@Johnlindsey289 I have seen a few reviews, so I don't think I'm interested. I am not against violent films at all, but I detest plain sadism posing as art.
And by the way, some of us would pick Franco over the leftists any time. I'm sick of all these films that portray communists as freedom fighters. I grew up in a communist country and I will fight them to the death if they ever again try to turn my country into their prison.
What do you think of A Serbian Film? i heard that film is the sickest film in recent memory that's also a political statement but i'm not touching that extreme sickass trash after all the truly vile and horrific things i've heard
This movie is the most disgusting pile of sadistic, twisted, and utterly pointless pile of crap ever made. It has no message. All it does is make people suffer incredibe torture. No one is spared, not even the children.Even in their fantasy they are chased by creatures from hell. And then they die.To endure this meaningless marathon of sadism you have to be insane. This is inhumanity posing as some sort of moral message. There is no message. He cynically used a fantasy world to abuse the audience.
Pan's Labyrinth is definitely a haunting, memorable film. It paints a world where beauty and cruelty coexist. However, the characters in "reality" were too black and white - the evil stepfather was completely evil, and Ophelia was childlike and innocent. The one dimesional characters make me think that the whole movie is pure fantasy, just meant to be experienced. I would love to know how the fantasy elements were connected with 1940s Franco Fascism in Spain.
The reason why what happened to Ophelia really did happen is due to the fact that, when ophelia was trapped in her room... how did she get out? the only answer is that she used the chalk to draw the door.
First off, I don't understand: everybody keeps saying "what a fairy tale should be," but I think they're missing the point of what a fairy tale actually is. Also, is a "fantastical, fantasy story with mythical creatures and monsers" not beautiful? I think a lot of us are taking things out of context. I loved this movie, but it wasn't truly a fairy-tale, and I don't understand that "fairy-tale for grown-ups" thing. Fairy tales aren't exclusive to children. They are for children AS WELL as adults.
i'm thinking of watching this movie but i really hate sad and depressing movies. so is this still something i should consider watching? since people have told me it is kinda sad.

it's a good film but I would never be able to watch it again.
it's just too emotionally difficult. it was like watching a film about the holocaust.
even the ending wasn't "happy" for me because it seemed obvious that it was all in her imagination because the movie ended in the real world and not in the mythical world
I really don't think it was in her imagination and here's why; during the scene when the captain saw Ofielia talking to the faun and couldn't see him, I've seen a sort of simailar thing in other shows.
See, in those shows that have the same situation they show children But the adults, on the other hand, are completely are completely oblivious to them.
People say this is possible because children are a lot more purehearted than adults are and I thing the same applies to Pan's Labyrinth
I'm not saying that ALL adults can't see the creatures, I'm saying that only people with childlike purities can see them. If you don't believe me, let me explain it this way.
In the series "The Winx Club" there was an episode when the girls leave Alfea to visit Earth with their Pixie friends. When they get there and start going about the city, several children and animals could see the Pixies but not the adults.
Sorry if I rambled, I hope my example helps explain things
but this particular film doesn't feel like a fantasy movie. it's way too dark and since the fantasy elements did not affect the "real world" elements in any way it's fair to assume it was all in her imagination.
if at least one more character except the girl had seen the creatures than it would have been a fantasy story.
I think, and this is only a guess, that Mercedes might had known something about the creatures because she seemed to understand all of Ofelia's questions about fauns and such
@BorgHub Actually I tought she could see it 'cause she put the eye back on the statue in the begining. you need eyes to see I don't know it made sense to me.
I watched it last night for the first time. Although I had had heard about the film I had never read or seen a review (until now!) so I didn't have many expectations. A little way through the movie I thought It would be a run of the mill fantasy, yet majority of the film was set in a horrific time where brutality was the norm (like when the peasant had his face smashed with a bottle). The true monster of the piece was the Captain... He is possibly the vilest character I have ever seen!
The things that I loved most was that I was able to make up my own mind as to whether Ofelia lives on or dies in that most tragic of situations. As we see from the Captain's view point she was talking to no one, so are to assume that she had invented this other world to escape the horrors of humanity? What do you think?
Yo princeaustin80, the whole pecimist and optimist view on life comes into play at the end , an optimist would see that she really is a princess and comes back to life when a pecimist would see her die.
Well if you dont like watching movies in other languages then thiers a fault. It's completely in Spanish so unless you either know or practice Spanish then you might not enjoy this movie so much. I liked the movie but I'm studing Spanish so it doesn't bother me so much.
yeah, but I was referring to individuals who dont like watching movies that don't speak English. Since I said Spanish that automatically means it's in subtitles. I thought that was something I didn't have to say, just already know.
This is the most beauteful and tuching movie ive ever seen. Ive seen it 100 times, but i still cant stop crying in the last scene, i just cant! The actress who plays Ofelia does an amazing job, and she is only like 12! I love this movie 10000/10
I thought this film what a masterpiece because the mythical creatures look alot more realistic and it has a beautiful moral abou sacrificing your life your immortality
2. Because obedience versus curiosity is perhaps THE central theme of the movie. It's the same reason she doesn't give up her brother and the same reason the doctor doesn't obey even when they know they "should have."
3. Didn't you see? She tried to draw on the wall, but the chalk broke because it was rocky and jagged.
This IS my favorite movie of all time. I agree 1000% except about the pronunciation of Guillermo (pronounced GEE-ER-MO) del Toro's name. I can't even put into words how good Pan's Labyrinth was, and you did a pretty good job. If you liked this movie, I recommend "The Orphanage" another breathtaking del Toro film. This is a deep, deep symbolic film that shook me to my core. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY reccomend it.
I'm pretty sure it was all real. I mean, she escaped the room with gaurds outside the doors without getting shot. The labyrinth did that whole opening thing, and she physically had a book, a key, a dagger, and chalk. Where would she get that?
I agree with you... except... Nigh I find his movies to be oribional as well. I know most people hated Lady in the water, but I just couldn't help but adore it so much. I feel that shows him tieing everything together.
After seeing the movie Pan's Labyrinth, I thought to myself was it all in her head, except the things she had, the root the chalk made it clear that it wasn't to a point. her loosing her dress and retreaving the key, and the fact that she escaped her room without a trace.
Why does everyone wonder whether Ofelia is imagining it or not? Of course she's not! She used the crayon that the Faun gave her to draw a door so that she could escape from the house, and the labyrinth opened up as Vidal was chasing her, so that she could run! Are THOSE things imaginary?!
she also used the chalk to go to a different world. my point being should could have just imagined herself using the chalk to get out, the labyrinth opening for her.
I believe it was real, but still, it doesnt give a solid answer
hmm. Okay, as far as Pan's Labyrinth goes, I was impressed, but I didn't really enjoy it. It does everything it's supposed to, but the violence was a bit too over the top for me, and I simply don't agree about the depth of Ophelia's role. I felt a bit cheated by the vagueness (though I agree it is "perfectly" vague)... I don't know
It occurs during the Spanish Civil War. The violence was real. If you see violence that is not portrayed as brutal, if it is not disturbing to you, than that depiction of violence is probably untruthful. Yes, the violence in movies like Narnia is not how it really is.
some facts when she ask the toad aren´t you ashamed you are here eating this bugs? in spanish she says little bugs, bichos=bugs, bichitos= little bugs, ha, and when the capitain kills the father and the son he says you should search properly these assholes, in spanish he doesnñt say assholes, he says (gentuza) wich is despective for poor people.
The question to me isnt if its real or not, its if she whent to here kingdom as a princess or to the after life with her parents. At the end it showed her in a kingdom and her mom and dad where there... But then it showed here corpse. I beleive she went to heaven or the after life or w/e you want to call it, with her parents there.
and some of the weirdest thing is that if you look close to the mother in the palace, she is holding a baby. that really makes you wonder. excellent movie by the way, thanks for the review.
This is not an 8.5. nor a 9.5. It is a 10+++; it rocks off the richter scale. Surely you don't mean Lord of The Rings is better?! But anyways, I recommend this movie because it is worth one's time (and money). Also, a bit of history to note: Americans went and fought in the Spanish Civil War through an organization called the Abraham Lincoln Brigades. I believe that was the name, they were also socialists. See Ken Loach's film "Of Land & Freedom" covers this topic; another great film.
Rock on! XD I just watched your review on "Shooter" and got a load of pros and cons, which i honestly didn't need since i liked the film anyway (lol). Anyway, back to this review. Seriously kicks ass! I loved Pan's Labyrinth too! Most people in my class hated it (due to the history and spanish most likely), but that just made me love it more (me being a history-lover and having lived in spain 10 years XD)... so liking the positive view (very un-reviewer-like *thumbs up*) LMAO
It is both, and the way you speak to him is both. I don't see your highy and mighty ass doing this; so until you get off your fat tush and do something productive you have no right to speak.
Everyone talks about how brutal this movie is. But if you watch it you really only see suggestions of violence. You see some people get hit and shot but these scences are tv quality. The torture scene for example all you see is the hammer swing. Because the story is told so perfectly your mind fills in the blanks, You think you saw something worse. That said, it is NOT a movie for children. Parents should be aware of that.
Not that graphic! now something like Irreversible, Last House on The Left (1972), The Untold Story, Cannibal Holocaust, House on The Edge of the Park etc. are much worse than this
Not perfectly vague as on the question.. She escaped through the doors guarded by guards with chark.. so if they've seen her, they would've shot her.. So she really escaped, thus being it real..
If you read traditional fairy tales, you will find that they are often EXTREMELY dark. Reread Red Riding Hood for one. IMO, this was a tremendous movie in that it literally took my breath away again and again. The violence was painful to watch but necessary to show the depth of the depravity of the Captain.
I really like your reviews, you are doing a great job. And to all the people that are trying to offend him, if any of you people would say something intelligent like him than everything would be good, but swearing just shows how uneducated you are.
You're full of crap. That movie isn't how every fairy tale should be...it was a good movie, sure..but people read fairytales to escape from the real world into fantasyland...not to "feel the pain" of the actors and "fall in love" with them...it was twisted in a way that made people confused about if they liked it or not afterwards..I was speechless for at least 15 minutes after seeing that...but the way you describe it is completely different than how I felt about it...
Yeah I just love reading Little RedRiding hood and having my grandma eaten up by a wolf then have a ranger come tear him to pieces and then have supper with my half digested grandma.
No. INTELLEGENT people DO watch these movies to fall in love with the characters and feel the pain. INTELLEGENT people ENJOYED this movie becuse it is dark and beautiful. It's not his fault if you're shallow and stupid.
god your a fag. Pans labyrinth was a fucking war movie!!!! It was brutal, like an ann franke goes to hell documentary. the girl was a great actress, but, the movie was unnecessarily brutal. the torture scenes are all i'm thinking about... remember when he beat the guy to death with the wine bottle you fag?
But without those scenes, it would take away from how cruel the stepfather really was. Okay, so they were gory, but you should have realized what you were doing when you were going into a 14 A movie. I really like Pan's Labyrinth..
Well, I can't say I fell in love with ofelia, but I did hate the captain SO MUCH. I was so happy he was stabbed and laugthed so hard when his mouth was ripped open. I really needed that or else I would've exploded.
@Johnlindsey289 I have seen a few reviews, so I don't think I'm interested. I am not against violent films at all, but I detest plain sadism posing as art.

The girl is a bad character. When she's on her second "trial" she just eats a grape for no reason, and even shoos away the faeries trying to stop her.
And the captain the epitome of evil? He might be sinful, he might be evil, but epitome? are you serious.
He harms 2 sorts of people in this film.
1. People who he's at war with
2. Someone who was caught with a spy, drugged his drink, and stole his son

I thought you were very generous to this movie. I've seen it 3 times, it good but highly overrated.
1. The characters have little depth. They always show the same emotions, always sad, angry or depressed. Theres no humour. Ofelia was 1 dimentional.
2. The scene where she eats the grape is POORLY executed! why would she pick 1 without a care in the world when she knew she shouldn't?!
3. The chase scene..why she did she stand on the chair? she could have drawn it on the wall.

I'm pretty sure it was all real. I mean, she escaped the room with gaurds outside the doors without getting shot. The labyrinth did that whole opening thing, and she physically had a book, a key, a dagger, and chalk. Where would she get that?

Did he just say "gwel-li-mo"? Someone needs work on his Spanish.

I agree with you... except... Nigh I find his movies to be oribional as well. I know most people hated Lady in the water, but I just couldn't help but adore it so much. I feel that shows him tieing everything together.
After seeing the movie Pan's Labyrinth, I thought to myself was it all in her head, except the things she had, the root the chalk made it clear that it wasn't to a point. her loosing her dress and retreaving the key, and the fact that she escaped her room without a trace.
itsallaboutmeow 3 years ago
The movie seemed pretty obviously about the power of the mind to cope with stressful situations.
ReignOfUtopia 3 years ago
Hmmm....if you think that
"the very best part of pan's labyrinth is the question whether the fairy tale elements are real"
then you probably haven't understood much of the film. The movie is really really beyond that

Markunator 4 years ago 3
she also used the chalk to go to a different world. my point being should could have just imagined herself using the chalk to get out, the labyrinth opening for her.
I believe it was real, but still, it doesnt give a solid answer

I like watching your reviews and say you do a pretty good job with the reviews.
But, nobody is going to take you seriously if you keep butchering the pronuciation of directors' names (M. Night Shyamalan and Guillermo del Toro).
Budobuyu 4 years ago
I don't know
licketysplit101 4 years ago
It occurs during the Spanish Civil War. The violence was real. If you see violence that is not portrayed as brutal, if it is not disturbing to you, than that depiction of violence is probably untruthful. Yes, the violence in movies like Narnia is not how it really is.

Pan's Labyrinth is one of the best movies I have seen in a while!
ScoArc 4 years ago
This is not an 8.5. nor a 9.5. It is a 10+++; it rocks off the richter scale. Surely you don't mean Lord of The Rings is better?! But anyways, I recommend this movie because it is worth one's time (and money). Also, a bit of history to note: Americans went and fought in the Spanish Civil War through an organization called the Abraham Lincoln Brigades. I believe that was the name, they were also socialists. See Ken Loach's film "Of Land & Freedom" covers this topic; another great film.

The Spanish Civil War was interesting. I suggest everyone learn about it.
fscher 4 years ago
no offence to those who think this was all just her imagination..
-people don't imagine their way through stone walls by drawing doors on them with chalk
-the thing about the mandrake root and the mother getting well and then getting sick and dying as soon as she throws it in the fire..
if they wanted to push that angle they should have made more reasonable doubt to the fairies than just -the bad guy can't see them
-it fades back to her corpse after she's gone over-
beautiful movie

Rock on! XD I just watched your review on "Shooter" and got a load of pros and cons, which i honestly didn't need since i liked the film anyway (lol). Anyway, back to this review. Seriously kicks ass! I loved Pan's Labyrinth too! Most people in my class hated it (due to the history and spanish most likely), but that just made me love it more (me being a history-lover and having lived in spain 10 years XD)... so liking the positive view (very un-reviewer-like *thumbs up*) LMAO

stop being persnickity and bitchy. He made a mistake.
beautifulpassion 4 years ago
That's not persnickety, nor is it bitchy. If you're going to do a review of a movie, the least you could do would be to have correct pronunciations.
tnware 4 years ago

So she really escaped, thus being it real..
mildvuurtje 4 years ago
If you read traditional fairy tales, you will find that they are often EXTREMELY dark. Reread Red Riding Hood for one. IMO, this was a tremendous movie in that it literally took my breath away again and again. The violence was painful to watch but necessary to show the depth of the depravity of the Captain.

I really like your reviews, you are doing a great job. And to all the people that are trying to offend him, if any of you people would say something intelligent like him than everything would be good, but swearing just shows how uneducated you are.
Wormboy74 5 years ago
You're full of crap. That movie isn't how every fairy tale should be...it was a good movie, sure..but people read fairytales to escape from the real world into fantasyland...not to "feel the pain" of the actors and "fall in love" with them...it was twisted in a way that made people confused about if they liked it or not afterwards..I was speechless for at least 15 minutes after seeing that...but the way you describe it is completely different than how I felt about it...
AutumnHasACamera 5 years ago
You should probably try seeing it again. Maybe with more of an open mind?

what in the world does that have to do with Pan's Labyrinth?
TubeGirl99 4 years ago
No. INTELLEGENT people DO watch these movies to fall in love with the characters and feel the pain. INTELLEGENT people ENJOYED this movie becuse it is dark and beautiful. It's not his fault if you're shallow and stupid.
beautifulpassion 4 years ago 3
god your a fag. Pans labyrinth was a fucking war movie!!!! It was brutal, like an ann franke goes to hell documentary. the girl was a great actress, but, the movie was unnecessarily brutal. the torture scenes are all i'm thinking about... remember when he beat the guy to death with the wine bottle you fag?
euphan123 5 years ago
But without those scenes, it would take away from how cruel the stepfather really was. Okay, so they were gory, but you should have realized what you were doing when you were going into a 14 A movie. I really like Pan's Labyrinth..
