It's funny to note that had Churchill been alive today and had he been in a position of power after 9/11 he, too, would have argued for preemption as Bush and Blair did regarding Iraq. It was that war which led to Britain creating modern Iraq and to Britain and America becoming allies. Britain needed to attack Iraq in WW1 to win that war. Britain and America had to attack Germany and her allies to win WW2. At the very least WW2 posed some threat to Britain and eventually to America. Iraq never posed a threat to either Britain or America since the 1920's.

I'm not saying that there is no justification for the war, now that it is nearly over I can take a step back and say that there were many tactical advantages for the Iraq war. Threat of force being shown to be true, taking the fight to the terrorists/insurgents, a launching post for other potential invasions, justification of military spending and R&D etc.

The real reason for the war was simple - distraction from domestic problems one of the oldest political tricks in the book. Iraq was a very long way away from getting any WMD tech.
