  • Changing an engine is two minutes? Come on kilmer, we need more detail.

  • @77raymondt this is an overall view on the job. An actual engine replacement full video would be LONG and boring and not fit on youtube.

  • you're the greatest shade tree mechanic in north america

  • Need some legal work after changing the engine to be street legal or you can use as is.

Here you need tons of paperwork when you change the engine ... it's a real pain ...

  • What was wrong with the engine that it needed replacing?

  • @mds2465 the car's previous owner was 17 and overheated it by not replacing a worn water pump. so the head had a small crack, it ran ok, but would use coolant through the crack.

  • lol how to change an engine.. sounds a little too simple to be true...

  • @sranjesuper this is a brief synopsis of replacing an engine. No one would watch an entire engine replacement video, it would be hours long and boring as hell.

  • @scottykilmer How to perform a heart transplant,FIRST TAKE THE HEART OUT AND THEN...OH BY THE WAY YOU CAN BUY THESE GREAT TONGUES TO TAKE THE HEART OUT AT WALMART FOR 9.99.THEY ARE GREAT....OH PUT THE NEW HEART BACK IN.i HOPE THIS WAS INFORMATIVE SURGEONS USE MY VIDEOS AS REFRESHERS BEFORE SURGERY SO I KNOW IT IS GOOD STUFF.thanks for watching next week tune in to see how to perform a pace maker insertion.

  • @jdochstader har de har har. This is a synopsis of the job, just to show people it can be done by anyone with patience and an engine puller.

  • I wonder why ppl coming asking how to change an engine when they don't seem to have nay clue about how cars work or what parts are inside. Start with basic things, don't go straight to difficult and longer projects.

  • do you need to change ECU too if replacing 1000 cc engine with 1400 cc in seat ibiza 2001

  • Excellent videos..keep it up!

  • how do you change an engine in a 2001 honda accord lx?

  • @SkinnyManChris the same as this video, just pray it's not a 6, cause they are much harder and heavier.

  • Hi Scotty. Would a toyota engine (4afe), just slide in and out of the transmission as well ? Or are there some ?

  • @BADtimmay same process, but they don't just slide in, you have to wiggle the hell out of them.

  • would it be possible to swap a diesel engine for a gas one? also could I put a bigger engine in or would it not fit?

    Thanks, great videos!

  • @alistairstuart2009 anything's possible, but diesel swap would be insanely complex.. Same thing with a bigger engine, it would be complex and require a new transmission and tons of other stuff.

  • he made this look so simple..

  • Do you work on Diesel engines as well?

  • @suddnstar a little here and there. Not a big fan, they smell.

  • Scottty!! Hey, i have a 2002 Impreza at the moment it has a EJ16 is it possible to have the STi's motor (EJ207) fit in with little problem? Since it is the same type of engine and has a similar body.. but I am worried with the .4 increase in displacement and the turbocharger.. any sort of information would suffice.. Thanks in advance

  • @Rebo8221 I NEVER swap different year engines, often too many incompatabilites. Ask some junk yards, they do that all the time and would know

  • What year is your sons celica and how much did you get the motor for?

  • @mds2465 93 celica, 550 for the motor.

  • what chain do you use from the hook from the hoist to the engine. I know a chain but what is the one you use for that job called?

  • @Donmega884 It's a leveling chain assembly, cost 50 bucks at harbor freight tools.

  • Hey Scotty just wondering how many miles did this Toyota had when engine failed?

  • @PeterGriffin4200 160 thousand miles, but it only failed cause the previous owner was a teenager who drove it a year with a leaking water pump. So the head had minor cracks in it, though it ran OK, it used water.

  • @scottykilmer Scotty, I want to ask. I want to get audi 200 but sadly it doesn't have diesel engine. So i'm thinking is it worth to get one, and swap with audi a6 or audi 100 c4 diesel engine? or just better and cheaper to get a6 with diesel engine.

  • @scottykilmer wait ..I thought that Steel seal fixed those problems

  • Never buy anything from Engine and Transmission World. Google "Engine and Transmission World reviews, complaints, scam". Do your research before you buy any used motor or transmission. EATW is a criminal enterprise. Beware !!!

  • hi scotty is true that changing the engine in my 99 nissan altima I have to remove the transmission? tank you

  • @u22miguel you have to disconnect it as I do in this video, but many guys pull the engine and tranny as a unit when doing it. But, that requires a much stronger engine hoist than the one I used in the video.

  • Hey Scotty you made this look so easy, but it seems difficult and it must of took hours to replace the engine and put a new engine in.

  • @HonnNeey92 of course, this is just a summary, showing that people can do it if they buy a low priced engine hoist.

  • This Video Is GREAT!

  • Hello Scotty and thank you. Where should I purchase my engines?

  • @arielban1 I google each one I do and make phone calls.

  • Is that your Celica Scott?

  • @w00tplayaw00t my sons

  • @scottykilmer did you rebuilt the engine or replace it?

btw how do i know whats the correct piston ring size for a car? any special tool?

  • I love your videos but you'd rather suggest us to pay the thousand dollars to have it replaced instead of paying /ike 200 bucks for the lift and replacing it on our own? I mean obv ud want a pro do it, but I don't get why'd you say that if your showing us to how to it.(I've been watchinh your videos and your a smart man and very realiable I just don't get what the point was when you said it) I sounded really dumb lol

  • hello scotty, i just bought a mk3 1992 toyota supra (no engine or transmission) im going to drop in a 2jz-gte into it, know any good websites that i could use for as a guide for the process?

  • @shizzel122 no off hand, just google it.

  • scotty, tanks for the videos are great

  • harbor freight tools rocks

  • Its that easy huh? So you just pull the old one out and put the new one in? Done. And here i was thinking there was more to it

  • @driftartist uh if you have an engine hoist yes, you dont want to attempt a engine removal with all the shit attached to it lmao. he was just showing how to do a engine pull with a engine hoist not how to dismantle everything for a engine pull

  • your cool ,your videos are cool, and long may you live merry christmas from a very windy northern scotland

  • Why would u change a toyota engine lol

  • I wish I was brave enough to take on this type of a project. You should make a 'how to turbo charge your car' video. Your videos are great and I have saved a lot of money because of them.

  • scotty!! they say it could be my head gasket or just a piston ring. 0 compression on #2 and dip stick comes out oil everywere

  • @rockford13power could be either, you won't know without taking it apart.

  • It's a shame my dad's had the head rebuilt on my '87 Corolla twice more than what it would have costed to throw in a modern fuel injected engine. The first rebuild wasn't even done properly.

  • Hey Scotty! i just suscribed! i was wondering, I have a 1990 civic dx and i was gonna replace the existing engine on but the only thing that stops me is what happens if the transmission doesnt line up or something? is there anything special you gotta do when you connect the transmission or do you just put it on until it fits? any aligning? or what not. Thank You Scotty

    -Danny

  • @jafalafa12 lining up the tranny is the hardest part, many guys pull the engine and tranny as a unit, then take em apart and put the tranny on the new engine on the ground, and install it back whole.

  • @scottykilmer Thank you Scotty! Imma go get me that cherry picker from harbor freight now

  • Got an old engine you wanna sell?

  • Hello Scotty, I have just replaced an engine on a 1998 Honda Accord EX coupe and

just noticed that my transmission slips especially after about half hour stop-and-go drive. What could I have done wrong? I didn't notice that with an old engine.

  • @darayeth probably cause your old engine was worn out and the new one has more power, that makes em slip. time for a new tranny now, or drive slower. scotty

  • scott your the man and thanks for the great videos keep them comming i can watch them over and over..!

  • Thanks again Scotty,. Keep those vids acoming.

  • That looks easy but when you do the job is not that easy...

  • @jonathan99786 Yes, but it sure looks good my way. Actually took me about 4 hours to do the whole job. Scotty

  • that's a great skill Scotty

  • scotty how long did it take for u to do that swap? i had to do a swap and it took almost 2 weeks!

  • @smitty6293 I'd say about 4 hours total. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer oh woww, well then again i was swaping a motor alot bigger than that one. and it was my first swap ever. i just turned 18 nd i had acouple friends help along the way.

  • @scottykilmer "4 hours total" with car experience. Because without experience, you could spend 1 hour just remove one car part.

I'm not telling you what to do, but can you make your videos a little longer and little more info.

  • Comment removed

  • @hom2fu Hey, this video shows that anyone willing to spend a little on an engine hoist can do this job. Of course it takes hours to do, but that would be boring as hell and no one would watch it, Plus it wouldn't fit youtube format for time. Scotty

  • Comment removed

  • hi scotty

when u replace a blown engine,do you have to take off the ac compressor ? do u have to take off the gas then refill it with gas again ? do i need to change the alternator+compressor+steering pump ?

  • @lowlow643 Of course you swap all the parts off, but the gas is still in the tank and when you connect the fuel lines back to the new engine, the pump will pump it in. Scotty

  • That easy. Right

  • While I'm sure this video is appreciated and it is fun to watch, if someone doesn't know how to swap an engine and is referring to a video, they shouldn't even bother, lol, they'd do more harm than good most likely.

  • @rizrz34 Ah, another whiner. I made this to show people that they can swap an engine with very little in expenses as that engine hoist cost me just a tad over a hundred bucks. and you should see some of the manuals on changing engines, "remove old engine and put new engine in" is about all some give. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Haha, you assume that anyone that anyone that says anything that could be bad towards your video is a whiner? I appreciate the video, and yes you got that engine hoist for a steal.. I'm just saying, this isn't for a novice.

  • @TheBenz1881 If I ever get one again, not too many left these days. Scotty

  • Your videos are great but too quick I want at least some thing that last 8 mins instead of 2 mins.... and Some people swap a engine by jacking the car real high and pull it out from the bottom if they really want to save money...

  • @898944 Ah, you know how high you'd have to jack it up to pull an engine? Only a lift set up could do that, and most guys don't have one in their driveway. Scotty

  • Is that the 1 ton or 2 ton hoist from harbor freight? I've read that the 1 ton doesn't have enough reach for engine swaps unless the car is really small.

  • @FrancisTheGook it's the 2 ton, but I generally only mess with small engines. Scotty

  • Hey Scotty, I'm wondering if you could shed a little light on the slight amount of drag concept as far as adjusting valves on an 04 V6 Accord? Thanks

  • @PVoyager the feeler gauge should slip under the rocker with a small amount of resistance, not tight, but not completely loose either with no tension slowing it down. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer When buying a used car, what are the basic tests that a mechanic will do on the car to tell me if the car is a reliable source of transportation or not?

  • @99ambition road testing, compression testing, computer testing with a dealer level scan tool and eyeballing for wreck damage. Scotty

  • man u made this look easy lol

  • Scotty, What are some of the best ways to increase horsepower in an engine without doing things that could possibly damage it?

  • @99ambition there are none, increase in power stresses engines, period. Turbo chargers and superchargers work best, but they basically increase the engine compression pressure, stressing the engine more. And they are Super expensive to add one. Scotty

  • @99ambition You could do a K and N intake. Its easy to install and its free flowing, which increasing your gas mileage with HP. Also you never would have to change it again. I have one and have been using it for thousands of miles and it never posed an issue.

  • That's a pretty nice looking 5th gen Celica. You shoulda put a 3S-GTE in it since you were doing a swap anyway, the wiring work isn't difficult enough to make it too much of a hassle ;)

  • Scotty, i'm very eager to learn how to work on cars. So for starters, what are some of the easiest cars to learn how to work on?

  • @99ambition older cars, any older car. Of course I'm talking sixties here. If you want more modern, get an early 90s toyota. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Do any cars from the sixties or early 70's have any type of computer at all?

  • Scotty, when buying an engine, whether it be used, remanufactured, or brand new, what exactly is supposed to come with an engine assembly? the reason I ask you this is because I know alot of companies will try to cheat people out of parts.

  • @99ambition generally they come with nothing but the engine block and heads, you reuse everything else. If it's used from a junk yard, it has many more parts on it and is much easier to install, like this one. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Do you know of any instruction videos that could teach me how to completely restore a 1967 chevrolet camaro? Also, Is anything computerized in this specific car? Oh, and how much would an average mechanic charge to fully restore everything under the hood with brand new parts and labor?

  • @99ambition it would cost a ton to restore it, restoration work done right is a rich man's game. Just google it to see if anyone has made videos, I would imagine they're some out there. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Scotty, maybe you have been busy or maybe my last question somehow did not get sent to you.I am not a mechanical expert which is why I ask you questions. I had asked you if there were any vehicles in the 60's or early 70's that had any type of computer in them at all. If you would, please get back to me on this question whenever you can.

  • @99ambition sixties only use small modules to run ignition systems (they called them "black boxes" back then.) Seventies stated using more computers on AC systems and early fuel injection and ignition systems. Scotty

  • Ummm... some of your videos I've found to be quite helpful and practical, but this one feels like a joke. "So, kids, here's how to change the ENGINE in your car": ...thanks, I guess.

  • @Commando303X what a Whiner. Basically,I'm showing people how they can change an engine themselves with just a 100 dollar engine puller from harbor freight tools. If you think that's a joke, then the laugh's on you. Scotty

  • Scotty, I appreciate all of the time and effort you put in to helping people with your mechanical knowledge. It makes me angry when people disrespect you with negative comments. you could be doing other things with your time but you choose to help people and I thank you for that. When buying a used car, what are the most important things to look and check for to make sure i'm not buying a piece of junk lemon car?

  • @99ambition take it for a road test, both city and highway and see how it feels and shifts and brakes and corners. If that's fine, then pay a mechanic to do a final check, that's the best test of all. we mechanics can tell in half an hour just about everything. Scotty

  • It's that easy? Just make sure you hook up all the other stuff right.... I'm sure hooking up the other stuff is the hard part

  • @disnukka79 No, it's not That easy, this is a summary just to show people they can do it with minimal equipment of a 100 dollar engine puller and patience. Scotty

  • Can u make a vid of transmission stuff thanks scotty

  • wow, im eager to learn. i have a 2002 toy.celica wich is a 4cyl. 1.8ltr front wheel drive automatic.. where can/should i buy tools to work on my car?

  • ..and POOF, 2 minutes later, a new engine :D

  • @scotty are rotary engines faster the the usual ones? I hear they have less torque

  • @ismaels91 less torque, more horsepower for their tiny size. Scotty

  • I like the engine leveler you have there, never seen that before. Normally I just bolt on a chain to the heads and adjust it by choosing which link I want to lift with the cherry picker. Wiggling and wrestling the engine in while using a pry bar makes it a real bitch to hook it up to the transmission.

  • im gonna try to swap my engine in 2.11 min :)

  • Comment removed

  • @djbazzmaster faster than changing your OIL.lol

  • Comment removed

  • Why did this engine in particular need replacing? Something must have been really wrong with it.

  • lol..looks like you worked up a sweat on that replacing an engine vid,but love your videos,,keep it up,

  • U make everything look so easy! I could have sworn the Alternator & the Tranny came with the new engine? DUH@Me! Tee Hee!

I see Texas Plates, no wonder U have that Huge Fan blowing on U outside! Its hotter than a heifer on fire down there! *LOL*

  • yOU ARE THE king OF DRIVEWAY MECHANICS....LOVE YOUR VIDS...

  • Scotty If I was to change an engine on a car with a electronic mileage gauge, would the miles displayed read the same after the engine swap. Or, does the engine somehow store that information inside the engine? Or, am I gonna have to change the mileage on the new engine to display the same miles as the blown one?

  • @moofushu you can't change the mileage, it will stay what the computer of the car says, has nothing to do with the engine. scotty

  • Most of your videos are to abbreviated to be much of a use to anyone.

  • @modwickman what a complainer. Gee, over 5 million people have watched them so far. Go soak your head and read War and Peace if you want something long. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer ...Over 5 million people have watched your videos because they don't know any better.

  • @modwickman If you need someone to hold your hand every step of the way then you need to hire a mechanic. You need to be able to problem solve and think for yourself. no repair manual tells you every little detail you need to know to do a particular job.

  • Probably should've mentioned to make sure the engine mounts match up. ^_^

  • 101st airborne division i say hooah

  • @toyota4life94 1st you cannot shange the mileage it is against the law (TIMA of '86). Second while most clusters even digital store the mileage in the cluster and will usually display the mileage on the cluster some cars must match the pass key to the cluster or the car will not start. Some cars need to have the proper cluster programming for steering wheel controls to work. And in many cars the mileage is stored in the cluster, PCM and BCM so a tech with a pro scanner can see true mileage.

  • Looks like you swapped the engine in your celica, how many miles did you get out of the original?

  • @PUREAAMERICAN it was a 900 dollar used car that the last owner, a kid, drive into the ground and cracked the head from overheating. But it ran 2 years with the cracked head, I just got tired of adding water (it ran fine otherwise.) So I put the used japanese engine in. It had 160 thousand miles on the original. Scotty

  • @toyota4life94 depends on the car. most will read the same as the info is on the main computer. Scotty

  • @toyota4life94 you can't, you just write it down on a piece of paper and put it in the glove box so you remember. Scotty

  • Lol have the same hoist, bit short for a 95 cutlass so had to make a extension with a chain come along

  • thank you scotty

  • Ever buy an engine from got engines.com?

  • @Davaith couple hundred thousand, but that aint much. The previous owner left a leaking water pump in so the head had minor cracks in it. scotty

  • @scottykilmer so you have bought from this site?

  • @Davaith No, I haven't ever bought from them. Scotty

  • Hey Scotty, you said one part that was difficult was lining up the engine with the trans. What do you think about removing the trans along with the engine, instead of just the engine?? This way will save you the trouble of removing the trans bolts while in the car, removing the clutch disc bolts while in the car, and then lining up and installing all of those bolts while in the car. It would be a lot easier to do that with the engine and trans out. I plan to R&R my clutch this way on a Corolla.

  • @CoolasIce2 Continued...Scotty you have to remove the 1/2 shafts, etc... anyways, so I'm thinking that the additional parts that need to be disconnected like the shift cables, clutch hydraulic line, speedo cable, etc... wont be much at all compared to the ease at which the trans bolts, etc... will be. What ya think? thanks.

  • @CoolasIce2 You can do that, but of course it weighs a lot more and you need to be really careful with the jack. Scotty

  • What caused replacement of the engine in the Toyota? Did it have alot of miles?

  • Thanks for sharing.Love the videos.Added to my favorites.Tec

  • scotty i am getting a "Service Traction System" Message and the TRAC OFF and ABS Light are lit on our 2001 Impala what do i need to look at and where do i even start?

  • @Matthew55904 the ABS and trac system work together, so when one light goes on, the other soon follows. BUT, you need a dealer level scan tool to analyze those complex systems. If you don't want to spend that kind of money, ignore it, as it's a fail safe system and would revert to non trac, non abs normal driving. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer it is my grandpas car when i told him it needs fixing all he said was "if u crash ou crash" this wont happen from the problem will it?

  • @Matthew55904 No, it just won't have traction control or ABS brakes. Just normal old fashioned brakes. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer i think it could be a sensor where are the traction control sensors?

  • a good bit of tinkering there scotty, to get the donkey out, the way we do it is,we take out the whole lot , engine and tranmission, in one piece build it on the ground, and slap the whole lot back in, ,saves a bunch of time, good vid there buddy, all the same,

  • It's summer time -- how about a coolant flush video? Thanks SK!

  • it literally only took him 2:11 to do this

  • @fonzi1938 that was a good time,

  • @tstimevato thanks.. for the tip. had that in mind since the first thing i ever did on a car myself was a tune up. had the issue when i got the car out of the junk yard. lol. @scottykilmer thanks for the advice... do you have a video on replacing the fuel pump or filter? i learn better watching hands on with videos. dont know how to change or even know where the fuel filter goes..

  • @DrAgOnAnGeL7 most fuel pumps AND filters in modern cars are inside the gas tank. Next time I do one, I'll film it. Scotty

  • This is way too short Scotty, shoulda explain things like draining the fluids, harness, all hoses, injectors , timing, valve adjustment and other things involved in this operation.

  • @guayacan07 I've already explained why I made the video the way I did, it's an example to show people they can do that job with inexpensive equipment. Scotty

  • Should had one of these thrown in my Corolla instead of having the gutless carborated one rebuilt. The guy my dad talked to said it would have only been $600 (labor + engine).

  • 11,000 Subscribers!!! Congratulations Scotty!!

  • Sounds like there are more steps to replace and engine. But a good intro.

  • lol, I can see how you like to keep the videos short and sweet, but this video is like a surgeon saying "first you open the chest, pull the heart out, and put the new one in, and don't forget to connect everything!" But again, I see why. Lot of things you have to disconnect, etc. hell of a job. Just a tad funny is all

  • @sacr3 Yes, I already talked about this if you bothered to read the comments below I'm showing people they can do the job themselves with relatively inexpensive tools . Scotty

  • You should also put oil in the new engine lol
