  • This song makes me cry everytime, he's got such a perfect way of vocalising simple sadness. Or something less pretentious, such as: I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THIS WAS ALAN RICKMANS FAVOURITE SONG THAT MAKES IT EVEN BETTER TO ME! No seriously.

  • "its a long time since i drank champagne" were apparently chekhovs last words

  • Great that Alan Rickman likes this song, but I'm proud to be of the 10% who are here because Tom Waits is the voice that narrates our daily thoughts.

  • watch the past dissapear on the horizon, reach and gone. keep the memories and leave

  • This is MY favorite song. Everyone stop following me!

  • His voice so low. Ohnoes

  • This song... is either very sweet, or very creepy... or both. Agreed tho... brilliant!

  • deeppppp

  • no Letter10music

    you are a good man.

  • "In a land there's a town, And in that town there's a house,

And in that house there's a woman. And in that woman there's a heart I love

I'm gonna take it with me when I go"

Am I less of a man because this song nearly brings me to tears?

  • @Letter10music The fact that you are feeling anything makes you a man

  • @Letter10music It has the same effect on me. You're more of a man for admitting it.

  • Second favorite song from this amazing album, Hold On is beyond everything else, but this comes close in beauty...

  • Whos Alan Rickman?

  • Who the fuck is Alan Rickman? This is mutha fuckin Tom Waits!

  • To make it sound as lush as this on guitar the first thing you do is tune it to open D then learn to play open D then learn the song in open D..Use A chorus if you are really adventuresome..Life just sounds better in Open D....Gettin it now????

  • My god..this is so awesome. Thank you Tom!

  • Alan Rickman is one of those actors u do or dont know he was Hans the villian in Die Hard the angel in Dogma and he's in Harry Potter

  • okay.. I dind'nt knew it was Alan Rickmans favourite song. great acotor. great taste in music.

  • welcome jamenhvadnu!

  • I'm here because this is my favourite song.

  • @jamenhvadnu Alan?

  • how the crap can I play this on the guitar and still make it magical? It's impossible!!

  • I like Alan Rickman, but to bogart this youtube video's comment section acting like he holds a candle to Tom Waits is just annoying.

  • @LadydogJack No, a bunch of mindless sheep who can't find great music on their own think that, but in reality the majority of people here just know good music.

  • who do fuck is Alan Rickman?

  • @mandos41 Severus Snape from Harry Potter

  • I'm guessing this is where Joe Hisaishi drew inspiration from when he composed the music for Spirited Away. Lots of similarities, love 'em both.

  • Hehehe, yep its idle curiosity that i'm listening to this........... maybe Alan should sing it? He has the voice ......

  • I'm not here because this is the favourite song of Alan Rickman. i'm here because this is my favorite song...

  • I didn't even know it was Alan Rickman's fave song-I think I loved it before him-it magnificent in every way.

  • This one stuck right out when I got the disc upon its release. Still a gem.

  • i discovered this song through alan rickman (its his favourite song) .. so there is a girl i love.. and i love her truly but the only thing that stands between us i her boyfriend.. they both love each other but i cannot help it.. i just love her.. we were good friends.. but when i told her i love her.. somedays later she stopped talking to me.. i tried to talk to her but, she didnt listen, now, i know someday she is going to be mine, someday.. but this song.. inspires me so much that i just cry

  • The melancholia of this song is as close to perfection as it could be

  • I have a true, true love... and... thanks, Tom, thank you. I decided...

I'm gonna take it with me when I go.

    Bless Tom Waits

  • All broken down by the side of the road

I've never felt more alive or alone

    ....genius.

  • 2 dislikes? Wow. How you can dislike this is beyond me.

  • Who's Alan Rickman?

  • @kelleykapowski you're kidding right?

  • @leahh617 nope, i'm only here for tom waits. call me old-fashioned.

  • @kelleykapowski He's the most brilliant actor to ever walk the earth. A few of his more popular roles include Hans Gruber from Die Hard, Colonel Brandon from Sense and Sensibility, Sheriff of Nottingham in Kevin Costner's Robin Hood, and of course Professor Snape in Harry Potter. And I can see why this is his favorite love song it's beautiful :)

  • @leahh617 Again. Here just for Tom Waits. Thanks for the recommendation, though.

  • @leahh617 it's bloody beautiful...

  • Thumbs up if you're here because the City Streets had a quotation from this song in their album sleeve!!

  • Tom Waits is an astounding artist.

  • This is a masterpiece. Poetry.

  • 90% of peoples are here because this is the favourite song of Alan Rickman. Brilliant...

  • @LadydogJack NO

  • @LadydogJack :O I didn't even know that! BONUS POINTS.

  • Alan Rickman's favourite love song :3

  • Thumbs up if you're here because of Alan Rickman!

  • My favourite love song.

  • I read somewhere that Waits actually intended this as a very optimistic song, in the sense that it reverses the old saying that 'you can't take it with you' - because, the song seems to say, all the love you gave and got will remain with you forever. However optimistic, though, this one's got me sniffling away like some little ol'e lady every time :-)

  • I feel much better after this :) Thanks Tom, you're great!

  • listening to this..im getting that same feeling when i listen to nick drake

  • cmon guys. i love this album, but ya gotta admit: his style aint for everyone

  • 1 person pressed the 'dislike' button by mistake... There IS no other explanation. Tom is perhaps the greatest musical pioneer, innovator, transformer, song writer, genius. You gotta have a really, really rotten life and soul not to like this. Long live Tom!!

  • @KarmaNinja69 Im going to go press it for the second thumbs down. I am bored listening to this song.

  • @tsferg Do it again!! Do it again!! ...and don't forget to listen to and/or view what you want to listen to and/or view every now and then.

  • it's not perfection, it's imperfection what makes it so beautiful. the rusty voice, the missing notes, it feels alive and warm...

  • Tom Waits nos presenta aquí, con una "simple" melodía, una obra maestra. Ojalá que muchos puedan apreciar la sutil genialidad lograda a través de esta sencilla composición musical.

  • Who the fuck is the 1 person who doesn't like this song? Probably THE beset song ever written....IMO

  • @scatpornpooboy I dunno, but they're not a friend of mine.

  • @scatpornpooboy out of all the beset songs, this is THE one.

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard

this song just brought me to tears tom waits just brings you the raw beauty and heartache of things tom waits you truly are beautiful

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard

this song just brought me to tears

tom waits just brings you the raw beauty and heartache of things

tom waits you truly are beautiful

  • this is quite possibly one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard this song just brought me to tears its so beautiful that has only happened with one other song

tom waits you are do beautiful to describe in words

  • "I'm gonna take it with me when I go" Some days after arriving home from work, I sit on my back step with a cup of tea and look out across the field behind the house and wonder...what can we take with us? I don't mean possessions, but emotions or feelings rather. Can we take memories? I hope so, because they come with emotions attached to them. Can we take the memory of someone's voice? Whose voice and what words would I want to recall on the journey? What would you take?

  • @2WheelEscapeArtist I would take the voice of my ex lover. Her saying "I love you" for the first time. I've had 13 messages from her locked on my phone, and in my heart. Just in case i ever forget what they say. 13 messages, that was coincidentally that was our lucky number. Now, she doesn't even wear my old jimmy Hendrix shirt, or my sweater. She wasn't for the transition, even after all the promises she made to me. She's just a stranger again to me, singing in my heart. A beautiful song.

  • That picture of him as the scarecrow coupled with the music just seems to get me.

  • Best song by Tom Waits. And oh boy have i listened to all of them

  • Tom Waits closed with this one, alone at the piano, when I saw him at Boston's Orpheum Theatre; September/1999. Have seen a ton of concerts in my 5+ decades, but cannot recall any that topped this number on that night. One incredible performance by one magnificient performer.

  • So spine-tinglingly beautiful.

  • "...ain't no good thing ever dies..." With music like this and your voice, Tom, you have become immortal in my book. Thank you Tom for all this good music, and the more to follow.

  • It's almost refreshing to hear that some people will never truly get how fantastic this is. For those of us who do, we get to simply smile, keep the gem all to ourselves and just look on in wonderment. Kind of like a hidden treasure that is all there for the taking.

  • The best song in history

  • When he sings 'In that woman there's a heart I love' its sounds like he's smiling

  • How can you even make it through recording this whole song, when, by the end of the first line, you just want to curl up into a fetal position, and sink into a time lapsed dream state of bittersweet and melancholic forgetfulness? Anyone who has ever loved anyone, and then had to be apart from them, couldn't even finish the song...

    He's Quite a Man...

  • Sad...deep...profound...lovely. Thank you!

  • my new favourite song

  • Why I didnt know him before ?

  • 0 dislikes? this is good, tis a shame not as much people appreciate beautiful music

  • Semplice... pura... profonda !!!

  • Thank you for the beautiful post!

  • Just beautiful. An extremely sensitive and emotional piece of writing.

  • my man!

  • absolute genius song...this has been with me very close for past 11 yrs...

  • It's a pity some people will never have the finer sensibilities to appreciate such perfection.

Tom Waits, makes it hard to relate with the rest of the crowd...

  • @Romeowasbleeding1

You underestimate the taste of everyone else. Tom Waits is well known and respected by tons of people.

  • @Romeowasbleeding1 Blatant hipster.

  • @THECHACASAURUS

Ha ha I've never been called that before!

I'm not 100% clear on what a hipster is, my impression they're just some new trend, cooked up by bored over-privileged Westerners without real problems.

Nah, I play rugby, can take a punch, and generally I would say I'm an independent rightwing kind of guy.

That said, I still believe that it takes a finer sensibility to appreciate Tom Waits, most people just don't have the faculty. this song breaks me every single time though.

  • @Romeowasbleeding1 well said.

  • @Romeowasbleeding1

    you absolute dick.

  • @jimmymanager

Why on earth would you say that?

  • @Romeowasbleeding1 Leave 'some people' alone.

Just because they don't have the same taste as yours...

  • @roryphelan

I said it was a pity, and it is.

Music is only relative to a certain extent, after which differences in quality is insurmountable.

  • @Romeowasbleeding1 Agreed. That goes for all art forms, however.

  • @premiumlithium Very true

  • @Romeowasbleeding1 It's this sort of hipster attitude that probably puts a lot of people off. I love this music but I hate people being sanctimonious dicks about how awesome and different they are for liking it.

  • @jimmyhayers

Not sure what you mean by hipster attitude, since I'm not too clear on what a hipster is.

Me liking this music doesn't make me awesome. People who can't appreciate the beauty and the truth in this song are missing something though.

If listening to TW is a fad for some people... shame on them, but they might learn something.

I hate throwing around labels, I got over it when puberty ended.

  • @Romeowasbleeding1 Yeah I get you, you're so mature and I'm just being puerile etc etc Them not liking it doesn't mean they are somehow less receptive to great music, it just means they don't particularly like THIS great music. I hate being condescending and arrogant, I got over it when I was but a zygote.

  • @jimmyhayers

I think that this song, and much of TW stuff holds something that no other music does. It's a pity if some people can't appreciate this, and since TW is such a big part of my life. It does make it hard to relate with others.

That's not hard to appreciate is it?

Sorry bro, not trying to be condescending. Lol it's just that this comment has gotten me called a hipster a few times now.

  • @Romeowasbleeding1 I personally hate the label "hipster". But your comment embodies the negative aspects of the label "hipster".

  • beautiful upload

  • Another diamond from Mule Variations.

  • one of the greatest songs in the world. wonderful wonderful wonderful.

  • @HomleandSecurity .... who? me? you're so funny useless... useless Christian... son of broken contraceptive

  • @blueroseeyedboy The problem with Tom Waits is... it doesn't really matter which song you stumble upon... you really don't have a choice but to admit the above. It's like there were two worlds. It's nice to imagine... or even know, you're not completely alone in that other world. Cheers. Live your life and live it hard. That's really the only chance you gonna get.

  • grazie... è bellissima.
