Baby elephant calves are so vulnerable, just like human babies. I just learned from the NYTimes news wire that 200 elephants have been slaughtered by poachers in Cameroon's Bouba Ndjida National Park. The elephant calves orphaned by these killings have been spotted in the park, and activists fear the animals may soon die of hunger and thirst. These are amazing, emotionally advanced creatures and we have to stop poachers who kill to sell ivory for illegal trade in Europe and Asia.
The little tyke was throwing a fit because he was hungry. He scared his sisters, ran around for a minute, until his mother --- who was eating leaves about 20 feet to the left --- came rushing back, to stand still for about 2 minutes, for him to suckle. Indeed, when she came back to him from the bushes, she stood still immediately for him to suckle because he was bellowing a few additional loud roars, even as he reached for her teat. The motherly concern for her little demanding tyke is amazing.
@HenryDavidT I was looking at the adults and first I thought, "whoa, that bull is HUGE!" and then I realized I wasn't seeing, well, bull-bits... and then it hit me... "OMG that is the MOTHER and all those others are her kids!" O_O And the ears make her look even huger. Amazing.
Aww that's adorable!

how do they keep elephants from eating crops/fruits?
noddwyd 2 months ago
@noddwyd More to the point, how can the elephants keep silly hairless apes from growing crops all over their good grazing land?
*Wow* we're arrogant to think we own everything.

@danaseilhan I actually watched some more videos. Looks like they try to keep elephants away from crops with torches, yelling, and pitchforks.

Damn. If I were an elephant, I would be knockin' bitches all over the place.

He was just very, very hungry! The mom is so serene and understanding and knows exactly what to do, but the other females are still learning.

Interesting how they immediately form a protective circle around the baby, not knowing what's upsetting him but just in case
.
