I have a couple of cacoons on my car, I don't have the heart to knock them off. I washed around them, I hope they are born. They are still alive its been about a week. This video is just a way for us to see miracles in everyday life.
Glad you enjoyed the show - I hope your cocoons will give you a good show too! Most species like to emerge in the mid-morning through early afternoon, so those are the times to keep an eye on them if you want to actually see them emerge :-)
@jcmegabyte They are the green worms in florida that fall from the sky. As we Floridians put it. From what i understand they turn into moths. The first day I saw one on my car, I decided to save it and used a leaf to have him climb onto and transfer to a bush. HAHA. When i looked closer, I saw there were 10's of them. I did the best I could. They are in our hair, on our clothes and god knows where else.
Those sound more like "pest" moths than anything big and "cool"... Those extremely prolific types are typically fast breeders and will go through their life cycle as quickly as possible when conditions are good. However, the time from pupation to emerging could be anywhere from a couple of weeks to several years... each species has a different plan, so to really know what to expect means you'll need to identify the species and then research its life cycle. I would guess sooner than later :-)
You definitely have to wonder how they feel about being cramped into such a small package for so long, but they always seem to wait until everything is just right before they come out. Must not be in TOO big of a hurry! :-)
The wing epansion part takes about 20-30 minutes, depending on the species, and the drying/hardening of the wings anywhere from 1-2 hours. Usually the larger ones take a little longer. =)
So glad you enjoyed this one! Thanks for watching :-)
By the way, my newer vids are much better (in HD) ...you might like the "Rise of the Purple Hairstreaks", and "California Dogface Life Cycle" butterfly videos as well. Have a great weekend!
Absolutely totally gorgeous! It's so awesome the way they go from being these ugly little things to being so beautiful! That's why the butterfly is such a metaphorical creature :D There was some ancient society (I forget which) that believed that butterflies were actually human souls reincarnated, and that women could get pregnant by eating them.
Anyway lol, such a cool vid, did you breed those yourself around your house? And what video program did you use for this? Thanks, :D *5 stars*
I'd never heard that about eating the butterflies - do tell more if you happen to remember. :-)
I do all the rearing myself; but few are from my yard. (I wish it were so easy!) Most are from local mountains/canyons, and remote places out in the deep Mojave desert. It's quite the adventure just FINDING some of them! I grow some unusual host plants in my backyard, so I have specialized caterpillar food handy. I use WMM exclusively for video production. Thanks for watching/commenting! :D
Spectacular shots - The first moth shown though - What was it? Eumorpha sp? - It seems similar to the satellite, but I'm no good at Eumorphas except for the Goudy and the Pandora.

@jcmegabyte 4 have webbed themselves in on my work vehicle and are still alive. Do you know how long before they hatch from the time they settle in?

How long do butterfly wings take to dry out and be ready for flight if lets say they just emerged?
