this is the album version, of course. don't people have ears? doh. in moments of madness, you might think - this is the greatest rock and roll song ever. as in, ever. certainly the kinkiest. better than bowie. better than anyone. the final guitar solo is unsurpassed.
Nope nothing like this by Vanilla Fudge, did a search & came back to let you know. Hmmm, now I'm going to go nuts until I find out why this song is missing key components!
"The title might lead the listener to expect a salacious opus but the lyrics are actually concern themselves with the rise of rock & roll and how the radio played a key role in this popularity. Of course, the songwriters in Blue Öyster Cult put these ideas forth in an obtuse fashion, using intriguing wordplay like 'Kingdoms of the radio, 45 rpm/Too much revolution.' "
This doesn't sound the same as the LP, or the live concert version I saw, where the chorus was Dominance, Submission! Several times. This is faster & higher toned than the D&S I remember them doing. Am I thinking of someone else doing BOC better--I doubt anyone can do BOC that good, so what the hell? Anyone else know what I'm talking about?
@gmj2012 Maybe I do. I think I heard a copy of this done live by Vanilla Fudge a long time ago. My recollection was the chorus carried on longer in that version.
@fatfrog007 Yeah maybe I should do a search, but I have this album, and it IS different, does say the D&S lyrics, the radio version especially. I'm not sure what the source is for this video? I know I've never heard a version by Vanilla Fudge though I have heard plenty by VF, not this done by them. Another music puzzle to figure out, what fun :-)
@gmj2012 This is the original version sung by Al. Ever since I've seen them dating back to the 70s, Eric sang the lead with Al accompanying. Why? You'll have to ask the Cult....
Probably my favourite BÖC song... (I may change my mind tomorrow, there are so many great BÖC tunes!) They were my first concert ever back in 1975... Saw them many times since then... Love the Cult!
Actually, it was uncool to "sell out" to radio in those days. Programmers understood it, but the pure bands wouldn't kiss their corporate asses. Bands that sold out were considered Top 40 or Bubblegum. Bands with integrity made their money selling concert tickets and albums, not radio promotion.
Saw them at Manchester Free Trade Hall in November 75,,,,,Birth Control were the support band.
The Cult opened with Stairway to the Stars..they were just incredible..Buck was blasting riffs everywhere,,,Eric was leering in shades....I seem to remember flames shooting off his fingers during Flaming Telepaths.
They were touring On Your Feet or On Your Knees at that time..caught them at De Montford hall in 78 and back at Manchester Apollo touring the Mirrors album.
I saw EVERY band live in the 70's. BOC three times. The two best stage performing bands I saw were these guys and Black Sabbath with Ozzie. You left the show in a daze and talked for days about it. Even KISS (which was pretty damn good) didn't match up.
After wading through half of it, Buck Dharma walked up front, cracked his knuckles, and went off on a killer riff. He had this hot, cherry red guitar. He smiled and pulled the guitar quickly across the front of his body and TRAILLLLLSSSS of the bloddy red guitar pulsed in front of him. The crowd roared. Totally awesome trip. BOC is the absolute best R&R band in concert.
Saw these guys the first time in Offenbach, Germany in 1978 when I was in the Army. They were doing the Spectres tour. Back then and the sound was absolutely bone crushing sitting in the 5th row (right in the middle) while dosing on purple micro dot. They knew a lot of people were tripping and even played up the fact. About half way through the 3 1/2 hours, they bent into Cities on Flame.
Love the album version with Albert Bouchard on lead vocals. A dream of mine would be for The Bouchard Brothers to get a platinum album recorded and do a US tour so they could make their way to Los Angeles. It would be super sweet. Especially if by some miracle for a Summer of Love tour they would for a short time only reunite with Eric Bloom, Buck Dharma and Allen Lanier for a "retirement tour". Not going to happen but it would be awesome!!!
The lessons of life told of by great men of history, Gods blessing to those who have shared in your joys and sorrows and continual praise for His greatness.
Saw them 17 times but the best was at Altamont in late seventies with J. Geils, Black Oak Arkansas, & The Dictators. Worked out well because we got there just when J. Geils were doing encores. They opened with dinosaur scream sound effects & ground shaking dinosaur stomping, as if a dinosaur was coming over the horizon. Then a dinosaur created with green lasers emerged. They opened with Godzilla, of course. Great Show! Too bad the government took away their lasers [probably sent to Iraq].
A good friend turned me on to them about 15 yrs. ago. all i knew then was ...the Reaper and Burnin, both are pieces of POP CRAP!! The real stuff from the first 3 albums is unmatched!! After i heard them i could not get enough!! I have about 700 cd's now and BOC is my most played by far. Still. So painfully under rated!! On a side note... Wishbone Ash,also highly under rated. LONG LIVE BOC Great slide show btw!! Please post more!! Rock On Buck!!!
Reaper and Burnin' are classic BOC. Have a little respect. There is a reason they're timeless classics. Overplayed, yes....but crap?????? You serious??
I was in high school when this came out and I played this album until I wore the grooves out (there were no CDs then). I've seen them live 5 times--following the consecutive releases after this one. The Spectres tour still remains the best rock show ever. You had to be there. And this remains my all-time favorite Cult tune.
nice vid have you ever visited the Hot Rails to Hell website...... its pretty interesting if your into the history of the band plus there compiling a list of concert experiences and storys from fans . I think the site is run buy a guy that was a roadie with them at one time...
Being from northport long island I am a bass player and have grown up with B.O.C. Every album and yes to me they are still called albums because they were vinyl for 5.99 at you local pathmark when I used to buy them, anyway every album tells a story if you listen closely, and always reminds me of home and my old buds. B.O.C. ROCKS...I'M READY R U?
favorite Cult song ever! Me and my roommate went to Asbury College. We would put the speakers (BOSE 301's) in the window and grab our brooms and rock out till the banging on the door started to "turn that sh__ down or I'll give you 5 demerits. It only took 50 demerits to get kicked out. I got kicked out twice.... Oops....
Dominance and submission" (also known as D&s, Ds or D/s) is a set of behaviors, customs and rituals relating to the giving and accepting of dominance of one individual over another in an erotic or lifestyle context. It explores the more mental aspect of BDSM. This is also the case in many relationships not considering themselves as sadomasochistic; it is considered to be a part of BDSM if it is practiced purposefully. The range of its individual characteristics is thereby wide. :o)
great video, thanks for putting that together. BOC was my first concert experience back in probably '75 or '76 in Dallas with Bob Seger .. the lasers, the sounds, the smells! my life changed forever at that point.
@Ne00 huh, seems 2 me i saw BÖC w/ BS in fall '76 in the City by the Bay, & yeah, there was a certain spooky aroma, more than just the "greenery" (remember, concerts back then were canopied by a layer of smoky herbal fragrance) ~ so the arcane scent could have been from the laser equipment, or from pre-show mantic rituals, hmmm ....
One of my all time faves by BOC. My nickname is Dominance because of this song. Thanks for posting all the old BOC memoribilia in this video. Really made it interesting to watch.
I'll say it again, one of the most deliciously evil-sounding closing of any song in existence. The sound of a man truly going mad, capped with one of Buck's most searing solos. Doesn't get any better than that. Most excellent accompanying pix. I like it! Thanks radiovixen.
I think this is a) a great song, b) a fantastic riff and c) has my favourite guitar solo of all time (and yes I know all of EVHs and Steve Vai's stuff - this is far more passionate)
Buck Dharma is a guitar god and should be recognised - Arms Raise, you've heard the awful truth!
@radiovixen76 It is JUST that ! One of the best songs/albums Ever ! I have litrally seen them 30 or so times , About 20 of those in the early 70's (even as Soft White Underbelly) !
@radiovixen76 For sure radio vixen. You have great taste to like BOC like me. Rock on. "Let that girl, let that girl rock and roll. Cities on flame now, with rock and roll!!!"
You need to check out the Blue Oyster Cult Project--or vise versa. If that stuff in those pictures are yours you, got a bad ass collection. I really liked what looked like a Tyranny and Mutation picturedisk with just that perfect cult sign on it.
Rock and Roll hall of fame is a industry jerkoff and the main requirement isnt if you had the rock...but how many units sold and if the editors of rolling stone dug you in college.
Great slide show to go along with a great tune. Love the Show Bill and Ticket Stubs. I used to have all mine from the early-mid70's. I kept them in my 74 Mustang II. $6.00 concert tickets. Those were the days. My first ticket was $5.00. They stayed that price for quite some time. Oh well.
I know this is rather a lot to ask, but would anyone who knows the lyrics be so kind as to post them in a comment? I have always loved BOC's lyrics, for obvious reasons.
really cool montage to a classic recording of one of the most unbelievable songs by a supreme and sublime underground band of the 1970s the amazing Blue Oyster Cult
secret treaties was the watershed mark for boc---I remember agents of fortune being released and thought, "what the hell is this?"---so it goes---at least we'll always have boc's first 3 albums, and they are indeed---rock classics
jbsrknu---You hit the nail on the head. So glad we got to experience the Cult from "The Beginning". I remember listening to this in '74 & with the closing solo, felt like getting nailed in the head with a hammer of ice. THUD!!!
senior---Oh I so respectfully disagree with you. With the original studio version, Mr. Buck Dharma's closing solo brings new meaning to LBJ's famous quote, "Aggression unchallenged is aggression unleashed." Peace.
Oh my God, I saw the hand bill for the Toledo speedway jam @ 1:31. I don't know about 400 kegs of beer, but my GF, my buddies, and I were there. We all came down from Detroit. I think my GF was on my shoulders for most of the day. A couple of weeks later one friend told me that she was topless more than she wasn't. Those were the days.
To those looking for the church from 'on your feet....',if you follow rt35 across the line from Ridgefield Ct,into N.Y. state, then turn left onto Rt 123,follow 123,there is a sharp right-hand curve in the road, and the church is on the left right at that curve. You should be able to find it with my directions,on google or in person....
I was in Eau Claire Wisconsin watching the B. O. C (high on angel dust) standing on a chair rockin' to the band when they started playin' The Jokes On You. At the end when they hit that one piercing note Buck Dharma spun around with that lazer light on his wrist and shot it out into the crowd. It nailed me right between the eyes and knocked off my chair and two rows back... Whatta trip.
lol sounds like something that happened to me, cept i was doing a hit of orange microdot that we bought from some guy walking around the floor before the show started. We didnt think it was going to do anything but said what the hell, and it turned out to be some damn potent stuff. I was standing up , stone still , mesmerized buy the lights and the tune when he spun around and did the laser thing, and it seemed to go right thru to my brain and made me drop to the floor to hide lol.
im 80 years old still smokin the pot no nicotine though little crack or sniff but keep meth away, rots yer teeth! coors, bud, mr bos ton blackberry brandy weed? whats weed rockonbonzp76
A Tidbit for true BOC fans. The "church" on the cover of the 1975 On your feet or on your knees album was in Vista NY.just across the line from Ridgefield Ct,....its still there check it out
Had a look on Google, couldn't see it - got the general idea on the location though, so thanks for that. I'm in the UK but hoping to visit cousins not far from there soon. Nice work, porcupine!
was on there site (hot rails to hell) not long ago and remember reading about that church. they had rented someplace not far from there where they were working up there show for an upcoming tour.
when i was in junior high i came home from school to a party my brother was throwing and a hot ass chick was eyeballing me, she tackled me on the bed and riped my cloths off and this song was playing in the background and that folks is how i lost my virginity
@00intrigue00: LOL! Weren't the 70's great? Loved those "open" parties. This was one of my band's favorite songs to play. I used my brand new 1974 Gibson SG. Party on!
this is the album version, of course. don't people have ears? doh. in moments of madness, you might think - this is the greatest rock and roll song ever. as in, ever. certainly the kinkiest. better than bowie. better than anyone. the final guitar solo is unsurpassed.

You need to check out the Blue Oyster Cult Project--or vise versa. If that stuff in those pictures are yours you, got a bad ass collection. I really liked what looked like a Tyranny and Mutation picturedisk with just that perfect cult sign on it.

A lid? I heard that term when about 7 yrs old. I remember $60 a lid for great Jamaican Redbud or Maui Waui weed. Ancient 1970s.

Rock and Roll hall of fame is a industry jerkoff and the main requirement isnt if you had the rock...but how many units sold and if the editors of rolling stone dug you in college.

ABBA was nominated because the freaks on the panel thought "mama mia" was all that (snapping my fingers in a 'Z' shape).

ABBA IS nominated for induction into the rock and roll hall of fame. what the fuck is going on?
mrdrray 2 years ago
hall of fame material!! ABBA IS FUCKING POP. how dare they even think they are worthy.

So is Madonna and yet they put her in. Go figure. Neither her or ABBA are Rock and Roll. Go figure.

Oh well.

LOVE the Marketts quote in the guitar solo!

I know this is rather a lot to ask, but would anyone who knows the lyrics be so kind as to post them in a comment? I have always loved BOC's lyrics, for obvious reasons.
groovyastrodude 2 years ago
Just for the sake of your information -- you can find the lyrics to pretty much any song by going to Google and typing in the following:
lyrics "[band name]" "[song name]"
I would post them here for you but it's too long and wouldn't fit. Hope that helps anyway

Thanks. Probly shoulda thought of that.

The studio version has a "swing" to its rhythm that the live versions generally didn't have.

secret treaties was the watershed mark for boc---I remember agents of fortune being released and thought, "what the hell is this?"---so it goes---at least we'll always have boc's first 3 albums, and they are indeed---rock classics

jbsrknu---You hit the nail on the head. So glad we got to experience the Cult from "The Beginning". I remember listening to this in '74 & with the closing solo, felt like getting nailed in the head with a hammer of ice. THUD!!!

Tyranny and Mutation never better,BOC!

senior---Oh I so respectfully disagree with you.

HA-HA, I was there too. The beer was 3.2!!! Great show though.

Acesgrinned 2 years ago
lol sounds like something that happened to me, cept i was doing a hit of orange microdot that we bought from some guy walking around the floor before the show started.
