This is on a short list of bad songs from Simon Frith's essay "What Is Bad Music?" Frith writes: "'incompetent' performance and production". He's right, it's very incompetent, but in a good way!
It's so perfectly wrong. I admit I was never aware of this guy until Boers & Bernstein played it. I am going to every recording of this guy that I can find. The Uncle Pecos of the Bahamas!
Thank you Boers and Bernstein. What's this guys deal and why does he have some of his work in museums? My drunk uncle can play this quality of music. hahahaha
Those who have trouble seeing what so many of us appreciate about this might try listening to the cd "The Spring of Sixty Five" with Joseph Spence and the Pinder family. In that setting, you see the scat singing and rhythmic additions of Joseph Spence in the setting in which he usually played, church and community groups. Like many jazz artists, Spence improvised and rearranged familiar (to him) tunes, and assumed his audience had a firm enough grasp on the original to enjoy the riffing.

It sounds like a Lapp shaman casting spells while accompanied by a ragtime guitarist. It's the only version of the song I actually like!
