Traumatized by this song? Don't be silly! I've loved the song since I was a little child, and yes I was fortunate enough to sing it in class, too. That was in the 70s, mind you, so perhaps the children back then were mentally stronger than those of your generation. We were certainly not traumatized by this song ;)

Streets of London or streets of Athens, Madrid, Lisbon, New York etc :( this song is so sad and yet it reminds us that anybody can arrive to these terrible conditions : homeless!
I hadn't heard this song until about a month ago, but it is truely beautiful and i think a perfect tribute to the beautiful people forced to live on the streets of london as well of those struggle to get by in life. <3
Have had to put the mute into operation on this one having just remembered to look up the most hated track it was ever my misfortune to be forced to sing in junior 2 class. This is without doubt the most depressing song ever written and imprinted into my mind as an aging hippy in the 80's decided it was lovely for 8 year old's to sing every music lesson. This song touches people right in the bowels, Only 6 dislikes, people are too traumatized to look it up.
sorry, did i strike a cord, i couldnt possibly compete with your witty and articulate response you insecure, inept little shite. No doubth, your the sort of guy that resorts to online bashing due do a lack of any degree of social grace. God bless you.. ;)
@dereckdoherty27 You did not strike a cord but when you send a hotmail response to me entitled "tosser" you expect what? I see you are not aware of or responsible for your own actions.
@terrortorn My dad said the same! He went to a school in Harrogate in the 70's and exactly the same thing happend! I wonder if it's the same school and teacher?
@tombland10 No, unfortunately not, I was at primary school in the North East in the early 80's. But from what you have said the misery this caused is deep rooted indeed.
@ClassicGreenery Actually, this is the original. You must've misunderstood: Ralph Mctell originally wanted to call this song Streets of Paris, but he found out that there was a tune with a quite similar name. He goes on to explain he figured it was like this in many places besides Paris, and since he knew London so well, he called it after that city. So this IS the original :)
Great Video to this very moving song, I am always amazed at the amount of work people put into these videos to upload for our enjoyment Thank you, perhaps this will make people stop and think, and perhaps stop whining and count their blessings
I saw him in a small venue in Frankfurt, Germany around 1974. My girlfriend's father was the entertainment editor of the Stars and Stripes newspaper and he gave me a press pass to go and see him, I had never heard of him but I went anyway. There were only 20 some people there and he had us all come up on the stage and we sat around him like at a camp fire. When he sang Streets of London there was not a dry eye around the "camp fire".
@elizabethosler the chords are: C/G/Am/Em/F/C/G/C I ain't gonna write down the entire scheme, but you got now all the chords this song was built upon. So shut the *peep* up if you don't know what you're talking about - I do, you apparently don't/

"Yet all the while my Lord I meet, in every London lane and street." From a poem by Richard LaGallienne(written in the 1890's) entitled "Second Crucifixion". "Poor Lazarus shall wait in vain, and Bartimaeus still go blind. The healing hem shall n'er again be touched by suffering humankind. Yet all the while I see them rest, the poor and outcast, on His breast." This poem just might be a response to Nietzsche's "God is Dead" reasoning. I heard it read by his daughter Eva La Galienne on an LP.
song is great,I first heard it from Anti Nowhere League n really like it tho it is pretty raw punk rock but this version is pretty talented musically. From 3:13 - 3:38 can relate to a lot of Vietnam vets. I don't know about all but some homeless wear signs indicating they're vets but vets from Vietnam are in their late 50s early to mid 60s and I see guys that look in their early 40s trying to pass off as a nam vet. The real vets are the forgotten heroes from a land where no one cares sadly.
Do good to others. You cant take bricks and gold with you when you die. But you can take your last breath, knowing you did good instead of evil, you gave instead of took and that you did matter to people. That is what legacy is about. Not the wealth you can lose in an instant.
@MyNameWasntAvailabl3 well, he plays chords too. A friend thaught me how to play guitar It didn't took me very long, but as it's really all basic chords, anybody who can play guitar can play this song. It really isn't that hard...It's just as hard as "House Of The Rising Sun" and that isn't hard to learn either ;)
@DeepSoul1960s how long did it take you and did you learn it to play like its played in this song or just chords? i guess you must be very talented then ;)
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful , The song helped me take up the guitar all those years ago. Lovely to see him now, as such a genuine and good man still.
@fatcatandhappy your comment is so true.with people who have so much to people who have nothing. the emptyness in their eyes will always haunt my soul. god bless them all
@CaptainKubla I like you. You don't spout the words of the Church everywhere. You just live as you want to (by the Bible) and it makes you a better person for it. Kudos to you sir, kudos.
Im 13 years old and this song touched my heart. Its amazing and I love it. A choir sung it at my school and from then on I couldn't get it out my head.
@davelloyd2005 Oh i'm gonna get a shitstorm of hate for this but; he makes a point. If I may direct you to the process of 'natural selection' and evolution then you will become aware that since a lot of these lands in Africa and the Middle East are barren wastes where there is no water and the soil produces no crops, surely that's an indication to either leave said place and accept that it is not a suitable place to live. By sending millions to them every year we are prolonging a poor existence.
A friend told me about this song. It is quite amazing and reminds me of all the homeless I see on the streets in our neighborhood. They are forgotten and I have sat and talked to some of them to realize that they are like me but had something hard come into their lives. Thank you Ralph for giving this to the world and reminding us that 'there by the Grace of God go I" Godspped..
This is the best song ever written. I remember when I was a child, this would come on the radio. I would run up to my bedroom grab my guitar, and sit there and sing along to it. It wasn't of course til I got older, that it struck me just how brilliant this song is. The emotions that run through my body when I hear it are out of this world. What I wouldn't give to change the world, and peoples thinking towards it, and each other. Peace to all!
This song has touched many people in a positive way and, continues to do so. It's more poignant today in a divided UK & world where the greedy bastards in Governments have served their rich vile scum friends and created mass poverty, misery and hate.
it chokes me so bad to think that we still live in ignorance of all our brothers and sisters suffering, and until we realise that some of the most caring and compassionate souls live rough, people who have nothing but who would go all out to help u if they could.i was homeless for 4 yrs and can truely say there really are some earth angels amongst the masses of sister souls at such a disadvantage.having said that there are those who seem to have such young eyes, and hearts so light, angels of man x
I know this is a long shot, but when I was about 8 this song was sung to me by a bling man called Paul he was a friend of Evelyn who was looking after me and was in a relationship with my dad called Eric, she used to call him Dick, I would love to hear from anyone who may know where Evelyn or Paul is. this would have been in Upper Norwood (Crystal Palace) Gypsy Hill, London about 1969.
@thyzeke Reminded me of a hard wee time i had way back......different dog now.....and setteled with a lovely partner, cat own house....and dog ....man&dog comment sent chills up my spine....just thought i'd say...!
just uploaded my first attempt at a cover of this song, not sure if everyone will like it, but please please have a little listen, would be much appreciated! :) x
i know there is lots of sad stories and people in the world. but i think, as a race, looking into the past dosent solve any of the problems we face. instead of feeling sad for the homeless, we should help them (im not complaining about the song, its amazing, but im just saying we need to try to make a difference)
Yes, the world is a hard place all right, but it doesn't have to be this way....it's greed....!!..yer i saw the bag lady he was singing about in the early 70's , has she walked round south ken in London with her life in about ten bags.
What had happend to her and her like, i don't know...she never said notting and may be it is better left that way.
@martys1916 Part right!! You should also be ashame on behalf of all the cruel people who abuses animal/cats just as well as the ones who don,t care about other persons!!
The worst beast in the world, is the human. The human rase is the worst animals who ever walk on earth!
Saw him in the seventieswith my.first boyfriend. This song makes me cry to this day. It broke my heart & so did the boyfriend. But it still makes my heart swell...
this is just such a good song full of meaning. Phil Collins tried the idea with "another day in paradise" which is a good song, but not as good as this.
an American guy came n sang this to our school assembly as a child, it made me cry. Not long ago I saw a guy with no legs in west london pushing himself along the streets with his hands on a piece of wood with some type of wheels under it, and he was going though black bins outside shops, it's not just cardboard city, i've seen it all over london to this day, british ppl sleeping outside Buckingham Palace on the ground n in shop doorways today. A good novel: Down & Out In London & Paris (Orwell)
Well, U'r rite, mate. My comment was pretty emotional... Those I've met along the way /most of them/, were begging not just 4 money, but 4 something else, we're not able to share. They are a big question 4 me, and answer is not easy. Greetings from Norwich, UK.
@TheDiddlysquat Thats largely true, but God help those poor buggers that are on the streets tonight. Coldest winter for 30 years and its only 2nd December! Those poor buggers...
digitalbroadcaster. Man I was made homeless last June. It certainly was not by choice. I now spend most of my free time trawling the streets at night trying to find homeless kids and helping them out. There is one kid 17 y.o. who has fallen through the net, who is to blame for that??? Don't judge the homeless till you have been there yourself.
Just wondering how old these pictures are, especially with the homeless girl at 1:17 with the modern car in the background? Some people actually choose to be homeless (to escape societies chains of regulations) but other have no choice. I also know that there are others who beg and are quite wealthy as they see it as a good income (have spare dog, will beg, need new car). However the girl in 1:17 shouldn't even BE homeless! What IS going on with society? I felt so sorry for her. Great song

I know this is a long shot, but when I was about 8 this song was sung to me by a bling man called Paul he was a friend of Evelyn who was looking after me and was in a relationship with my dad called Eric, she used to call him Dick, I would love to hear from anyone who may know where Evelyn or Paul is. this would have been in Upper Norwood (Crystal Palace) Gypsy Hill, London about 1969.

i think anyone who sees a homless guy should think about this song. not all of them were useless, not all of them didnt try.
theres the stockbroker who lost all, clinging to his papers
the womab who lost what they had in diforce, making their way
the veterans, hanging on to what is left of their pride

i know there is lots of sad stories and people in the world. but i think, as a race, looking into the past dosent solve any of the problems we face. instead of feeling sad for the homeless, we should help them (im not complaining about the song, its amazing, but im just saying we need to try to make a difference)

See the thing is about a city, it can the the loneliest place on earth with you have notting or you live a lone.
Like i have siad, too much greed in the world...thats all it is.
tintin20001967 11 months ago
Yes, the world is a hard place all right, but it doesn't have to be this way....it's greed....!!..yer i saw the bag lady he was singing about in the early 70's , has she walked round south ken in London with her life in about ten bags.
What had happend to her and her like, i don't know...she never said notting and may be it is better left that way.
Robert..A london.

@martys1916 Part right!! You should also be ashame on behalf of all the cruel people who abuses animal/cats just as well as the ones who don,t care about other persons!!
The worst beast in the world, is the human. The human rase is the worst animals who ever walk on earth!

It´s not just about homeless...this song can also be understood with empathy to the many victims of mass atrocities and ongoing conflicts.

This song should remind us of our responsibility to protect. Whether it be on a communal, state or global level.

Saw him in the seventieswith my.first boyfriend. This song makes me cry to this day. It broke my heart & so did the boyfriend. But it still makes my heart swell...

this is just such a good song full of meaning. Phil Collins tried the idea with "another day in paradise" which is a good song, but not as good as this.
lord5ugg5 1 year ago
an American guy came n sang this to our school assembly as a child, it made me cry.

Greetings from Norwich, UK.

digitalbroadcaster.

Over 30 years later and this song is still revellent to the state of this good damn country.

Great song
