You know, every single line of his solos is itself a melodic masterpiece. He isn't simply playing patterns, he is giving voice to what he hears in his mind. A true genius.
JUStr34, I read about it in more than one bio of Bird, it was also in the film "Bird". The sax player really did throw his sax into the river after hearing Bird play. I feel the same way after hearing Art Tatum, except I can't throw my piano into the river becauase it's too heavy.
Can´t understand in all my life how is posible to play that way...this man makes me ill...it´s not human, just two bars of his music are imposible; if I could play half minute of his playin´, I would be a master...all over those changes, playin´ so natural...makes me ill
You all know that they are "lip-syncing" this to the recording right? If you don't notice his breathing, or the fact that the kit doesn't even have a ride symbol . . . He still played it on the recording though, and wow, what a musician's musician

BIRD's genuis is often heard today. TO make the abstract out from left field solo so appealing took a mind & soul that exists in some multi- dimensional place.(can't logically explain it) JAZZ leads the listener in a non-predictable question and answer session regardless deep or shallow in their sub- conscious. Charlie kept you guessing ....sounds like two people are playing when I see and Know its just one man. Whew!!!
Note the contrast between these gentlemen - well-dressed, disciplined, musically and intellectually articulate - and the ignorant, foul-mouthed, violence-prone low-IQ "rappers" who feign to represent contemporary black American music today. Have we gone backwards or what?
@hinodecho69 Jazz musicians also weren't impacted by Reagan, crack, and AIDS the way our black youths have. Many of those "ignorant, foul-mouthed, violence prone, low-IQ 'rappers,'" especially in the 90s, were outstanding linguistic talents with immense play in their lyrics. There have always been hacks -- and rap is no different -- but many of today's rappers exhibit their own brand of genius. You just don't hear about them because it's not what the mainstream wants to be fed.
there s some paradox when we find perfection in a musical performation. What makes art perfect - is it perfect for all etc blah blah BUT THIS SHOOTS ME INTO HEAVEN and holds me right in the present moment. I'm totally aware of my own being when i listen to this number.
@comateensnyc It's Buddy Rich, but you can see that he was off when mimicing the actual recording, you can tell he plays quarter notes on the intro when there's a roll and at the end of his solo, he gets on the high hat too early.
Too bad he got so bad into heroin. He blew off shows, showed up to sessions too strung out to play, and just ended up hurting anyone who tried to help him.
But goddammit, could he bop like a madman. What a great sax player.
Comments about drug use are really non starters, however, in this case, the totally unsubstantiated comment is so far from the truth, it's ludicrous. We all know about Bird, but the others didn't use heroin, and it's a horrible thing to say about anyone when it's not even close to the truth.
@mcgovnor1 alot of them were drug users of heroin , i know its a horrible thing to say but the most talented musicians and its always the most talented get hooked on drugs and then it ruins them , take whitney houston best singer ever lived , charlie parker heroin , the rev from avenged sevenfold died from drugs brilliant drummer , i just hate seeing all these amazing characters wasting their amazing talent on drugs

dannyinternetz, that's the way these films were done. The group would record the song off camera, then mime the tune on film afterward..that;s why it looks fake and out of synch. Incidentally as great as Buddy Rich was, he is the wrong drummer for bird..Max Roach is better suited.
I believe Bird wanted Max Roach, but Bird's manager, Norman Granz, insisted on Buddy Rich, who of course later became the incredible percussionist he was. No drummer could collaborate with Parker like Roach, though.
@dannyinternetz they were dubbed because it was for a movie and they had already recorded the actual piece. its pretty funny whatching how bad the drummer is at pretending to play

@nicodagger You do know that he wasn't even close to what he was in this video? That happened because he played the one of the only tunes he knew over a completely different tune on the bandstand. Sure laughing off the stage is pretty harsh, but he couldn't play at all back then, and that's just how things would go down if you went to a jam like that and couldn't play. But talking like that is just stupid of you.
@arakami yes of course i know all about it, i was just relishing the revenge Bird had on the ones who mocked him, even if he did deserve it. So it's not stupid of me, but stupid of you to assume people don't know the same facts you know. You completely missed the point I was trying to make.
