Agassi Wimby final 1999 or Pete vs Agassi US Open Quarterfinal 2001
I honestly think, and I could be wrong, that part of the reason he hasn't been playing as well is because of the raquet. I know the k-factor had much better technology than the ncode, but I think this raquet suited his game better. If you look at really when the problems started, and I know he won aus2007 without dropping a set, and by problems I mean a shit load of unforced errors, it was when he had that double loss to Canas, the unforced errors in those matches were stupidly high
i mean honestly this is the best i have seen fed play..i mean nowadays you dont see federer hitting such backhand winners..he mostly defends on backhand...but some kids here who dont know shit bout tennis say its coz of changing d raquet..dumbass u knw it n u think federer doesnt...its coz the hard courts r a lot slow now n shanghai courts r really fast which makes it a gud choice to go far backhand winners.i mean i was watching aus open this year n the courts r so slow..feels like clay at times
@godfaathr His backhand was very solid during most of the Australian Open this year. I mean how he was hitting the backhand during the whole tournament, particularly the final, was probably the best since 2006/2007 or so.
@AllGenreMusic hey dude u dont school me when it comes to tennis...the aus open court is a lot slower compared to the one in this video...and that makes it hard to make shots like this frequently
@godfaathr I don't school you when it comes to tennis? Faster courts work in favor for Roger, because he can block back balls. If you notice, many of his winners off the backhand side was because of his ability to feed of Blake's pace and block the shots back. He clearly isn't generating tremendous racket head speed like at the Australian Open this year, and many times during the match, seeing if you have even watched the entire match, he wasn't even taking full swings off the backhand.
hey bro i do agree that his backhand here is awesome..definitely d best i hv seen him playin...but sum jackass had commented that fed has racquet problems n thats why he wasnt able to produce such backhands against murray in aus open 2010 final..but honestly i felt his backhand in aus open final was one of the best i hv seen him playin..but u didnt see shots like these coz d courts r diffrent..immediatly after this video watch d aus open final n u will knw it fr urself wat i m talkin bout
After the 2005 Wimby final, I herd him say in an interview that that was his best performence ever. Then in an interview after this match he said that he could not play better than he did in this match, and then...... the roddick semi-final in ausutralia
blake was drained going into this match, including athletic + heartstopping wins over davydenko (2-6 6-4 7-5) and nadal (6-4 7-6[0]). if he was real fresh, god he would of given federer some trouble
Just because you have two 3 setters doesn't mean you are drained. Federer had to beat Monaco, Ferrer, Moya and Nadal in Hamburg '07 ALL in three sets.
The fact that Blake lost in straight sets was simply due to Federer's superior play. I watched this match and it may have been one of Federer's best matches in his career. He also beat Blake with a bagel in Indian Wells the same year AND at the US Open the same year.
Are you going to suggest he was drained in those too?
lol i guess blake got owned there BUT STILL IN US OPEN HE TOOK A SET OFF FEDERER. but yeh overall federer kicks blake's ass easily OF COURSE DUHHH LOL!!!
I remember Fed that day, there couldve been two Blakes out there that day, he still wouldve lost, Fed was playing in another stratosphere at that time.
This Federer showed up a couple of times this year (Cincy), but only for 2setters or even only single sets. He seems to be unable to produce this tennis for a whole tournament nowadays. And YET: 4 GS-finals, won two of them and finished the year as number one. It's only normal that no one can keep up this inhuman way of playing for 6 years.
But whenever the true King Federer surfaces, he simply is unbeatable. That's just how it is...
Where is this backhand nowadays? This is insane. If he just had found this particular shape a year earlier or so and could have preserved it a little longer he would have ended up winning 25 or more slams. Would have been an eternal record for sure.
whoever that commentator is, he is the best of them all by far. J-Mac eat your heart out, as much as I love you.
'The voice of the british tennis' or whatever the called him, he would always do wimby and he was the coolest cat on the airwaves....what happened to him???
There weren't 4 other lucky guys. He only lost to nadal and Murray. 4 times to nadal (french open, Monte Carlo , Rome , Dubai)and once to Murray in cincy.
intense rally. roger with the backhand out of the run technically completely out of position for the shot almost having his back towards the court and BAM - down the line
Comment at 6:30 "...the only way I can think of is to play 100% better." I assume the words before that were "There arent many ways to beat Fed..." lolz.
@DeepHauz He did really well considering he was unconscious for a year, I mean to actually win everything whilst being uncoinscious! Quite the achievement. ;)
my fave part is this: " So what a set, what a set of tennis??!! Unbeliavable!!! " This comment just conveys perfectly what i felt after wathcing that set of tennis by Fed. Unreal
I am so sorry! Got freaked! Please dont read any further!!!! =( WHEN U R READING THIS DONT STOP OR SOMETHING BAD WILL HAPPEN! MY NAME IS SUMMER I AM 15 YEARS OLD i have BLONDE HAIR ,MANY SCARS no NOSE OR EARS.. I AM DEAD. IF U DONT COPY THIS JUST LIKE FROM THE RING, COPY N POST THIS ON 5 MORE SITES.. OR.. I WILL APPEAR ONE DARK QUIET NIGHT WHEN UR NOT ExPECTING IT BY YOUR BED WITH A KNIFE AND KILL U. THIS IS NO JOKE .
This is exactly what I was thinking, although I didn't see the full match, and these highlights may distort reality a bit.
But Federer's play here is astonishing. Normally, when watching tennis, you can kind of 'see' where the point is going. If there's space for a winner, an experienced spectator can usually spot it. With this display, Federer creates winners from impossible situations, in very unexpected spaces, which was probably Blake's main frustration: how can you fight the impossible?
The greatest match ever played by a human being, an out of this world display of tennis. Unmatched perfection.

i mean honestly this is the best i have seen fed play..i mean nowadays you dont see federer hitting such backhand winners..he mostly defends on backhand...but some kids here who dont know shit bout tennis say its coz of changing d raquet..dumbass u knw it n u think federer doesnt...its coz the hard courts r a lot slow now n shanghai courts r really fast which makes it a gud choice to go far backhand winners.i mean i was watching aus open this year n the courts r so slow..feels like clay at times
godfaathr 2 years ago
@godfaathr His backhand was very solid during most of the Australian Open this year. I mean how he was hitting the backhand during the whole tournament, particularly the final, was probably the best since 2006/2007 or so.
AllGenreMusic 1 year ago
@AllGenreMusic hey dude u dont school me when it comes to tennis...the aus open court is a lot slower compared to the one in this video...and that makes it hard to make shots like this frequently
godfaathr 1 year ago
@godfaathr I don't school you when it comes to tennis? Faster courts work in favor for Roger, because he can block back balls. If you notice, many of his winners off the backhand side was because of his ability to feed of Blake's pace and block the shots back. He clearly isn't generating tremendous racket head speed like at the Australian Open this year, and many times during the match, seeing if you have even watched the entire match, he wasn't even taking full swings off the backhand.
AllGenreMusic 1 year ago
hey bro i do agree that his backhand here is awesome..definitely d best i hv seen him playin...but sum jackass had commented that fed has racquet problems n thats why he wasnt able to produce such backhands against murray in aus open 2010 final..but honestly i felt his backhand in aus open final was one of the best i hv seen him playin..but u didnt see shots like these coz d courts r diffrent..immediatly after this video watch d aus open final n u will knw it fr urself wat i m talkin bout

After the 2005 Wimby final, I herd him say in an interview that that was his best performence ever. Then in an interview after this match he said that he could not play better than he did in this match, and then...... the roddick semi-final in ausutralia

my god federer's backhand was mental back then ! , still good now but this was insane, poor blake
ijansz 2 years ago 3
Roger's backhand was so good that match I almost though it was actually stronger than his forehand.

Roger's backhand was so good that day,Blake was not playing bad at all,but Roger was too good.
Sildiarum 2 years ago 3
blake was drained going into this match, including athletic + heartstopping wins over davydenko (2-6 6-4 7-5) and nadal (6-4 7-6[0]). if he was real fresh, god he would of given federer some trouble
BrotherTree1 2 years ago
Just because you have two 3 setters doesn't mean you are drained. Federer had to beat Monaco, Ferrer, Moya and Nadal in Hamburg '07 ALL in three sets.
The fact that Blake lost in straight sets was simply due to Federer's superior play. I watched this match and it may have been one of Federer's best matches in his career. He also beat Blake with a bagel in Indian Wells the same year AND at the US Open the same year.
Are you going to suggest he was drained in those too?
Ryan81M 2 years ago 3
Sorry, one three setter.
Ryan81M 2 years ago
lol i guess blake got owned there BUT STILL IN US OPEN HE TOOK A SET OFF FEDERER. but yeh overall federer kicks blake's ass easily OF COURSE DUHHH LOL!!!
BrotherTree1 2 years ago
I remember Fed that day, there couldve been two Blakes out there that day, he still wouldve lost, Fed was playing in another stratosphere at that time.

This Federer showed up a couple of times this year (Cincy), but only for 2setters or even only single sets. He seems to be unable to produce this tennis for a whole tournament nowadays. And YET: 4 GS-finals, won two of them and finished the year as number one. It's only normal that no one can keep up this inhuman way of playing for 6 years.
But whenever the true King Federer surfaces, he simply is unbeatable. That's just how it is...
Staunomat 2 years ago 6
Yep, I couldn't have said it any better myself. That's the truth.
niclassj 2 years ago 2
Where is this backhand nowadays? This is insane. If he just had found this particular shape a year earlier or so and could have preserved it a little longer he would have ended up winning 25 or more slams. Would have been an eternal record for sure.

whoever that commentator is, he is the best of them all by far. J-Mac eat your heart out, as much as I love you.

There weren't 4 other lucky guys. He only lost to nadal and Murray. 4 times to nadal (french open, Monte Carlo , Rome , Dubai)and once to Murray in cincy.

one of the sickest shots ever at 8:21 imo
intense rally. roger with the backhand out of the run technically completely out of position for the shot almost having his back towards the court and BAM - down the line
thats just cruel lol
erbgorre 2 years ago 3
Comment at 6:30 "...the only way I can think of is to play 100% better." I assume the words before that were "There arent many ways to beat Fed..." lolz.

All those backhands down the line are just fantastic!
And that 4:10 flick half-volley... wow. No wonder why it's included in many Federer best-ofs.

Fed was unconscious in 2006.
92-5 record overall. 27-1 in majors. 12 titles in 17 tournaments played.
probably the best year of tennis ever...for anyone.
DeepHauz 2 years ago 53
And 16 finals reached out of 17 tournaments played. That's not just unbelievable, its almost non-human lol.
And I think it will remain forever the best year for tennis. I can't see anyone EVER matching that.
Ryan81M 2 years ago 7
i know he lost french open final against nadal but who were the other 4 lucky guys who won federer that year?

@DeepHauz not to mention that he was in the final in 16 out of 17 tournaments!

@DeepHauz Fed was unconscious in 2006 only? he's probably still unconscious 6-8 hours a day

Is a "semi" half-volley a quarter-volley or sth? :)

Forget the 14 grand slams, forget the fact he's won on all 4 surfaces, it's shots like the one at 4:12 which is why he's teh greatest player ever.

the crazy thing about this match was, that blake wasn't even playing badly... but he just got destroyed anyways...
mighty08er 2 years ago 2
This is exactly what I was thinking, although I didn't see the full match, and these highlights may distort reality a bit.
But Federer's play here is astonishing. Normally, when watching tennis, you can kind of 'see' where the point is going. If there's space for a winner, an experienced spectator can usually spot it. With this display, Federer creates winners from impossible situations, in very unexpected spaces, which was probably Blake's main frustration: how can you fight the impossible?
KryzMasta 2 years ago
the level showed by federer at this tournament it's impossible to achieve by anyone in history of
tennis... match against nadal was unbelievable too.... no words.. when nadal fans talk.. this video explains it all.. fantastic
