@keahende From an earlier response - "The "rings" were in the video I used for this section. No explanation was given for them. My interpretation was that each "ring" represented a relative "system" - from planetary system to solar system to galactic region to galaxy to local cluster .... etc. I suppose it is open to however you want to interpret it." Thanks for your question.
Actually, What's mis-labeled as part 1 of 7 of Mike Oldfield's Distant Earth is indeed the work of Micheal Stearns. Chronos is the name of both the soundtrack and the visuals that are seen. It was originally produced for IMAX presentation. We're fortunate because its on both VHS and DVD.
I don't understand the comment of "Dropzink" - this video (music and images) is ethereal and inspirational. Well done. Curiously, Dropzink criticises insufficient use of synthesizers. Odd - given that the music is synthesized - but further, on what basis does Dropzink think synthesizers are somehow more appropriate to space? Is Dropzink a space traveler commenting from experience - or just someone who didn't think before criticising?
Cheers, Tark! This music is amongst my favorite in my collection. I bought the soundtrack to Chronos(on LP no less!) the day after I saw the film in Balboa Park, San Diego back in 1985. Great visuals but I felt that it was the music that made the difference. Brilliant stuff! BTW, I still have this LP stowed away till I buy a new record player.
Please lets give the credit to the master creator of this music. His name is Michael Stearns who composes mainly for IMAX and special genera of film like movie BARAKA. I had a privilege to communicate with him for a short while as a composer my self. Cheers
Thank you for this posting. I don't think I could give him more credit. The only credit I personally should receive is for the video editing of the film. I love this and other music by him. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a way to communicate directly with him, or I would have. Thanks.

Also I think the rings are 最基本之定律 the most fundamental law in universe, from the newest theory of "cycled big band " to vibration of micro particles, from geometry measure to life cycles.
if you like this, and want more of this sort of space music, go to the deepspacehome(dot)com website. full album streaming. it's all very deep space and ambient. you can put it on and just zone out completely.
The circles represent the powers of 10. Each circle is 10 times larger as the previous one, to give an idea of the massiveness of the universe.

It's not Michael Sterns. It's Mike Oldfield, of Tubular Bells fame.
TalkinXbox 1 year ago
@TalkinXbox Nope, Michael Sterns it is... However, we are a little bit late, this discussion, of who the composer is, was settled a long time ago ;)

@TalkinXbox One more thing. I have been through Mikes discography. This masterpiece is not there!

Oh! Cosmic Journey. I loved the film. There wasn't much I learned from it, but it helped give a sense of perspective.
Excellent music.

Sorry but, in my opinion this song doesn't fits with space, only with the Earth. I think it needs more use of synthesizers.

The rings Represents a distance of one meter to the power of 10, I think. dont take it for sure. I remeber this clip from a documentary.

with the ring you can better understand the relative distance in this magnificent universe and feel the dimensions.
