  • its just train our mind ,

    nor for war

    was past.....

  • Respect!

  • When I think of Kendo it makes my hair stand on end because I can envision the blood spilt from which the art was formed.

  • A very philosophical conversation for youtube :)

  • kendo is tradition not comercial:(

  • fuck hoolywod movie 'last samurai' :(

  • Can anyone tell me that the seri of Katate-men of Shodai sensei in 1:11 is in wich match?

  • lol

  • @CareOMeterZero i walk barefoot all the time since i live near the country side :D

  • although i agree with @njoinvisablegirl 's point, i see no reason why we as individuals are unable to change this. if it is merely the environment that restricts us from enlightenment, what say those who have achieved satori and are able to incorporate it into their daily life? Try to see the perfection in what the imperfect human gives us. At the moment, we live in fear, yes, but nobody apart from ourselves is in our way to see the truth in living as a warrior.

  • thumbs up for the warrior whoops!!

  • Kendo is badass.

  • it woould be fun to watch the guys in comments when they witnes simple taiatari

  • hahaha warrior debates. chumps.

  • I am 14 and always wanted to study kendo. As a child I was very philosophical and viewed death as a part of life. I love to watch fighting and dream of becoming a kendo master. However, there are no kendo schools near my home and I feel as if I'll never achieve that dream. I swear that I will, one day, get a 10th degree black belt in kendo. Whether it takes 5 minutes or 50 years.

  • @rapist79 ....and you call yourself rapist ?

  • WAKA WAKA

  • to bad i will never do kendo, in my country there are no kendo dojo and even if they did exist , not compare to japan dojo...but i think that still not compare to the warrior in the past ( sry 4 my bad English )

  • @KumoKojiki There are kendo dojos in your country if the country you specified in your info is true. There are actualy some good ones with some high level teachers.

  • they are screaming like chickens woaatkakakakbarabara

  • @mmitza35 nice sarcasm, but in reality - if you would hear this woaatkakakakbarabara in Kendo battle you would shit and piss in your pants from fear. Remember - "Death is only outcome", not biggest score, nicest , moves, knockouts or longest jumps - DEATH - ultimate defeat.

  • @mmitza35 yeah I'll admit, the screaming kind of sucks... but the skills are impressive

  • What's the music in the beginning?

    Where can I get it?

  • I'm a WARRIORZ in WOW.

  • 1:11 ahahananaajahahahahhahahahajajaja!!!!!!!

  • What happend at 1:11 is only funny if it's not happening to you... I'm sure you would pee your pants if that guy was doing that in YOUR face...

  • @GuamKomudo I meant only that I like, if these bitter get a life

    PD: Judo is better stupid

  • I don't even understand what you just said... =P

  • Who want to learn Japanese with me online?

  • Fantastc movie...Good job!!! {•_•}

  • Kendo is a Beautiful Art of the Teaching of Zen, it teaches u to have a Strong Spirt, a Strong will to go forward, take all your stress and empty it out on someone, Scream from your lungs & not from your mouth, it gives u a better understanding of life, Respect for everyone, builds your Character, Trains & Disciplines your mind ! My Philosophy of kendo is "You Step on to that Floor, Even thou u dont want to get Hit, & You might get your Ass Kicked, its Got to Happen!" Kendo has Changed my Life !

  • why the fuck does he make those monkey noises! he sounds like a rabid baboon and swings his sword as if it was a towel!!! not very samurai like i think

  • @hekoka when you're long enough in some martial art you start to develop your own sound/scream that kinda represent your style and personality.this is common in kung-fu

  • @hekoka he's trying to screw with the other persons mind. got in 3 hits lol

  • @cfG21 so you can't raise your fist in victory but you can deafen your opponent with "baboon" like screams?! he looks like a terrible swordsman jerking his shinai as if it was a towel! i thought the shinai was supposed to represent the katana?! i've never seen anyone jerk the sword like that!

    (just my amateur opnion)

  • @hekoka i'm not a japanese artial artist so i can't explain that however in chinese martial arts there is something of a flick with the jian. Ponit is psychologically he did throw of the person and 3 hits with a sword would have left one heck of a mess.

  • @cfG21 this makes more sense but why would a chinese sword practitioner be allowed into a kendo competition under Kendo rules unless it was "free style sword" lol,

it would be like a boxer starting to throw "spinning back fists" in a boxing match!

  • @hekoka in mechanics a fulcrum is a pivoting point in which force can be amplified thus the flicking of the wrist creates a larger force towards the end of the blade. point is that his technique worked and fighting styles have to evolve and it doesn't make it less kendo. with my little understanding in kendo certain sounds have to be made when hitting certain points.if you listen to his yelling, it's the same what the opponent says at 1:02 so it's within rules. it may be a real kendo technique

  • @cfG21 im using the boxing analogy here once again. the spinning back fist works, it is a punch but it is not within the rules of boxing. i've attended kendo classes (not training at present) and i've never seen anybody use that move! he did get 5 hits but did he get points? im not sure because i know that a clean blow to the head gets u points!

  • @hekoka Then you as a kendo practitioner have all the right to critique the segment. However i bow out with 2 things .First from my research that yeller is most likely Masahiro Miyazaki. Even if he isn't it's in the Japan all kendo championships so those guys are no push overs. R@nd remember Mushashi was also an unorthodox fighter like showing up late to sword duels when the person was hungry and fighting with oars.

  • @hekoka By the way. That guy who hit using one hand is Kenji Shoudai, former winner of the All Japan Kendo Championships. He is a Jodan player, and the technique he was using was Katate Men, or one-handed head strike. No he did not get points from that, but the key aspect of using Jodan-no-kamae, or the aggressive stance, is to have a relentless spirit to overwhelm your opponent. Just saying.

  • @hekoka i went back and ched and it's 5 hits.are you a kendo practitioner? that may be an actual technique

  • wtf???

  • Im sorry, but no one here could even comprehend what it is to be a "warrior" we are too spoiled with our plush diets and soft beds. We do not know honor, we only know pride. We've never seen death, so we cannot fully appreciate life. We are too noisy with our rap music and loud cars. Our thoughts are cluttered and disorganized. noone who sits here and comments on stupid things like facebook and youtube has any idea of what it is to be a warrior....

  • @njoinvisablegirl Very well said Miss!

  • @njoinvisablegirl - Hagakure made quite clear that the warrior mind state is found within oneself, regardless of lifestyle, era or distraction. We can face death daily in meditation, since we're creatures of life it figures death is so close and on call. Very few bother to explore this though. through fear.

  • @Ragleif

I don't believe that 'just anyone' can be a warrior. Meditation is only a part of the equation, and it is the baby steps to that frame of mind. I'm not saying that true warriors don't come from this era, i know one or two...maybe... I'm saying that people shouldn't presume they are a warrior because they've watched a few episodes of naruto, and own a "ninja sword". It takes a certain personality type and grit.

  • I know enough about being a warrior to know I'm not one =D

I just like martial arts and find the mental aspect of meditation and clearing the mind, things of that sort AMAZING. It's so interesting, and from my little experience, meditation REALLY helps uncloud all the chaos in our lives. In my opinion, who needs meditation more than us, and our loud cars and music. We who live in all this chaos our minds never getting a moments rest, we NEED meditation! More than anyone

  • @njoinvisablegirl You speak at great length about something which you, according to you self, know nothing about. ("noone who sits here and comments on stupid things like facebook and youtube has any idea of what it is to be a warrior")

Besides, you speak as if all had a sense of honor 'back when', and as no one has it now. Think about it, you must see how narrow minded that seems. I assume that you do not truly believe that, so you should think more carefully on how you express yourself.

  • @somefuckstolemynick I cannot presume that you with your own 'narrow' mind could comprehend my philosophy.

  • @njoinvisablegirl

you're talking to the greatest military power in human history, it's those softies who know nothing of honor which currently control the world by the gun and soon to be robot, we have no need of honor, mcdonald's and spongebob are our no mind meditations, and youtube is our Sutra, so please find peace for your mind for our nation has found its peace in the magic of science and consumerist culture

  • @njoinvisablegirl i would watch those words very carefully. there are those of us who follow the path of a warrior in the modern age. i didnt have a car in Iraq,or a soft bed. and my diet wasnt what i would call plush.

  • @njoinvisablegirl And I am grateful every day, that I don't have to know.

  • @njoinvisablegirl I kinda think most people on here are missing the point. Most people cannot choose their 'plush' upbringings and backgrounds, they were born into it. If Samurai like Minamoto no Yoshitsune were born today in London...he wouldn't turn out a warrior. The fact that anyone is taking the time to sit an watch Kendo videos, and appreciate the art, instead of Justin Beiber and Beyonce, gets at least some respect from me

  • @njoinvisablegirl how about shut the fuck up woman.

  • @njoinvisablegirl modern day life is a massive struggle. politicians are like the warriors of today. and even they're corrupt so us normal warriors struggle even more. also if you were relating to real life. i fought my flatmates yesterday in a mock fight strikes to body only. got beat up. learnt a bit about fighting. so stfu really you pretentious, nonsensical ridiculous bitch lol.

  • @njoinvisablegirl then you dont know me

  • @rickyirishman

No, I don't know you, so who're you trying to convince? By writing that you're different does that make it any more of a reality for you? I was writing, mostly, in response to the "naruto" comments. Ignorantly, I doubt that bushido and ninjutsu have anything in common. Finally, would a true warrior feel the need to "prove" himself by replying to my piss-ant, ignorant, and over generalized comment on a website that was started by funny videos of animals and college students?

  • @njoinvisablegirl your words have obviously angered a lot of people they are an overstatement of a general population not everyone listens to rap... Their are thousands of people who don't lead a life that has been spoiled and more still that don't have "plush" diets... I have no difficulty with my thoughts I have learned how to let my thoughts float by and these comments on youtube are merely a way to pass the time until my sensei has the next lesson

  • @njoinvisablegirl What a load of crap

  • @njoinvisablegirl I don't say that i know what a warrior is,but don't put me next to you or try and say that what you say is fact about my personality (being stereotypical)

  • @njoinvisablegirl

    indeed.

i always wanted to be like a samurai warrior

unfortunatly i'm living into a society that relies to much on religion/science becoming to materialistic instead of spiritual.

people need to recognize Honor instead of pride.

  • You are fucking right...

  • @njoinvisablegirl how many people are claiming to know what it's like to be a "Warrior"? This style of fighting would almost never be used in the days we live in now, mainly because of technology advancing. I'm not a sadist, nor do i think killing is wise. But it's a shame that these arts are just "memorial" acts. any idiot can pick up a gun and shoot. and idiot can pick up a sword and swing away, but which takes more skill? I guess it's all about personal opinion though...

  • @njoinvisablegirl so how do you know almighty one?

  • @njoinvisablegirl

rap is spoiled these days, but rap of the 80's 70's was real rap, not the shit nowadays.

  • @njoinvisablegirl how true.....how ever you cant fully say you know that 100% for all you know i am a warrior

  • @njoinvisablegirl I disagree. Being a warrior has much more to do with than just seeing death or sleeping on a hard bed. The death statement leaves much to be desired. We all see death every fall and every winter. There are many kinds of warriors in existence in our time. Warriors of the mind, warriors of the pen, warriors of the fist, warriors of the gun, warriors of the bow. Being a warrior is something from out of ones soul flows. Being a well rounded warrior is having mastery over all

  • @njoinvisablegirl I cant really agree that much with your statement. Being a "warrior" dosent mean you're some divine front figure who spend all his time fighting for honour and justice, putting aside all modern ways. A warrior is simply someone who'se skilled in fighting, through training or experience. So useing the word "warrior" would be rather incorrect for your..hrm.. romanticized.. wiew of a "warrior". Knowing death dosent make you a good warrior, accepting it however, is more accurate.

  • lol gueiys!!! i luvvv bleach n stuf <33!! i wan 2 learne dis so i can b all kewl lik bleach n stuf lol xD! <333

  • the only reason im watching this is because i saw ninja assasin on hbo

  • i see yellow & green cheese.

  • hahaha at 1:10 i laughed to hard XD

  • In short, it is to train our hearts

  • Facing your your fear is a major part of the Warriors journey(it's called courage/as opposed to ignorance) Turning your weaknesses into strengths. Being calm within..(learning humility-checking your ego at the door, so you can be taught)

and secure..knowing you have nothing to prove. That's why , so often the BEST-regardless of style-are usually the nicest people you'll ever meet!

  • The way of the warrior is more then focus on combat, it is a way of life. To master yourself through selflessness, self control, compassion, respect, honor, loyalty, duty, wisdom in every aspect of your life. Before even picking up a weapon one must seek this mindset. Many comments here lack many of those traits, due to blind rage which shows no self control or decency at all. One must face death without fear and become one with nature, stepping into battle with a clear mind.

  • I like the video but I'm not going to get in the debate below.

  • @Valorynias , in all honesty i agree, and for everyone else, i have met real American soldiers, i live near a military base and i can tell you the codes of conduct they practice are more "blow everyone up because the government told us to" attitude, or a "we are right because we are the ones who where on the battlefield" attitudes, samurai where on the battlefields, the looked death in the face, guns allow us to shoot from a safe distance. i hope i made my point.

  • CHIICKEEN FIIIIGGHTTT !!!!!

  • @compri the only comment i like to hear :D now a days people debate instead of commenting >_<

  • They should deploy some of those in Afghanistan and see whether they can win against an IED l0l

  • LOL... those sounds.. is like cock fight

  • I love Kendo. I'm 16 years old and I'm practicing it for 5 years now. It has changed me as a person, I believe. I'm mentally stronger and far more disciplined. I can' t be for sure at my age ofcource but what I do know is that I'm strong.

  • @jeroeniskoning you are absolutely right...introspection is developed with kendo and as you've said, you should be both mentally and physically stronger and more disciplined as before after practicing for 5 years.

  • bullshitsu

  • "Even though the steel sword has been replaced by bamboo.... It still hurts like hell."

  • @dogongood if kendo hurts you doing it wrong.

  • @TheNikosawa I'm not reffering to Kendo. pretty sure getting smacked in the ass by that would hurt

  • Kendo is only a sport. In a true fight the one who is cut first is done. The step as you attack while screming and posturing afterwards has no place in reality of the fighting moment. It IS about where the sword hits. Without the awareness of the body the mind has is lost.............................

  • @nagualshadow Oh and i suppose your comment is actually well documented right? Get real dude, training does make u better, once u can avoid the hit from the shinai while wearing the body armour u can definitely have more chance in an actual REAL fight to avoid a punch! I do agree kendo is first of all a sport but u cannot deny its martial part! And my belief is that for achieveing the ultimate martial art of the samurai u must study all: Kendo , Kenjutsu and Iaido ..then u are complete!

  • i can kick your azz !!

  • personally i dont care what its for, its fun, thats my reason for doing it.

  • I must point out that kendo always have and always will be a sport, all japanese marial arts ending with 'do' is sports, the real thing is the ones ending with 'jutsu', kendo is sport with a sword, kenjutsu is fighting with a sword...

  • i disagree, 'do' actually refers to way. Because it ends with a 'do, doesn't mean that they are all sports.

  • @frankhaugen Are you nuts? Aikido ain't no sport! However, there are some sportive forms like Tomiki aikido. But for the rest of aikido, it is no sport.

  • LOL this is just retarded.

  • try it sometime. before you say something's retarded or dumb just because it's not part of your everyday life, try it first. it may give you something to be passionate about more than trying to belittle things you are not familiar with. cause let me tell you it doesn't feel retarded when you have to do something over and over because they demand perfection in your strike. it's not about breaking your opponent, it's about breaking your ego and knowing perfection can be pursued but never achieved

  • @borofalcon101 LOL your just retarded.

  • @cescOBcescD takes one to know one i guess

  • The purpose of practicing Kendo is: To mold the mind and body, To cultivate a vigorous spirit, And through correct and rigid training, To strive for improvement in the art of Kendo, To hold in esteem human courtesy and honor, To associate with others with sincerity, And to forever pursue the cultivation of oneself. This will make one be able: To love his/her country and society, To contribute to the development of culture And to promote peace and prosperity among all peoples.
  • It is not worth arguing on the internet for different points of view. However I shall tell you what it means to be a warrior. It is to go through life without fear, to endure pain, to sacrifice. It is to protect your family, protect your honor and never back down. To kill without remorse but never take an action without compassion. I am sorry to say but most practitioners of modern martial arts know nothing of this. To be one, Mind, Body, and Sword, or pencil, or guitar to master with passion.

  • @Velorynias Warriors are never afraid?

    Hahahahaha.

  • @Velorynias The wisest warrior knows when to back down.

  • @Velorynias what do you mean with pencil?

  • Actually there's lots of modern martial artists that know that stuff... The Shaolin are warriors, and so are many people in Thai Land. The Thai fighters fight with the same mentality of their warriors back in the day, with many of the same techniques and mind set. You just need to go to these kinds of places where people do not live life with the same view of what is important in life as we do. Shaolin live in their own little world, with their own mind sets and ways of thinking.

  • @Velorynias

and what of action through inaction, what of the warrior who wins without fighting, by constructing a robot to do it for him, now that is a warrior with a mind, a true Taoist

  • To all those responding to my post: Harness your own beliefs as I do mine. To me, someone who follows the Bushido in everyday life, is descended from samurai lineage, and has seen the decadence over the years, it is a mockery. An insult to those who died in the Boshin War, to those who died to defend their way of life and lost everything to modernization. Thanks to the influence of western powers mainly America. Honor does not exist in this modern world of corruption and greed.

  • @Velorynias "descended from samurai lineage"

Isn't Western Martial Art from a Chivalric lineage.

    "Thanks to...western powers...mainly America."

No, thanks to PEOPLE who don't take it seriously enough, and thanks to PEOPLE who lose track of where they come from, who are afraid of themselves.

"Honor does not exist in this modern world."

I concur. The way of the warrior, though is NOT exclusive to Samurai.

I am a Knight, Holy Warrior, and I practice my Way in my own cultural context, as you do.

  • I, for one, am shocked that religion got involved here, especially because I think that Wishbones point was that they used Christianity to control the people. I actually have a great love for Jesus' teachings, but they are often used as mind control and those who claim to kow them often defy them. Simply put, Jesus is awesome, the BS attatched to him is not. Thats why I like Buddha, he does a lot of the same stuff, just with less BS.

  • This is so much bullshit -.-

Look at 1:42, why did he not strike ?

And these guys die like 10 times and continue fighting -.-

  • who is the white kendoka at 1:13?

  • A gun, the most efficiant and modern way for one person to kill another, hardly any technique needed, so simple a young child could use it. However, no matter how advanced a weapon could be, no matter how efficiant, it will never match, nor come close, to the mystical feeling of holding a sword.

  • @KingNuada1

I have to agree. A gun is a point and click thing: press the trigger, death issues forth. A perfect weapon for our time; press a button, the desired result issues forth. A sword, on the other hand (and, let's be fair, a knife, or a baseball bat) requires you to walk over to your victim and make your desires concrete by the sweat of your brow. I think anything that requires us to expend actual effort to do something is quickly becoming mystical to we industrialised folk.

  • @KingNuada1

While I largely agree, there is some technique and training required to use a gun *effectively*. Insurgents with AK-47s and no training shoot a lot of bullets, but don't often hit their targets.

But I agree that guns are more efficient and require less training...and are also less cool.

  • This video thanksfully well covers my poor English to explain about Kendo. Some people don't understand kendo, but I think thay cannot understand kendo unless they really master kendo. Therefore, let them misunderstand even though they are still interested. If you are really interested, just try it.

  • @6shig9

Well, you may have "poor english", but I think your comment was very well said!

And I think your English is just fine :)

  • @nuculearbazooka How nice of saying! Thank you. (^-^)

  • i don't think this is the most efficient use of a sword. The Japanese sword technique is usable, but I don't think its the best. Their stances aren't the best nor how they use the sword. A real Killer would utilize a much more flexible stance for horizontal movement, and adopt a further distance from the opponent for maximum response time and planning. The sword? a shorter 1 handed sword would dominate, more distance, and it's even faster.

  • I think you would study itmore before you say someting. The two handend use of a katana reasure you a very good kontrol - wich you dont have 1 handed sword. And if youshall look at speed look at the tip (you only use 1-4 inches of the blade) and not at the arms - huge diffrens in speed. The one thing that is nice with the katana is that you can use it both with one hand and with two hannds. And there a alot of diffrent kenjutsu schools so dont judge if from just kendo.

  • I'm not saying that it's not "good" i just don't believe it to be "BEST" I understand the double handed control theory and what not. I'm just saying I think there are other factors in sword fighting that are more powerful in combination that the ones used here.

  • You said: "The Japanese sword technique" and not "Kendo with a shinai". How would a shorter one handend sword grant you more distans when you can use the longer katana with one hand also? And the two-handed grip grants you a very accelerating speed if cuting is done right - more than I have ever experinced with a one handed cutting sword. So more distans - seems unlikely. More speed - when I see it I'll belive it. The critic in strategy and stance I can agree on though - to some degree.

  • oh well the speed and distance is because their techniques don't seem to include single handed lunges, and things of that sort like in fencing. While shorter, it is a much farther and faster technique.

  • stop talk about stuff you dont know

  • LOL. Okay sword play master. oh wait...yeah that's what i thought. your NOT. :|

  • @VikingII

But in a practical sense, a "real killer" would utilize a standard Glock 17 9mm Handgun- not a sword. The purpose of Kendo is to cultivate the spirit of the Warrior, to cultivate a sense of community, to cultivate virtue. Your comment is just another example of the endless debate over different styles of Martial Arts. But in the end, that's all it will ever be. An Endless Debate, with valid points and stubborn opinion. Ultimately what it comes down to is the Martial Artist's spirit.

  • well said

  • While you have a sound argument you cannot negate the fact that the samurai sword is legendary for a reason. Shorter sword, much like the chinese short sword, may be faster and are made lighter for this purpose. A katana will bend, warp, or even break this type of sword rendering it useless. Know that the katana can still be used one handed, much like M. Musashi did, and is a good al around wepon.

  • @bushin64

Bull-feathers. The Katana was a blade designed for one thing: Cutting down unarmored peasants. It is the ultimate expression of the need for feudal landowners to keep control of rioting farmers. The geometry of a katana and the style of use very quickly become questionable when asked to cut through anything that might take more than one blow. The katana's true innovation is its composite nature: hard on the edge, soft in the spine. It is otherwise quite limited.

  • @JohnnyWishbone85 - Wow! Not only have you twisted historical and current facts but you've been able to politicize your own leanings into an inanimate object. You've got way more problems than what can be addressed here. Good luck in your efforts to "educate" us.

  • @bushin64

500 characters and you've got me figured out. I'm impressed. If you're referring to my less than charitable description of what the katana was designed for, and inferring some anti-Japanese bias, I invite you to consider that european feudal lords accomplished the same task with religion. Christianity was Europe's katana. Landowners are jerks no matter where they are.

  • @JohnnyWishbone85 - I can't argue with that. God's sword is mightier than all.

  • @bushin64 People like you really piss eveyone else off, God doesnt have a sword, why not his ak47? does he even need a sword? why does everything have to have religion in it, cut it out, brining religion into the affairs of man is pointless it will be a continual debate ,that i doubt will ever end as just about everyone is too stubborn to admit that they're wrong or willing to comprimise, so leave this crap for a chatroom or bored people.

  • @kyleg5359 - Wow! What's got your panties all tied in a wad? I was just agreeing with Johnnywishbone. I was arguring with him and terminated our frustration by finding common ground with him. I hope you are feeling better.

  • Who knew Bruce Lee was still alive and switched to Kendo?

  • My code is that ALL would be treated with dignity and respect and honor is not bestowed upon me but by the tip of my blade for I am a woman. And now I have the power, to give not just life but death as well. And so the test of Character has now been given to me. What will I do with this power?

  • Yes the world is a too violent place. It takes the spirit of a true warrior to self-control. When somebody attacks first or does hurt somebody out of reaction, it is telling the world about his/her weakness. The kendoka defeats himself then he is able to triumph over his opponent.

  • Ill respect the USMC as warriors. However all modern military are not "warriors". They are mere soldiers like the ashigaru. A soldier is one who is armed for battle. A warrior is one who believes in a code first and foremost who treats life as a battlefield and is ready to die at any moment for their beliefs and for their honor. There within lies the difference. Modern martial arts however are a mockery of their former self. Sports for kids with such watered down techniques. Kendo you slide -_-

  • we're you born with a shinai stick in your hand and the spirit of a warrior like

  • @Velorynias

true-yet I wonder if both the battlefield and the stage of training have either the honor of winning 4 a price of peace or death as a cost 2 mother earth and father time???

  • I agree

  • @Velorynias

Clearly, you've never met many professional soldiers. Most of them come closer to our modern ideal of what constitutes a warrior than most feudal lords ever did.

  • @Velorynias The USMC are not warriors at all.

  • @Velorynias mordern martial arts a mockery? no...modern martial arts teaches more than how to kill. thats the difference between then and now. modern martial arts teach warrior ethics to men and women who live life like its a battle field. martial arts is way more than killing methods friend. nowadays the "opponent" is the external forces that are more abstract than concrete...i hope u understand.

  • @markell89 Absolutely, but by restricting the patterns and techniques that one could use, they are restricting the creativity and the skill that it would take to truly do battle. Western Martial Arts does not restrict your moves as much (I mean, of course, Renaissance reconstruction and not fencing), so that is why I practice WMA. The mind is still honed, it is absolutely real, and it puts us in touch with our past.

  • @masterfeatherpen oh i see wat ur gettin at. well i guess the real question is to wat extreme must the techniques be used to actually learn any intellectual significance? or maybe its a preference. i'm more than a fighter so i choose to look at martial technique as more than a "word" in a "combat" notebook. my words strive to be like that of shakepearian measures. maybe so the WMA is more real...but to wat measure? isnt life real enuff?

  • @markell89 I guess, but shouldn't martial arts hone one's fighting capabilities as well as hone one's mind? WMA is real, and it also forces the warrior to find a balance between power and delicacy, speed and placement, which can (and should) be brought into one's life, even when one is not fighting. It also takes the aggression that humans experience on a day to day basis and channels it into a useful, beautiful pursuit that resonates in the western mind. Call it Kendo with Western application.

  • @Velorynias i second that emotion

  • Kendo is one of the few arts that still teach the REAL martial arts. It's not about hitting, or winning, or getting money or medals. It's about how to treat other people on the street, how to care for others, even if you don't know them. How to be a respectful, honorable person. As they said in the last samurai. They live by what is a forgotten word, Honor.

  • @GuamKomudo

"vKendo is one of the few arts that still teach the REAL martial arts. It's not about hitting, or winning, or getting money or medals. It's about how to treat other people on the street, how to care for others, even if you don't know"

Oh please. The martial arts were developed for fighting and warfare. The REAL martial arts are the arts that train to FIGHT, plain and simple. Kyokushin, Judo, Jujutsu, etc.. These are as real as real gets. BTW, I'm NOT saying Kendo is not real.

  • They did not teach simply hurting others... You have no idea of martial arts if that's what you think. If you have a power to destroy other people with fighting skills and abilities, that is like carring a gun, and if you are not responsible or respectful and have an unclear mind, get angry easy ect, you will hurt someone. They did not just teach to kill people, they have to teach much more, like WHY to hurt people, how to treat others. Your knowledge of martial arts is very shallow...

  • Right because people that carry guns are all insane blood thirsty, and without studying zen and the code of Bushido they are not qualified or responsible enough to carry a weapon, please. People who are of unclear mind, and those that are violent are not usually found in the local dojo, they're found in prison. Majority of Martial arts ARE about defeating your opponent, regardless of the art, that is the ultimate goal. Even Kendo, hence the absolute domination of competition in the art, sorry.

  • @patio87 Majority of martial arts, yes. Not Kendo. Kendo is a discipline more than anything. The "domination of competition" as you put it, is there because that's the best way to practice the discipline. Attacking a dummy who can't defend itself can only teach you so much. The "opponent" is there for you to better yourself, not defeat. The fact that it's a competition means very little.

  • @GuamKomudo

"As they said in the last samurai. They live by what is a forgotten word, Honor. "

You know I love the last samurai as much as the next guy, but the Samurai didn't fight for honor, they fought to hold on to their oligarchical strangle hold over Japan.

  • You fail, the Samurai had been fighting for a LONG time, way before that was even going on...

  • @Velorynias so very true.

  • Shut up... There's hundreds of "mere soldiers" who have died for you and your family and your right to say that... The way of the warrior is over, because our weapons are far to advanced for anyone to have any real martial skill over another to win. The US Military has codes, and people die for you and their country and their friends all the time. If you don't respect that, then screw you...

  • @Velorynias Did you just call me a fucking SOLDIER.. No we are Marines. Devil Dogs. Hounds from Hell... The Japs feared us in the day just like every modern military fears us now. Die at any moment for their beliefs? You don't know any Marines do you?

  • @maloso1313 HAHA, you sound very hard internet thug! Come down to the Palestinian terretories and I will show u how real SOLDIERS do it there... You wouldn't survive from sun rise to sun set. You conquered the world because you developed the dollar, and we because salves to it. And btw... Japs feared you??? You fool when someone fears you, it means he holds deep respect for you. Go and learn your language dumbo. And btw, Japs smoked the shit out of your guys, read some books!

  • @Velorynias

"Modern martial arts however are a mockery of their former self. Sports for kids with such watered down techniques. Kendo you slide -_-"

Complete bullshit, go back to the renaissance faire you idiot, leave the martial arts to the martial artists and the war fighting to the war fighters.

  • ALL regular military are warriors, but remember you still take orders and there is a difference. Wheather you we in the military of not and you study martial arts particulary KENDO, you will find changes in your life, as well as your approach the things. This cultivation brings more of that self disipline forth. That is all I was saying. I served in the USMC, I meant no ill will, some of you out there like DarthChuckwa are sensitive. But that is life, deal with it! Your on your own!

  • Please forgive me if I misunderstood you.

But you did say, "...we were lied to in the Marines when we were told "we were real warriors", far from the truth..." I suppose I got the wrong message.

I've never been in the military, but many of my relatives and friends have been, or are currently enlisted in. My respect and admiration for them may have got the better of me. I meant no offense.

  • Thats is fine, enough said, but it is better to talk things through. The world is already a very violent place. Yes I did say lie, I meant it, but didn't realize that it was a poor choice of words. The word was too vague, and more explaination is required. I believe "any" martial art can help anyone with that desire in mind. It is the persons own chosing if they want to use it for good or evil. To me life is that simple, at least now it is.

  • @DarthChuckwa: KENDO is about you, you being a warrior and not being a warrior. But if you pursue this art, then you become it. It is a true disipline. Probably having served in the Marines as long as I did, I like the entire martial, and military aspect of this art. Guns have their place, so do edged weapons of all types, so do "empty hand" techniques. Weapons are weapons, the mind as you know is also a weapon. The list goes on and on, what you do w/ the wpn determines if ur good or bad

  • You implied that Marines weren't real warriors in the statement that I responded to. And I knew that you were a Marine when I responded.

I will not stand by while some one implies that a Marine is not a warrior, even if the person who does that is a Marine himself.

  • @DarthChuckwa Since your so deft at figuring out the whos and whats of what I implied. What is "it" that I truly meant. Do you actually think I would degrade something that I earned. Marines are warriors, but you are still told what to do, remember "ORDERS". When you are on your own, really on your own, you will be faced with two choices in life, ALWAYS! Most of them are GOOD the other is evil. Some choices are different, to me this is a higher addition to all the training I had.

  • Kendo is a sport now, however and would have to look very different to be considered something else. Winner was just a term I used for the one that would get the point in a match (having struck the killing blow first.

I didn't get if you were asking if I am a fencer myself or if you were talking about philosofical aspects of Kendo. I am: european longswordfencing.

I came across this clip looking for similarities between kendo and my fencing so I'm seriously intrested in wich ways I am wrong

  • @Qhorim You know, we have one Kenshi( swordsman) in our dojo that actively teaches european swords techniques and fencing. Outside of the fact that he is taller than the rest of us. He is someone to be reckoned with, his skill and disipline is good, tecnique with the Japanese style is good ( but need improvement, but then again so does everyones), but you can notice his Eurpoean style comes loose during Keiko (sparing one on one), when he cuts/strikes it is different than the rest.
