It's not noisy at all, but that depends on the hard drive you're using.

What times do you get in QuickBench with say a X-25M over eSata or FW800 on it?

It's not a benchmarked test, but i have one plugged into the firewire 800 port on my iMac. I was able to copy 60 gigs of video files from my Mac's internal drive to a Seagate drive in just under 30 minutes.
