Gosh, watching this scene as a young adult now makes me cry so hard. I'm dating a fairly wounded man, and while I love him, its difficult to know when he's truly hurting or if its me. Such a good chemistry between Matt Damon and Minnie Driver in this film, so complicated and yet so right.
they end up together in the end don't they? at least that's what we are led to believe, I definitely think so. In my opinion she may have lost the battle in this scene but every time a lover plays strategy against the one they love instead of just...simple...loving...honestly..however their instinct leads them....They may end up together that night or for a while..but it makes for a foundation of ...game playing...instead of relating for the sake of
relating..And THOSE are the people who end up losing the person forever...wether it's after a 2 week fling or a few wonderful years. Sometimes you lose the short term for a sake of a forever . The important thing is though..that she wasn't even thinking of short term OR long term or how she could..finagle her way into his heart or into him accepting her..She just spoke from her heart because it was more about her wanting him to KNOW how she felt about him than just getting him into bed that
There's no doubt that the acting was excellent in this movie. The Chemistry between Will and Skylar is obvious. In this particular scene, Skylar should have used the approach Sean did. After Skylar professed her love for Will, she should have waited for his response. By her saying "Will?", she spoke first and allowed Will an out. He who speaks first loses. When she said "I love you", there was pressure on Will to say what he felt. She let him off the hook.
@TAZ27591 I don't really think that she really let him off the hook. I think that Will would have just tip-toed around the situation anyways and avoided the whole thing altogether. Like Robin William's character said in the film, Will always has a bullshit answer for anyone.
You're right, Will's character always had a bullshit answer, but when the questions were hard hitting, he faltered. This is true in life as well. However, after asking a tough question, make the person answer before you speak again. It's sales 101. :-)
@TAZ27591 I would have never think about that. Good point. If i watched movie once more i maybe would, but damn i enjoyed it so much watching it first time.
0:17, 0:34... watching how choked up she gets as she goes out on a limb like that is one of the most powerful things depicted between these two characters. It must have helped that she was actually in love with him. To pack that much emotion into a simple "gulp" is a damn strong gesture .
If you find a girl like that IRL, you either don't let her go or you accept that you would be lucky to find a woman worthy of that much respect. A woman who's secure enough with herself to navigate such...
...powerful emotion internally - despite the conflict it presents, and push forward, individually, with the one she loves - that's a strong thing. It's what makes Minnie Driver's character so attractive.
"I" BELONG TO MARISA JILL CHERRY, "I" ALWAYS HAVE SINCE "TIME" BEGAN, "NOW", AND IN WHATEVER "THE FUTURE" IS, EVERYTHING "I" HAVE DONE IN "LIFE", DO, OR WILL DO, "I" HAVE OR ATTAIN IS FOR YOU, REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS "LIFE" (Note: I loved my body prior to the accident on July 31, 2005, I was and still am vain :)) - "I" AM GLAD "GOD" REVEALED THIS TO ME AND "I" AT THE LEAST GOT TO BE WITH YOU FOR 3 DAYS, TOUCHED YOUR KNEE, AND PRAYED FOR YOU
is always was one of the best scenes ever in this movie. love it. Love Minnie and Matt in it. they're acting great and choosing the Smith song Angeles was one of the best choices the edit-unit staff could have made.
I would love to see Keira Knightley play Skylar. She would be peeeerfect. But back in 1997, Keira was only 11 or 12 years old. But this woman was good too.
He's not an idiot, he has the right idea. She'll find something about him she doesn't like and her attraction will be gone. It happens in every relationship. Nothing's good enough for women.
no dude. he says that stuff in the scene with his shirt off only because he has a fear of commitment, because all his relationships with people that should have loved him ended horribly. The part has nothing to do with what women want but what Will has to get over; that you can't know everything about life by drawing conclusions based on some analyzing and quick decisions. It wasn't that Will even thought those things truly, he just had his own fear like I said. This is my favorite movie dude.
Will doesn't have fear of commitment, he has insecure attachment disorder. Commitment fears typically root in pursuits of a greater ambition not being available and being stuck with the same person. Will knows that his devotion isn't going to be a problem, but he also knows how women always talk about their exes negatively. "Talk about how you went slumming too once" Will also knows that women end relationships 80% of the time, the remaining 20% are guys like him who are aware of biology factors
Just because it is your favorite movie doesn't mean that your interpretation somehow holds more credit than mine. You think I don't like this movie? I wouldn't be writing here if I didn't :P
im just saying that it being my favorite movie, i have put a lot of thought into it. whatever Will has, he just thinks that he's going to lose her like he lost everything else, so he's afraid; that's the only reason he says all those things. He wants to end it himself before she can have the chance to hurt him. Think of old yeller;the kid loves the dog but he yells at it to leave.
You're interpretation of this movie is correct, Tannerislegend. I agree with it completely. PoopShitMario has no clue what he's talking about.
This is ALL about Will and his fear of losing Skylar. It has nothing to do with Skylar...Skylar has no intention of losing Will, but Will has that fear, because, like you said, everyone who SHOULD have loved Will in the past has ditched him or abused him.
PoopShitMario's interpretation makes no sense to me...I think Mario has been hurt by a woman.
Look it up, women file 70-80% of divorces. Women reject men more than men reject women, and end more relationships too. These are very consistent findings, with the biological root of women being more picky, because they have less eggs than men have sperm. Women's attraction doesn't appear as easily, and also disappears easier than men's. A lot of higher end IQ guys like Will boycott relationships because of that EXACT reason, that is why my interpretation makes sense.
Oh, my mistake. You're saying WILL left because of that. So, in the end, when he drives to LA to find her, are you saying that Will is doing the wrong thing? In your context, that's how the movie ends...by going after a girl who's going to dump him, according to you, right?
In that context, how the heck does the end of the movie make any sense at all? Will gave up a job and his hometown to follow a girl that's going to dump him? Maybe you could explain how that makes sense to you.
Hollywood ending. Realistic story, realistic personalities and situations that represent what happens in real life, and an ending that pleases people. Everyone always (few exceptions) gets married or laid in movies at the end, haven't you noticed? Sex sells, romance sells, hope sells. Doesn't change the divorce statistics, and gender biases, but it sells.
Yeah, Mario, but I think that most people will disagree with your interpretation of why Will leaves Skylar. And, even if he was in the right, why did he throw a temper tantrum like a 3 year old and walk out in the middle of the night? Do you think that's the best way to end a relationship? That has to say something about Will and his deep, underlying problems.
And if it was a Hollywood ending, why was it left open ended? We have no idea what happens when Will gets to LA.
Because he's insecure. People who yell to prove their point that they're right are typically insecure. Insecurity is THE BIGGEST turn off to women. You do the math of how he felt. "I'm being insecure right now, therefore her saying she won't find something about me she doesn't like is bullshit, because insecurity is a UNIVERSAL turn-off". No one is perfectly secure, but the reason why women end relationships more than men is because it's not a turn-off for men like it is for women.
I bailed on a vacation with friends and drove 300 miles to get back my ex back. People do crazy shit and sometimes a guy needs to step back to see what he had.
You've obviously never taken an evolutionary biology class in your life. How about you say "that is the most retarded statement I have ever read" to the biological sciences department of UC berkeley?
Cute. Bringing up research without citing it, AND talking about a school you most like likely can' t get into. I can debunk your entire idea with one word. Whores. They sure are are picky.
"Most like likely" lmao. Whores require money. That's not acceptance, nor do they offer men any real intimacy. Hell, the whole "profession" of a hooker arises from the biological fact that women are more picky. They're making money from the imbalance of supply and demand. Women are willing to supply less sex because they're more choosy, and they're making money from men's consistent and unwavering demand of it.
Needless to say, your linguistic capacity reflects the depth of your responses. I love how you are subjecting me to a double standard, whilst not having presented any cited sources yourself. What I am discussing about human sexuality is just plain knowledge that you would possess had you taken Human Evolutionary Biology yourself. You know, come back when your debating technique is a little more sophisticated than "im right ur wrong lolz".
UCB is too expensive, just like whores. I work as a math tutor, so I don't show off and buy things I can't afford. By the way, UCB posts their lectures online, you should check them out. As much as I hate the burden of proof being rested on me by someone who is not in the least bit respectable, google "why men rape" and examine the first result. The studies presented should help you foster a new understanding of the construct of human sexuality.
Well, in your case that might not even happen, because you seem like a bitter person who chews out someone's ideas and ridicules them, trying to rip their life apart. Sure sounds like what Will did to Sean in GoodWillHunting. Just because you're a woman and have an advantage in dating doesn't mean it's equal. This is the "just world phenomenon" in psychology; people who are in a position of power believe things are equal and the world is fair.
Hmm...that will teach me to compliment people who are senselessly angry. Maybe someday if you learn to be nicer you'll be able to afford UCB. What goes around comes around.
i go to berkeley and i have actually told them this on more than one occasion. this is why tim white is no longer in anthropology; they were too critical of his ideas. these ideas are biological reductionism that completely ignore human culture. i do not like it when humans are reduced to pure biology, nor do i not believe in "universal truths." you must be scandalized that i say "believe"! But its SCIENCE!!! Learn to recognize where the empirical science ends and the assumptions begin.
I can correctly predict who is going to end the relationship 95% of the time. I predict the guy to end it if it's a guy who ends it as a pre-emptive measure to the girl ending it. Otherwise I'd predict the girl. Certain demographic of guys beats girls to the trigger, but I don't feel like going. Only dumb people call biological reductionism dumb, b/c they can't create a competent bio.red. analysis on their own b/c their brain isn't capable of analyzing a large enough number of factors at once.
This is such garbage. Maybe if you spent less time listening to podcasts and more time interacting with professors and grad students you would have never let this ridiculous statement escape your mouth because they would have shut you down as soon as you said you could "predict" a complex human action 95% of the time. Do you even have a degree in the topics you are discussing? Either way, it must be nice to live in such a clean, simple, and boxy little world.
@earthfell And maybe you should understand statistics better. Predicting complex human action does not mean one has to understand the concepts, as long as you have data to back up the statistics. For example, I can predict that 50% of the time, if you are born a poor class you will stay in a poor class, and that there is a 99% chance that those born in a family of lowest 20% income will not be in the top 5% income. These are just statistics found from data. No understand is necessary.
