  • I WOULD BUY THIS

  • James Bond after the Market crash!

  • lame I could get drunker than I am now now and make something for 1/10 the price and in half the time that would smoke that in a time trial and I'm a better rider and I'm 5 10 245, from the fastest fat man

  • good~~~

  • maybe the paddle needs to be more substantial, it looks like just a bar. Also maybe they should be more submerged

  • i think the steering isn´t the most ideal solution....

  • you sir.... are an amazing machinist! will you make me one? XD

  • It would be nice to take this across some real stretches of water like the English Channel or possibly around the world. I would volunteer to test ride it for such a challenge. :) It's been my dream to bike around the world and the only obstacle there is is the sea! Any chance of having something similar available commercially?

  • looks pretty heavy hard to pedle but other then that looks pretty sweet

  • beautifull

  • the cover over the paddles is the best thinking ive seen on any water craft that has them

  • Try flippers instead of paddles! I tried out a canoe in the Lake District once that had pedal driven flippers made out of rubber. They hardly created any drag or splash, and the canoe was faster just pedaling than paddling with the normal canoe paddle. The combination was amazing!

  • that song gets annoing after a wile

  • Nice job guys i would love one of these things,,,

  • This is bad for Southhampton!

  • guys!! thats just awesome!! =D

  • thats cool good job

  • Nice project, not the most efficient for either land or water, but functional for both, thats what matters. Good job. However it does remind me of something Willy Wonk would drive.

    Still good job.

  • it would ahve been cooler if they just threw a bike in the water and called it quits

  • thats a nice simple design and i like the plastic over the rudder so the driver doesnt get wet.

  • thats cool. is it aluminium?

  • @runescapeisawsomeful yes it is

  • Impressive! I already run a Sun recumbent in a town with a river! This thing could be a ball out here!

  • A magnificent piece of work! Well done-a big thumbs up from me :)

  • не ну все условия для изготовления такой бесполезной херни

  • that could prove useful

  • Nice pedalo :)

  • make the boat lighter by using car inner tubing and encase them in a fabric like harness for strength or add wings to the underside of the boat to elevate it and therefore move faster

  • Hope you manage to get it into the market, good luck! 5star!

  • well done peeps

  • I wonder if My design for a human powered houseboat would be a good university project? I made several enclosed HPV campers over the years, so a house boat would be nice-And, I have the design already!

  • I'm guessing it doesn't go up the ramp real well, since if you go forward the floats are lifting the rear wheel and if you go backward the paddles provide insufficient propulsion. And with the ramp covered with slimy algae... I'll bet they had to drag it out with a rope.

  • Although not shown in this video, we were able to cycle out of the water and back onto dry land up a 1-in-5 incline. You can see this in our other video.

  • Awesome stuff, looks like sin, but it works.

  • i like the way the wheel steers on land and in water

  • i'd buy one if i had the money n if u were selling them

  • a program was shown on bbc tv

this was invented yet again by a 70 year old indian lover who had to go across the river to see his girl friend

    another

    INVENTION STOLEN FROM INDIANS

but the invading ALIENS are indians who are already living on other planets

so who needs your poxy controlled world

and also AIR POWERED ENGINES also invented by INDIANS like all the inventions

  • You, sir, should receive an award for crazy stupid shit to say on a Youtube video. And there's a lot of crazy stupid shit being said on Youtube comments.

  • @moghuls Yes, but what about the crazed hateful Hindus? They made a friend of mine move his family, making death threats because he wrote a book about their religion. You need to get over that. The crazy sector of the Hindus is as cutlurally uncivilized as the fatwah Moosilemans, even the abusive Israels with their caged pet people project.

  • Pienso que esta bueno pero se te fue la mano con los materiales, puedes obtener iguales o mejores resultados sin tanto marerial y mecanismos .Good job, but I it took too much stuff to make it and and the performance is not so good .U can yield better results at less costs.

  • Not sure, but it looks like it might be able to cut the grass too!!!!!!!!

  • thats priddy bulky but hay i would definitely buy one

  • well done, nice to see creativity at work

  • Great idea! You could use it to go fishing. I also think this would be useful in cutting across small lakes that have ramps and are close to bikeable streets.

  • That rocks. Purely and simply. Well done, all of you!

  • might be a good idea to put a disengage on the paddle wheel so when the bike is on land, the paddle won't turn but then engage it when in water.

Less moving parts on land equals less power it takes to move bike

  • How about having the peddle wheel and the rear wheels on the same axle? Obviously bigger wheels would be needed at the back to clear the paddle wheel.

  • This would've been great to have while I was cycling along the Danube and some of the bridges were below the water level by more than 1 metre due to the flooding! It would be ideal to have for a round the world trip!

  • Good work. But... ;) The brake is very weak, the front wheel is not loaded. And usual steering is more convinient, IMHO.

  • this is cool, but why did you power it with a water wheel when a propeller is always much more efficient

  • it could be simpliest..isn't it?

  • esta de lolo

  • yeahhh verry nice concept!

  • cool i would ride that to the lake and go fishing all the time you should make a four wheeled two seater one where both people pedal and a little lugage rack on the back for tackle boxes and fishing poles

  • le pueden colocar cambios para que en el agua gire mas rapido y en la tiera que gire otrvez normal

  • not much of a cruzzer or any thing but great idea

XD when i was little i went to bed with enya playing

  • You didn't show coming out of the water... Didn't it work?

  • btw i think that the plastik roll outside of the paddel make drag on land and in water bcus the plastik roll will take alot of the waves that r pushin u forward :D so u arent that smart.

and if u dont want water on u make an block like an spoiler

  • how do you turn it

  • Very cool, doesnt look very fast, but there prob gunna still work on it... i want 1 XD

  • As a hard-working British tax payer it is galling to see students creating real engineering projects, please get back to the bar immediately and do the sex and drugs thing before you all get too old... engineering can wait...

  • super.. !!!. you can more develop this projeckt ..

  • cool but why?

    never seen one mass produced

  • Mass product is not always the answer.

That's why many good and environmentally products didnt reach us, because of that mentallity.

    Sorry mate, think about it.

  • that paddel on the back looks like it makes alot of air drag when its on land....is that a factor?

  • Good question, actually, depending on which way the pedal goes, it increases the speed of the actual cycle, plus they have it covered to keep it from splashing the cyclist. In my opinion, i'd be more worried about the weight. ;-)

  • in a sense it seemed like it would help the paddles pushing and pulling air, like creating a vaccuum almost

  • wouldn't a much smaller underwater propeller be much more efficient? Cool project though

  • Yes, a prop probably would have been a bit more efficient, however, due to the shallow draft of the craft, we opted for a paddlewheel.

If you remember back to when Top Gear first my Amphibous Vehicles, Richard Hammond's prop got snapped off on the slipway, leaving him immobile. We didn't what this same problem.

  • A bit more efficient with a prop! Try a lot more efficient, I hope that you all learned from your mistakes here, sure it floats and drives, buy not well.Did you all get a passing grade? Then again this has never been done, maybe people will build on your platform or idea and improve it.

  • also it is allot more simple to implement a paddle wheel in this drive train as it doesnt require the power to be diverted

  • piecefull song

  • wow that's an awesome bike. i want one too. lol.

  • Anthony Chesshire

    David Edwards

    Simon Halford

    Jo Hutchinson

    Jack Marriott

    Andrew Webster

    and

    Simon Wiles

you guys did an awsome job

  • good job guys

  • it must be costly...

    congrats! good job!

hope santa will give me one for christmas!!! =D

  • what would be better is a partially inflatable float. could even use the same needed gear box to disengage the paddles, have a 3rd gear that pumps air. Also why not use a screw with a fly wheel geared up... I could get a folding bike with an inflatable boat, put it in a back pack and the time i take to blow it up id make up on land and in the water. if u use cncs and tigs, why not make it a practical prototype thats useful in the real world? Foam? u didnt even coat your paddles. engineers.

  • looks like a good bit of fun

  • Fantastic !!!

  • how much did this cost to make ¿? it is a really cool idea you guys are really good engineers

  • I want one.

  • song?

  • Enya - Sail Away

  • what you should do next time is make the paddle drive disengage-able when on land, so you aren't wasting energy spinning both the wheels and the paddle

  • Is it hard to pedal in water? Do you guys get tired easily?

  • eso lo hace un nene de 6 años que pavada

  • great jobb

  • And so, what was it's average speed, both on land and water, please ?

  • Water - 3mph (fast for a human powered water craft)

    Land - over 15mph

  • Nice job on the alum welding. Who in the team went out and trained to do the welding? Not easy stuff on thin gauge alum. Good pre-engineering and conceptual work. Kudos

  • that's so awesome.

you need to make it fly tho ^^

  • i want one now that is awesome next time put a engine it will ware u out like hell

but never mind its still good you can cycle on land and cycle in water (good for the "floods")

  • good job :)

  • for more than 150 years we know now that one needs a propeller (based on archimedes screw) to move efficient and effective on or in the water and you made a paddle-wheel.

Dr A. Bhaskar, Dr S. Syngellakis & Dr K. Djidjelli

wasted a lot of material, money and resources with this useless construction.

  • Dear truthspeaker,

The objective of this project was to produce a product that was able to operate both on land and water effectively, with a smooth transition between the two.

I would be able to supply you with a copy of our dissertation, where we examine many possible propulsion methods. There were many reasons why we made the design decisions we did.

Our supervisors did not spend any money. We did.

Its great fun to ride, and Im not going to let you have a go.

    Team Amphibious Cycle

  • Well put. Besides, one of your most impressive accomplishments is that you made all the components. A propeller would not be something you could make. The fun factor is important as is the distressing of the sound of a low speed wheel vs a high speed prop.

  • well, a prop, underwater, at the speed you could get with people-power wont have any cavitation. Also, if they have CNC machines and tig welders, and all that money to buy the aluminum for the frame then I bet they could get their hands on a 4 inch long piece of 6 inch billet. mill it, and then they'd have a prop. hell, a perfect prop for their application too. and it would be completely silent, even more so than say a trolling motor, which is imperceptibly quiet.

  • Unless the prop is detachable one could easily run the risk of hitting it while on the ground. If it is detachable, then it wouldn't have a smooth transition between water and land.

  • What caused you to opt out of a propeller design. I find that the paddle wheels on the oakwood pedal boats are efficient at low speed, but you pedal fast and the boat doesn't pick up much speed (it actually slows down for some reason!!). Was there a gear problem associated with the propeller i.e the difficulty of using orthogonal gearing as opposed to a simple chain drive, or was it buoyancy problems, or even the difficulty in making the propeller part perhaps.

  • Jealousy is obvious in this one.

  • nice idea

  • we love you dave...

  • muy bueno chicos los felicito saludos a todos desde argentina aguanten los deportes náuticos

  • Very cool!

  • awesome well crafted machine!

  • great work guys looks awesome

it has been proven that propellers are more effective then the rollers. Why did you chose the rollers???

  • Wow... looks like hard work I think! Niche one

  • thats an nice project/idear...

  • cazzo....bella!!!!! complimenti!!!!

  • That's brilliant :]

and i dunno if you worked it out before hand or anything, but it would have been interesting to see a weight test.

  • Good ideas & Excellent Work!

If want, you can look into my page...

    Thanks

  • This bicycle that goes for any type of area is a good idea to give you a few good walks along water and land during the all year.Very pretty.

  • gracias por su comentario

  • Que trabuco mas guapo

  • apesadumbrado, no entiendo

  • what is the name of the music ??? please

  • Enya - Sail Away

  • well done,brilliant.

  • That's a very impressive machine! I love seeing the ingenuity of people.

  • I would say if you're going to use the front wheel as a rudder, you would need trim tanks to drop the front wheel down a bit...which would lead to some sort of pressurized tanks to blow the ballest out once you make landfall.

    Otherwise...job truly well done.

  • Nice idea, it does worry me a little that it may be a sightly complicated solution to a problem that doesn't exist. But thanks for you comment all the same.

  • A problem that doesn't exist? With the proper modifications this could be a nice touring machine with the ability to "dive in" for fishing while providing a nice workout!

  • Excellent work.

  • Well sorry I missed...but it looks awesome!! Go SOTON

  • Excellent work!

Thanks to your work,I am now feeling so exceting that I can have a chance to study in soton`s SES for a Msc degree.

  • Superb engineering!

  • Thanks!

There are some links to detailed images in 'More info'.

  • Excellent work!

Thanks to your work,I am now feeling so exceting that I can have a chance to study in soton`s SES for a Msc degree.

  • Excellent Video. Excellent work.

Did you modify the three speed hub to include a reverse. Did you manufacture your own hub? I'm a bicycle mechanic and have never seen such a hub with a reverse gear.

For on land, what type of brakes do you use?

It looks very sea worthy. I live on an Island 7 miles from the mainland so such a craft brings ideas to mind.

  • Many thanks for your comments.

The hub gear is a special sturmey archer component that is intended for pedal go-carts. It has 3 speed forward, freewheel and reverse, which is most important when on the water.

On land, V-brakes are used on the front wheel as on a standard upright bicycle.

    7 miles? I hope you're not in a rush!

  • How about using oars in tandem with the pedal wheel for more speed?
