I keep looking to the left to see any action surrounding the track marshall who died - none for ages? Should Krosnoff have been racing in the big leagues? Like Ratzenberger in F- was driving beyond his true abilities?
@MissEgasMoniz its terrible, it took me about 3 times to see the marshall who got hit. i dont think any paramedics realized a marshall was struck for at least 5 minutes. but sadly and horribly, it looks like no ammount of medical attention would have helped either of the 2. but this accident wasnt krosnoffs fault, a drafting car pulled out and cut him off. also ratzenberger died because the car wasnt as fast as he was pushing it. both drivers deserved to be in the pros.
Rare is right. I've been looking for this clip ( I never realized until I typed it how morbid of a pursuit that sounds like) since I saw it live in 1996. Thanks for the post.
@hayd112233 No they Weren't , a track marshall named Gary Avrin died at the scene. You can see krosnoff's front right tire hit the head of Avrin when it got airborne. Both driver and marshall died instantly. If you can't see it, go see the same video with better quality
Reading Steve Olvey's book, he stated that he knew Jeff was dead as soon as he saw him, but he wasn't going to declare a driver dead at the track (after Gordon Smiley in 1982). At the time there was a dispute about ambulances, the driver (for whatever reason) wasn't about to admit he wasn't licensed for public roads, so the ambulance did a lap of the track. After this race all that changed with the VP of Molson getting involved.
Poor Adrian Fernandez had the unhappy duty of winning the races that Jeff Krosnoff and Greg Moore perished in. I think he also had an accident at Michigan in '98 that led to the death of a spectator, but I can't be totally sure about that.
I was at this race when Krosnoff died, in the grandstand, on the other half of the race track, so we only saw on the screen. But as soon as I saw it I just to (reasonably) fear her was deceased. There was just nothing left of his auto. I told the others we should leave, and we did. RIP, Jeff. And now RIP Dan Wheldon. Clearly Johansson's fault. No shoulder check, after slowing. You just can't slow, and then move left or right, not without being absolutely certain there's no one behind you.
@Rollingrock991 Wheldon's crash I think was just unfortunate and tragic and I think could've been avoided had the Indy Car Officials just not raced with that many cars at that track. Seriously? How dumb can the officials be to let that many cars race at a track the cars go well over 225 mph and close together and nothing to happen? RIP Dan Wheldon.
@Rollingrock991 In my opinion, I really love the racing and competition that the indy cars bring, but I think I speak for everyone when I say I've seen way too many deaths and injuries with these vehicles and they need to either keep the cars from going airborne once and for all, or just plain pull the plug on the series because I'd rather the drivers be alive and competing in a different series rather than dead. Especially the way Krosnoff and Wheldon both died.
@basicthuganomics "Who's Gary?" Gary Arvin was a track marshall working the event. It's hard to tell in the video, but he was struck and killed by the right front wheel of Krosnoff's car after it detached.
RIP Jeff Krosnoff and the steward, who also died by Jeff's car... By the way, I've always wondered where his legs were after the crash? (No bad feelings)
@Spuddy0108 if i remember right, they just called it and gave fernandez the win after this. awful wreck, only gordon smileys was worse. but yes, the marshalls should be flying the red flag with all that debris, regardless on injuries
@TheAntihero6212 No 1996 is the year..Jeff Krosnoff died when hitting the light post and a track worker where killed after being struck by Jeff Krosnoff's right wheel.
@erasetoimprove It does not take skill to race on the edge - once on the edge it's nothing but a technology game. THAT is what makes racing worthless. Getting the technology out and making the racing about lead changes and drivers forcing the issue by their own physical effort is what makes racing compelling.
@PYLrulz1984 Wrong question. The right question is why they do not restrict the power so these cars are less likely to fly into that fencing. The speeds they were running then - and run now - are POINTLESS.
@STP43FAN1 because then they'd be restricted to run below 130MPH and that would be boring. Racing is meant to be fast... and it is dangerous but that's the nature of it and everyone involved knows what they are getting into.
@erasetoimprove Slower speeds make racing boring? That makes NO sense. They need speeds - trap speeds or overall lap speeds - over 170 MPH at most tracks to have good racing? That is flat wrong. Racing is about lead changes, not speed. The sport misses NOTHING if speeds get restricted - it misses nothing with speeds under 190 on superspeedways or anywhere else.
@STP43FAN1 the drivers are there for the speed, they could care less if they're passing cars if it's only at 130MPH. You get those speeds at local half mile dirt tracks. I like everything about racing and speed is one of those things I like. 95% of the issues that caused this crash to be fatal to both driver and track workers have been addressed anyway. No telephone poles exposed and no track workers in front of fencing. Had it not been for those two factors, this wreck might not have been fatal
@STP43FAN1 the slower you go, the less skill it takes to drive. Racing isn't ALL about passing and lead changes, except to the casual fans who only care about pack racing and have no care for the skill involved. No race car drivers race because they're thinking "wow I can't wait to pack race!" They race because they can't wait to go fast and manhandle a car at as high of speeds as the car will handle. Anyway in 1996, as you can see, some precautions were not taken to prevent this tragedy.
@erasetoimprove Again, nonsense squared. It never gets easier to drive when the cars become slower; on the contrary it becomes far harder to RACE. The "skill" involved in racing where the game is technology and not lead changes is a nonexistent skill. Racers don't feel accomplishment when they outrun someone; when they pack race they know they just outfought the field - THAT is real accomplishment. Precautions for this Toronto disaster? They should have restricted the cars, period.
@erasetoimprove No, thinking racing is about anything EXCEPT passing is completely in denial of the truth. Don't try to sell shifting, strategy, etc. because they get in the way of real racing - passing, repassing, lead changes, combat.
@STP43FAN1 I wasn't saying that anyway.... but you need them ALL for it to be good racing. Don't try to just sell passing, re-passing, and lead changes either... because if that was the only thing required to race, then racing would truly be just a game... like any other game. When, in fact, racing is a way of life... people don't race to entertain. They race because of everything that driving a car at high rates of speed in competition involves which is much more than passing and lead changes
@erasetoimprove STOP IT. Lead changes mean it's NOT a game - it's NEVER a game when you have to fight hard to lead. People race to PASS PEOPLE, not because of raw speed.
@STP43FAN1 anyway NASCAR, a form of racing I have watched all my life, uses the restrictor plate at its two fastest tracks. But in a survey NASCAR distributed in late 2009... 78% of the drivers said they rather have the plates taken off because they want to go fast, REALLY fast... and if that's dangerous, so be it. That's what they're there for.
@erasetoimprove That is nonsense squared. Taking the plates off makes it a suicide game, and they'd just gone through a decade-plus of fatalities on UN-restricted tracks. Drivers are not supposed to want to go TOO fast.
