1. Cacti can only be placed on sand or cactus and no block can be adjacent horizontally. If it grows into an invalid position it will pop off, which is the principle most cactus farms use.

2. Signs have no collision mask - this means you can walk right through them. Except for that, it counts as a full block, meaning water and lava is blocked by it and mobs think it's a block they can walk on safely. These principles are used widely in mob traps and other creations. Have fun!
