He created a new style of drummer for god sake's, but my biggest problem with him is that he lacks the "groove" and "feel" to his drumming. Just a bunch of crazy patterns one after the other, and it is so polished he makes it seem robotic, and not human like, which takes away from the feel, IMO

@Jetbazmomma Bozzio is an intense drummer with a huge impressive kit and a lot of experience, true. He could even try to 'smoke' someone like Portnoy or Danny Carey or Gavin Harrison, although I personally prefer the last two by far! But please, Peart, Lang, Haake, Rich are technical, progressive, versatile masters. Uncontested masters. You're right though, Van Halen is a great and very flamboyant drummer, but he does not belong in the same league as any of the forementioned.

He's technically better than Peart I would say. Peart is very creative though and certainly no slouch. I've never understood the infatuation with Travis Barker. He is not in the league of either one. A good old timer like Ian Paice is superior to Travis Barker by a good shot.

The only thing missing is a hand solo like Tommy Aldridge. I wonder if he uses the Sonor twin effects pedals for some doubling technique. The Sonors sound like cannons. I wish he found his home with dream theater. He is a performer and a great musical cat like Mike Portnoy..however Mike Mangini seems like a great fit. he's not playing double bass. If you ever watched any of his videos, he can play double bass speed with one foot. he's playing single bass and hitting hi hat with his other foot.
Ok he's incredible but what I don't understand is how he can be playing double bass at the same time as closing the hats. Normally I'd agree that maybe he is hitting two pedals with each foot, but the hats and the bass aren't at the same time..

I have seen better solo's from him though don't know whats up with this one. Would be better served as a blue man. Im sure their is a middle school student in awe about now.

If he was in demand he would be playing on every track for someone. Comes across like a complete robot. Does seem like a real nice guy though unlike alot of other big time drummers.

Lang has taken drumming to such an extreme, that it looks, sound, and feels like a circus act. Blinding chops (that I wish I had), but no soul, no emotion, no groove. I was really impressed at first with this type of extreme drumming, but I've now totally disconnected... Buddy STILL nails me to my seat!

Thomas Lang also plays guitar, bass, keyboard, and is also a producer, husband, father, and bilingual. You just have to have passion and drive, and it doesn't hurt to start at a very young age either to get to where he is today.
Regarding Buddy Rich, the reason he may be the best ever is because of what he means to drumming from an historical standpoint. He never had formal instruction, he never practiced, nor did he have any inspiration, since percussion was largely uncharted territory.
I saw him today at ExpoMusic here in São Paulo,Brazil ... the performance was amazing ! He's a great drummer and now i'm a great fan ! uhauHAuHAuHAUuh ...
At cheemo; they're called polyrhythms, and mike mangini has it mastered. I'm sorry, buddy rich has nothing on Lang and mangini. There is no combination of 4 different polyrhythms that either of these guys couldnt play. Rich was the best of his time, Lang and mangini are much more evolved drummers, and in 20 years u will see things they never did.
This guy is just on another level. Went to the london thomas lang drum boot camp and his methods and techniques are priceless. Top bloke and amazing drummer. Check out his band STORK

Once you hit a spot like rich or lang who has the right to say whos better? Rich was the best of his time and Lang is among the best. When you get that good no one can really out play you.
I wonder what buddy rich would have to say about langs playing if he were alive?something tells me he would not appreciate langs playing much. @cheemooo Well one major thing you have to understand about Lang vs. Buddy, is their styles. Thomas Lang in his first DVD, Creative Control, talks about how he takes on the job of the electronic drum tracks in the song, as well as the main drum track. That's why Lang plays so much and so busily. Buddy Rich on the other hand, was THE jazz drummer, with awesome speed and endurance, and musicality. His job was provide a rhythm for his band to play along to, with some solos and fills to match up.
and who cares what Buddy Rich would´ve thought? Alot of listerners of modern music would find Buddys playing and music quite boring. Being first doesn´t meen being the best or even being a rolemodel for everything after. Buddy Rich tried to play rock once and it was terrible. I wonder what Lang thinks of Buddys rock-playing.
Relax would you? My comment about Buddy compared to Lang is simply for entertainment and curiosity purposes, I know they play very different kinds of music. Its not a bash toward either just a cartoone like comparison.

Id like to see lang play some insanely independent latin rythem, playing a cascarada with his left hand a seperate rythem with his right, a 2/3 rhumba clave with his left foot and a 3/2 son clave with his right foot and aplly each rythem to a group of musically appropriate carefully selected drums for each bar and also syncopate it with a new lick or fill every bar! Then after that reverse the last idea and sawp feet and hands!
this is just insane. impossible. i used to think neil peart was the best rock drummer in the world but i think this guy is even better. i don't think even neil peart could play like this at his peak in a solo style. i've never heard or seen anything like it.

Lang's style is so advanced, it's ridiculous. No other drummer atm comes even close to his perfection. His independence is almost unhuman.

Lang has taken drumming to such an extreme, that it looks, sound, and feels like a circus act. Blinding chops (that I wish I had), but no soul, no emotion, no groove. I was really impressed at first with this type of extreme drumming, but I've now totally disconnected... Buddy STILL nails me to my seat!

You all talk a good game,but Tony Bozzio and Jacob Armen,would take Tommy.What would be pretty cool,would be if they all battled it out!But to answer choirboy,you forgot who made the drums sound the way they do now,you have to thank Neil Pert from Rush!!!!All good drummers,but been a drummer for 22 years and hands down Jacob would win!!!!!

Thomas Lang also plays guitar, bass, keyboard, and is also a producer, husband, father, and bilingual. You just have to have passion and drive, and it doesn't hurt to start at a very young age either to get to where he is today.
Regarding Buddy Rich, the reason he may be the best ever is because of what he means to drumming from an historical standpoint. He never had formal instruction, he never practiced, nor did he have any inspiration, since percussion was largely uncharted territory.

At cheemo; they're called polyrhythms, and mike mangini has it mastered. I'm sorry, buddy rich has nothing on Lang and mangini. There is no combination of 4 different polyrhythms that either of these guys couldnt play. Rich was the best of his time, Lang and mangini are much more evolved drummers, and in 20 years u will see things they never did.

@ironspooner nice comment man most drummers I know and I am one myself do not really compete its more of playing together and seeing who can keep up. Once you hit a spot like rich or lang who has the right to say whos better? Rich was the best of his time and Lang is among the best. When you get that good no one can really out play you.

I wonder what buddy rich would have to say about langs playing if he were alive?something tells me he would not appreciate langs playing much. It would also be neat to see them drum battle, But lang for reasons of being fair wouild have to have the same size kit as rich, or it would be cool to see rich battle him on a kit like langs, they both have qualites the other one doesnt like all drummers do even so it would be interesting!

@cheemooo Well one major thing you have to understand about Lang vs. Buddy, is their styles. Thomas Lang in his first DVD, Creative Control, talks about how he takes on the job of the electronic drum tracks in the song, as well as the main drum track. That's why Lang plays so much and so busily. Buddy Rich on the other hand, was THE jazz drummer, with awesome speed and endurance, and musicality. His job was provide a rhythm for his band to play along to, with some solos and fills to match up.

and who cares what Buddy Rich would´ve thought? Alot of listerners of modern music would find Buddys playing and music quite boring. Being first doesn´t meen being the best or even being a rolemodel for everything after. Buddy Rich tried to play rock once and it was terrible. I wonder what Lang thinks of Buddys rock-playing.

Relax would you? My comment about Buddy compared to Lang is simply for entertainment and curiosity purposes, I know they play very different kinds of music. Its not a bash toward either just a cartoone like comparison.

@cheemooo The problem with that would be that Buddy Rich would find himself if he rose from the death that drumming and especially drum solos have changed alot...Buddy had some of the fastest hands and feet that weve ever seen and he was a great big band jazz player yet it would be a fish out of water experience for him to be playing against people who have been creating crazy insane chops and fills for 30 years after his death it just wouldnt make since to have that battle

Dude.....really? Let me guess...youre at least 60. Just a guess....but then again u are on a computer. Rich never even had a developed left foot. Your probably one of those types that think they dont make cars like they used to also. Buddy Rich had fast hands....thats all. This guy is a mathematician on the drums. If u could somehow bottle his drumming into a vial you could cure cancer with it. Its not even arguable who's better.

Id like to see lang play some insanely independent latin rythem, playing a cascarada with his left hand a seperate rythem with his right, a 2/3 rhumba clave with his left foot and a 3/2 son clave with his right foot and aplly each rythem to a group of musically appropriate carefully selected drums for each bar and also syncopate it with a new lick or fill every bar! Then after that reverse the last idea and sawp feet and hands!

this is just insane. impossible. i used to think neil peart was the best rock drummer in the world but i think this guy is even better. i don't think even neil peart could play like this at his peak in a solo style. i've never heard or seen anything like it.
