snake doesn't represent america, it represents humanity and the passion for freedom from the ''prison'' that modern america (and generally the people in power) have created, that's why he destroys the tape in end. It's a direct message from carpenter against the capitalist system (so does his other great movie, ''they live'')
Around 7 mins Blowshimselfupdude makes some great points, but he should have really put in some spoiler alerts in there. reviews typically don't give away the ending.
I love the movie. I think its the equivalent of a darker, low-budget Raiders of the Lost Ark, and I think it's Carpenter's best film (aside from The Thing).
Hey, have you seen the two Hostel movies? I think you might really like them. Like EFNY they are about the dark side of humanity and also very subtle. They don't cram messages down your throat, there's layers and subtext there to see if you want to look for it. They have subtle and underlying social commentary. You should check them out if you haven't, they are very interesting and original and also very dark and disturbing.
Now that I think of it the best part of Escape From New York is the ending. The conclusion actually strolls off like the intro rolls in. I just love how Snake throws the tape away.
Great review. By the way if you like Babylon 5 then you should check out BattleStar Galactica, it'll literally break you. Great stuff and one of the best sci-fi shows ever!
When I first heard about a remake I was exited. But then I thought, that movie was so good because it just has that 80s feel and probably won't have that in the remake. It belongs in the 80s and should stay there.
Ya absolutely, the whole Robocop movie is a complete depiction of how stupid society is and a complete satire, but people will see it only as an action film rather then both. Great review by the way, loved this film for years.

Kind of the same way I feel about Robocop.

Ya thats a really deep film too. That people sometimes mistake for just an action film.
blowshimselfupdude 3 years ago
Yeah, I heard they are going to do a remake, and I'm not looking forward to it.
JacktardedJake 3 years ago
I think that's been canceled.
blowshimselfupdude 3 years ago
Are you talking about robocop or escape because they have an article on IMDB about a 2010 robocop
JacktardedJake 3 years ago
I ment Escape. But now that I think about it I think I remember hearing about Robocop being remade. That sucks.

The best Kurt Russel role is Jack Burton, from Big Trouble in Little China.
