The french state has created this "Idea" of a french "nation" , les gaulois, to unite us better.
But in truth the gaulois were a minority since the Fall of the Roman Empire.
They were in decline long before that also.
Since Charlemagne and Clovis, most french are metis between Frank and Gaulois, but with a majority of franks especially in the north.

It doesn't matter that the franks are frome Germany. They are still french, It's the same as calling the English germans. They were both areas of modern day germany, but intermarried with the locals and adopting latin into their language. calling the english german, is as stupid as calling the franks french. sure they mixed with the gallo-roman population, but they also mixed with the saxons and their relatives, the rhine franks for example. they didn't adopt latin into their language, they learned it next to it, to be able to communicate with the gallo population. Until the 10th century the frankish kings were able to talk their frankish dialect.

what about you using a history book...i said its nonsense to call the english german, even with the anglo-saxons conquering their land, because then you could also call all the french kings german. i told you the franks spoke two languages, latin (gallo-roman) and frankish. however, they have always been a minority in their french dominions and so they stopped speaking frankish around the 10th century. in fact, french contains a lot of old german words, like jardin, bleu, marquis etc.
