Ferrel and Reillys version had a louder and more invovled orchestra backing to help thier cause.Bowie and Bing have the better voices. I did bust a gut laughing @ the end of the comics version though.
@numba1spartan You seriously can't tell the difference of quality between the singing of Bing Crosby & David Bowie - who are legends and that of the drunken, soulless, auto-tuned bleating of Will Ferrel & John Reilly???
Wow - my brother just told me to check this out - talk about something beautiful to the ears and cool to watch - for every generation...then and now...and in the future. Ruth
Actually, if you watch closely, you will see the animosity between them. Bing wanted something traditional and Bowie wanted to show his range. A lot of jabs made, and they were going to prevent its release, but Bing died just before, so it was allowed on air
@TomLandryHwy oddly enough many, fine men and women of my generation are coming back from 2 wars that lasted longer than WW2 in terms of American involvement. And they are coming back to an economy without the resources to support them. So they will also have to rebuild it on their backs to pay for your retirement. I would probably hold off on the slander...
Nice song but empty words. 34 years later the world is far from this peaceful hope. It is even worse. No amount of Christmases will bring peace on earth itself.
I was around 8 when this first aired, and even back then the tension in the air made my butt sweat. Watch the John C. Reilly / Will Ferrell reenactment for a good chuckle.
@djdksf1 Bing Crosby was a huge fan of Bowie's vocals and HE invited David to be on his Christmas Special. Man, some people are just stupid, but IGNORANCE annoys's the hell out of me.
I have to watch this every year. (UN)fortunately I am old enough to remember watching this on TV when it first aired in the 70s. It was bizarre and amazing and I can still recall thinking WTF? I wish I could have recorded it then. Without the ability to replay it, I was left wondering if it was as good as it seemed. Now it is one of those holiday revisits I enjoy taking since the computer age. Merry Christmas and thanks for posting this.
Wonderful duet between one of the greatest performers of the last century and...Bing Crosby. Just kidding -- Der Bingle was ever the hepcat, wasn't he? I'm not sure audiences could have imagined a more disparate pairing at the time -- Bowie just off his androgynous, drug-addled years, and the fatherly Crosby, with his passion for cardigans and golf, probably epitomized the gulf between generations...which is why it's perfect. And who'd have guessed then that Bowie's career would match Bing's?
This is one of my favorite Christmas songs ever...I am such a big David Bowie fan anyways...but I love Bing Crosby too cuz I love the film White Christmas. ;-D
Absolutely beautiful song....performed just 1 month before Bing Crosby's death, and aired on television for the first time a little more than a month after his death in 1977....Close your eyes and just listen...My favorite Christmas song of all time coming from a most unlikely pairing....Peace on Earth, and Merry Christmas Everyone!!
what a wonderful duet! I love David Bowie. actually everything i got for Christmas had to do with him. anyway, merry Christmas everyone! God bless David! And all you guys, too. :)
@bearo657 You ARE kidding, right? Just your attempt to get a rise out of people? Well, if that's what turns you on...whatever. Before anybody takes this lame attempt at bait, this was a written and rehearsed bit. Ummmm....duh?
Great clip. Bing looked and sounded great at 74. Bowie sounded great as well. He also is way ahead of his time in hair and clothing style. No big collars on his shirt, no bell bottoms or side burns. This is 1977 and he looks like hes styled for the early 80's. Cool.
A great clip from Bing Crosby's last Christmas special from 1977. A duet of Mr. Crosby & David Bowie makes it so sweet to enjoy it every holiday season.
I can only imagine when they weren't filming, Bing would just stare at Bowie out of the corner of his eyes with this menacing look and say; "I don't know who the Hell you are boy...but something makes me wanna slap you with the back of my hand. Didn't we save your ass in the war?"
But damn it if they don't harmonize in counterpoint brilliantly!
I feel so blessed for loving and being loved by a man, with a boy's heart who, whatever he does, makes my heart pound for him like a drum ...so so so grateful!!!
I remember first seeing this as a child and it took a hold of me then and still does 40 years later. It is one of my favorite songs of all time... Thank you Bing and David....
@macuban18 Sure it would have. We just wouldn't call it that. We would all be Pagans and there'd be a swell Winter Solstice Festival, and we'd gather around with our families and have a nice dinner and decorate a tree and so forth.
What makes this song so magical is that Bing didn't really know a lot about this new, young singer from England. David knew of Bing but they were from two different generations. What they each brought to the table makes this song truly magical. :)
My mom loved Bing Crosby so anything he sang she loved and christmas time my mom put her all in making my sister and I's holiday the best and making sure we knew we were loved always. I love you mom!!!!!!!!
She is looking down upon you from heaven and I am sure is very proud of you, always remember the love your mom has for you and it will always stay in your heart.
I just showed this to my 88 year old mother-in-law and tears came to her eyes. Her husband who passed away almost 20 years ago very much resembled Bing Crosby. Absolutely beautiful! What a classic!
