i was really excited when you said this lens is perfect for the low-life photographer (hey, that's me!!), but then i figured out you were saying low-LIGHT photographer :(.
@QQQQcon I have just bought a D7000 and I have a 18-200mm Vr but I cant decide on other lenses to buy for it. Can you advise me please? I may do for the D700 in the future and that way I am so confused about lenses. :)
@pjos111 if you are getting a D700 (FX) get the 14-24mm hands down... but you can't go wrong getting the DX 11-16mm Tokina lens it's not overly expensive and works amazing on the D7000(DX). Those are the only two SWA I'll vouch for right now but I do hear the new sigma DX 8-16mm is nice and sharp, but has quirks like reverse manual focus and slow AF etc... I haven't tried the 8-16mm at all, but I might snag one up for the fun still. 8mm on DX is insane
@TheWooYou Jesus Christ... I KNOW! I OWN THE FUCKING LENS LOL. I know the lens doesn't physically change when attatched to a DX camera (any nikon camera other that the D3 series and d700) I'm not a retard. Stop stating the obvious when it's OBVIOUS what I mean. The lens simply cannot be used for what it's intended (14-24mm) unless its used with the D3, D3s, D3x or D700. Any other Nikon camera and it's 21-36mm.
@TheWooYou You just said I was right and wrong in the same comment... What the hell are you banging on about??? when used with a DX camera the lens doesn't produce a 14-24mm range. It produces a 21-36mm range. Thus rendering it fairly pointless on a DX camera because you could get a DX equivilent and spend MUCH less. I use a FX (full frame) camera and so when I use this lens it gives me 14-24mm
@bronze5420 because the 14mm is not that great when it comes to sharpness, especially at large f stops. nikons lens technology has greatly improved since the era of prime lenses,
@FinlandApollo I agree , hood or not hood , it actually doesn't make a difference , but using the hood do help to minimise the stray light going through the lens..
I don't use the caps on any of my lenses, I use pro lenses who are sealed, I'm just very carefull how I use it and I never had any scratches or dusts.
Of course, I'm someone very carfull and I if you feel that you could miss handeling your lenses, it's better for you to use the caps and the poutches.
Has anyone used an adapter ring for this lens mounting on a Canon Mark II? If so what brand of adaptor did you use and what functions were lost when using the adaptor?
I've seen an adaptor from the 16-9 site and was wondering if perhaps anyone has tried this particular adaptor ring for this lens on a Canon.
At least one person mentioned filters with this lens. This lens does NOT facilitate the use of filters. No jels, no front filter. No nothing. If you want to use filters on a professional grade nikon wide angle lens, then you have to use a 17-35 f/2.8 or the newer (and slower) wide angle VR nikon lens. IQ wise, the 14-24 is about the best in the business for wide angle lenses.
@likeawhispr It IS THE BEST, Canon doesn't even get close on this one.
And thanks for the review, is really helful see the actual size of this thing. Just one minor suggestion, would be good to include the whole nomenclature of the lens, at least the aperture f/2.8 =) Thanks!!
Hey Conor, Good review here. I've one of these which I use on a D700,amazing quality, but you have to watch the flare especially doing night shots. One thing I would add it actually is good value if you think of it as 3 prime lenses! One warning don't pick it up by the lens cap-it will fall out and watching a lens like this falling to the floor is not fun!
I`ve found flare occur LESS when the sun is towards the centre of the shot, and are more frequent when the sun is just out of shot. Flare hasn`t proven to be as great a problem as I anticipated with this lens (considering it cannot take a filter)
I never ever bother with grads etc anyway. I sold my collection a long time ago and upped my digital skills. Exposure blending is the way to go. As for filters for protecting glass. Well thats what insurance is for. I never ever put any glass infront of my lenses as 'protection' I just take care of my lenses and clean them after usage if needed.
no good for landscapes as you cant put filters on the front for 30 second exposures for example. AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED is a great lens
hah true about ppl going on youtube for lens advice, but the tamron 10-24 f3.5-4.5 is an excellent lens. i have it and love it. i tried the 10-24 nikkor lens and found it had much more barrel distortion than the tamron. The nikkor is also way more expensive. the tamron's about $450, and the nikkor is $800
Put this Nikon 14-24mm G lens on a Canon 5D mk2 body and you have a combo so sharp it'd easy to cut your fingers.
Before anyone says you can't use this lens on a canon body. Wrong! you can get a Nikon G to Canon adaptor. Even with the adaptor you get manual aperture control and autofocus confirmation too!
i have compare how does the sharpness on both nikon d700 and eos 5d mk2, just use this on nikon, you will get brighter and loveable color than the eos done..
I've tested and owned both. I sold my D700, the 14-24 is an amazing lens on Nikon i agree but i loved it far more on the 5D mk2, the resolution is out of this world. Also the 1080p video of the 5D mk2 is what swayed it for me. After all is said and done, its what you want out of your kit, this is my opinion based on what my finding were. I only ever shoot landscape, i want large high res prints. and i like video. The 5d mk2 wins in so many other factors which i don't have space to go over here.
Well the only problem you are faced with in deciding which body to use is that if you chose a 5D mk2 to use with this lens you'd have to buy the Nikon G adaptor which costs over £200 alone and has a pretty long waiting list for them to be made. Sometimes 5-6 months wait. My advice to you would be to go to a shop and take a look at both bodies. Personally i prefer the 5D mk2 over ANY Nikon (full frame or other) body. 21 mp, full frame, 1080p video(which is truely awesome when you get used to it
i say go for the D700. although it is a lower megapixel camera and doesnt do video, i think it will satisfy you much more. It has considerably better noise performance, averaging about 2 stops better than the Canon. Video is something i personally dont want on my cameras. video is a gimmick. if you want video just get a video camera. and the 12 MP on the nikon is enough for most people. if you need bigger prints then just use genuine fractals to enlarge it.
Booyaaa, video is a "gimmick" to you because you don't have a use for it in a DSLR. Other professional photographers do. There are many business uses for high quality video, that don't warrant the use of a vid camera being lugged around. Snippets of HD vid to advertise your business on the web and cell phones is just one popular example.
Yeah... thats what I meant. just thought it was important and I thought I'd mention it. I don't remember if you mentioned it or not in the vid :) like the vids btw
That's a big no-no. Either you'll lose a BIG chunk of megapixels when the camera identifies you're using an fx lens, or you'll get a circular image on a square frame with BIG black areas around the picture if you override the DX crop...
hey, i know you dont do macro photography much, but i have a question. would a DX body help me get clser to the subjects than a full frame SLR? which is better? thanks!
hey i'm ed. i'm an avid fan of nikon. right now i'm using d60, but i want to upgrade it to d3. do you think d3 is better than d700. can u advice me what kind of model to choose between d3 to d700. thanks to you.
assuming from the D60 you are not using the camera for work, so I suggest you upgrade to D90 or D300 first. The D3 is a heavy and big pig, which will be a burden if you play tourist. Not to mention that you'll be robbed in an instant, if you walk around with a 5000$ piece of hardware.
@blacklotus143 yes i would recommend the d700 and if you want it to be like a d3 just get a battery grip (which will also get you 8fps instead of 5fps)
What 24-120? AF-S VR or AF-D? If you have the AF-S VR version, you also need MUCH better standard lens, because the 24-120/3.5-5.6 AF-S VR one of the worst Nikkor lenses ever made...
even the older AF-D version does better job... it does have more noisy and slower AF, it doesn't have VR - image stabilization... but it have completely different glass quality.
well then buy the 10-24mm is much better cause of the 2mm more at the wide angle.. and that s MUCH...! PS: it s also cheaper... in germany you will get the 10-24 for about 900€-1000€ and the 12-24 about 1300€
Great review, mate. I've been looking at lenses for the past 9 months trying to make a decision and you covered all the bases in ten minutes. Nice work. Cheers.
I also have a D60, looking for something ultra-wide. This is an excellent review, the most information I was able to find anywhere. I was also shocked to see how honking huge this lens is. I think you saved me a bundle of money by directing me to the 12-24. Thanks!
thanks alot man for the review, i have a D60 Nikon, and just want to reconfirm, you recommend 12-24 instead of this 14-24 on my D60 Nikon, right? Thanks alot.
Its tough selling pictures. Its best to start with friends who would be interested in buying. The best way to make money is to try submitting to local galleries or submit to photo contests, but your pictures have to be very good.
Dont try to make a living off it or even extra money unless your sure your up for the challenge of making those perfect images and you actually have the equipment for the job...
**** NIKON BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE ****
My Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 is back focusing at 14mm (I can’t use AF fine tune because it make the lens blury at 24mm).
I called NIKON, they said: “it happen sometimes”, and asked me to send the lens for repair.
It will cost me $60 for the shipping+insurance ($2000 lens)
Nikon does NOT want to pay for the shipping & insurance.
Why shoud I pay $60 because NIKON did not check the lens before selling it ?
Do you think that is a great customer service ?

What 24-120? AF-S VR or AF-D? If you have the AF-S VR version, you also need MUCH better standard lens, because the 24-120/3.5-5.6 AF-S VR one of the worst Nikkor lenses ever made...
even the older AF-D version does better job... it does have more noisy and slower AF, it doesn't have VR - image stabilization... but it have completely different glass quality.

hey i'm also a part time photagrapher who wants to make sum money on the side. who can i sell my pix too?

Its tough selling pictures. Its best to start with friends who would be interested in buying. The best way to make money is to try submitting to local galleries or submit to photo contests, but your pictures have to be very good.

I take pictures as a hobby ! Taking perfect pictures and satisfying all the customers would be a little tough. Great video !

Dont try to make a living off it or even extra money unless your sure your up for the challenge of making those perfect images and you actually have the equipment for the job...
