The announcers got it wrong. There was bad blood between the teams that year, but not between Snow & Shields who were actually good buddies and both laughed about it after the fact. This started in the regular season with Hextall vs Trefilov in December in Philly, then Snow vs Trefilov in February (same night as Snow vs Barnaby) at the Aud.
