i agree, the only reason illegal immigrants are able to take our jobs is because they are illegal and therefore can be exploited for cheaper labor. Its rely a paradox when dumb rednecks say to kick the immigrants out, what they should rely do is raise the minimum wage for immigrants so that employers will be more prone to hiring original US citizens. screw it, i think we should just legalize pot then all get high and invent a magical eight ball to replace voting in congress.
@ghty102 how do you raise minimum wage for illegal immigrants? You are aware that the fact that they are illegal is what makes their wage exploitable right? Also, its spelled "really"
@SlamburglarWSU you misread the 7 month old comment. what i intended to imply was that it would be ideal to raise minimum wage across the board because the root of the problem could be traced back to the exploitation of illegal immigrants. and if you read on you could probably also get the implication that i was not entirely sober. what i meant was that if these jobs offered higher pay, then maybe people smart enough to form unions would try to hold one. Also, it's spelled "it's". grammar nazi:)
I'm always amazed at how much balls Colbert has. Even though he's in a room full of serious people, and barely anyone's laughing at his jokes, he still stays in character the whole time.
Stephen Colbert really hit the spot. Americans need to open their eyes, start working in the fields and take the jobs of the illegals. But of course Americans are not going to do this. And if that's the case, then STOP saying kick all illegals out. US AMERICANS NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT FIRST, and THAT IS TAKING THE JOBS THAT ILLEGALS R DOING STAND UP FOR THIS COUNTRY THEN, IF NOT QUIT YOUR FUCKING WHINING & LIVE A FREEEEE LIFE.
Do you not get it?! Americans will not do this work, they are too pampered and privileged. If you really are against immigration, start doing that work, otherwise you are just being hypocritical.

FOX would obviously try to make it seem as if Colbert and the congresswoman who invited him took the hearing as a joke, and while its true that he comedically remained in character, his speech is really pointing out the irony of the situation. Some don't want Mexicans taking these picking jobs but there may not be a ton of Americans jumping up to take the jobs if they were taken away from the Mexicnans, and they'd undoubtedly want more money for the same work.

@Dictator300 Let me ask you something, you fuckwit. Did you do any prior research before posting such an intellectually riveting comment? My guess is no. Why don't you prove me wrong?
Colbert's taken a rap for his impersonations but if you watch the whole of his Opening Remarks to Congress and his testimony to the House Judiciary Panel you will see the big picture including how a visa program for farm workers could end up raising farm worker wages and to a level that American's might consider taking on this work. The issues are not simple and are not understood in one minute or less sound bites.
Wow lots of tension! A recent study by the UNiversity of California demonstrates that Hispanics and immigrants are the groups that take the least from their local and federal government. They do send remittences to their countries. Nevertheless they pump a lot of money into the economy. They all do contribute to their federal and local taxes. @eviert Buying into that liberal flawed report? They send almost everything they make across the border. What help is that for us. .What is "alot " of money being "pumped" into our economy?
Natygoly you are an ignorant radical left wing fool!! You might want to get your head out of your ass before you sit down and break your neck. Who ever gave you an economics degree is clearly not suited to be teaching. it is very troubling to think that our education dollars are going to idiots like you.
I wish they would learn to com here legally and stop disrupting our economy. Humanitarian rights are one thing and im for that, but im just saying we as american citizens could not immigrate anywhere else like the way mexican citizens do. there money usually dose not go to support the american economy the way it should it goes right to mexico. Im glad it has been said in a comediac classy manner.
@aesthetichero How do illegal immigrants affect the economy, on the contrary they benefit the economy. If they came legally it would be worst. Why do you think the Republicans and Democrats refuse to do something about the illegal immigration problem? Learn something about economy and the American immigration laws before making such an ignorant comment. Saying the money these people make doesn't support the American economy only shows your ignorance.
@natygoly illegals affect the economy!!! think of all the kids in public schools, hospital visits, state and local resources that are used funded by tax payers which illegals don't pay into! many of these same illegals are on welfare, disability and have public housing...obama's aunt is a perfect example! most hard working illegals send much of their paychecks back to mexico. how do they benefit the economy and how do you justify the treatment of illegals? and what makes you an economist?
@PatricksTime First of all, they cannot get welfare if they are illegals. What about the money they saved to their employers? The majority do pay taxes in a way or another. They helped the consumer because of their cheap labor, do you think if farmers were paying more for legal workers the cost of food wouldn't go up? And what makes me an economist is my degree. This is only a few examples of the way they benefit the economy. Learn about the subject before talking.
@doublenono88 Yeah I know a couple, including myself. I am against illegal immigration, but I realize that not everyone can immigrate legally like some of my relatives who cant get visas because they dont make enough money or own property. (note: I am not trying to justify illegal immigration =) )
Very funny and well said! No human is illegal! Congress must wake up and pass a just and comprehensive immigration reform. Listening to the crazy right wing KKK Teabeggars will make sure the GOP becomes extinct in 20 yrs. (wrong side of history and demographics; Billy Bob is losing the numbers game).
Oh, the GOP did kill the Dream act last week. Vote your interests in November!
@runinstyledotcome no, Colbert is TOO GOOD to become president. Once someone becomes president they seem to lose their power and perspective, as if they become trapped in a box of bullshit.
@poodlegirl4848 heeey...sarah palin was for vice why cant colbert??? id be like that movie with robin williams only that in it he became president....but then again Ronald Reagen was an actor before soooooo......
You know what really pisses me off, when i see a bunch of mexicans holding a sign that says "we are america". When really they are a bunch of illegals that WE are paying for.
@Jthebig90 lol How do you know that they are Mexican? maybe they are Hispanic American Citizens. BTW you know what pisses me off? Lazy people oh and long lines at Wal-Mart. Not revelant though =P
People with Irish last names piss me off! Not cause their Irish but because they complain about immigrants and their family probably came here on a boat in the 1930's. America and North America alike was built on immigration. Who cares if you are white or brown. We just need to think carefully about selective breeding and even genetic cloning. We need to clone more Brad Pitt's, Will Smith's and hell even Jennifer Lopez...No shittin...
yea whats up with that Americans complaining about immigrants? they are like they are TAKING OUR JOBS!!!! OUR JOBSS!!! so when they are asked will you do that job then?(work on a farm) they are like "uuh hell no" so you want an easy affordable job and you complain about immigrants those guys at least work an do not complain if you really wanted to feed your family you would do the same as them and WORK but nooo you rather complain ....and then humanity goes back to square one.....
@daft9punk Complaints about losing our jobs is created by the increase in the outsourcing of labor, not necessarily illegals coming into America. Complaints against illegals derive from safety and other issues.
@Aristotle2000 Pew research consistently show that people who watch Colbert/Stewart are more informed about current events/ history/politics than other "news" outlets (as in outlet malls...) You have to have a certain threshold level of knowledge to understand the satire. But good on him for drawing so much attention to this issue. Look at all the press it's getting
this guy is a joke,an unfunny joke at that.no wonder nothing gets done in politics with assholes like this being allowed to speak on capitol hill.this is why america is on the downward slope and getting worse every day....good luck to you all, you`ll need it.
This is how discussions in congress work. There is more to this testimony than whats shown on the surface. Hes mocking the system and creating a Filibuster parody that entertains and teaches at the same time.
Quote:
"No wonder nothing gets done in politics with assholes like this being allowed to speak on capitol hill." You'll be happy to know that people like Colbert don't usually do this, nothing gets done in congress because of politicians who really don't care for ya
@WinstonThirstkill Nothing gets done because Republicans are being bitches and Democrats are being bitches. Maybe if bitches like you would knock that the fuck off then shit would get done. But unfortunately there are too many bitches in this country.
wow, what the f*ck is wrong with Congress? This is a serious matter and tehy bring a jokester who worked on a farm for 1.5 days? Like hes an expert? Just how lazy and stupid are these kids in Congress. Kudos to Conyers for calling him out
I like Colbert, I enjoy his satire and have been a fan of his sketch comedy in the past, but this strikes me as strained and cheap, helping to blur the line between comedy and government. Congressional hearings are srs bzns, and should be mocked from outside, not from within.
I love that he is simply too smart for the congresspeople to "get it". Same for most of the reporters. One guy asks him after "how do you feel about making light of serious topics". Idiot, that's what he does. He makes serious points with sarcasm and satire. He's making more sense than anyone in congress.
isn't it amazying how completely un-funny colbert and stewart sound without the standard comedy central "canned" laughter soundtrack. just a couple of morons.
@catndryer no I wasn't aware of the laughter from the "live studio audience" making it more less pertinent . All Praise to the writers at Comedy Central and Stewart/Colbert for the great show.
Next they'll be saying that Americans don't "want" the 120 billion dollars in welfare, healthcare and education that hard working Americans spend every year..........to support illiterate Mexicans. Screw the poor Mexicans. There are poor people all over the world who are DYING to get here. Send boats to Africa, Viet Nam, Malasia.......bring in some poor illiterates who REALLY want to be Americans. America is a Melting Pot.......not a nasty ass Chili Bowl.
@catndryer Chili Bowl is from texas and south of the border not from mexico...... but come on you wouldnt say something dumb on the internet without checking your facts now will you.....arrghh!
Great way to for Congress to get this issue on the minds of the American People. That shows how much power the Celebrities have in this country. You might be pro or against immigrant workers, but Colbert did it graciously and very smart!!!
@Freenetnow So Obama saying they're keeping the Bush cuts for people earning under 250k doesn't count then? What's being proposed is supposedly only raising taxes for the top 3% of income-earners. I'm open to valid references stating that I'm wrong.
I never said employment wasn't high. I just said some of the actions taken during the recession prevented it from blowing out even higher (speculated, of course).
Comedians can have a valid message too.And much easy to listen to than people yelling.
Attacking Colbert is one thing (you don't have to like his style, sure) but just adding as an aside "and by the way, this administration is screwing America over" sounds to me like it's being read from a Fox News script is all.
@Freenetnow The "unemployment at record highs" & "taxes are going up" just seemed like classic remarks to stick on the end of any criticism of left-of-centre views. The taxes argument has far more to it than just "going up" (1stly because the plan for them to go up was set by the previous admin, and 2ndly that they're planning to extent tax cuts for those who need them to get by),& (admittedly depending on whose research you look @) the unemployment is bad but well could have been far worse.
@Freenetnow Are you proud being part of a political party that seeks to exploit migrant farm workers for cheap labor so commercial farmers can get rich by having them perform strenuous labor in dangerous conditions?
Just note. Colbert's testimony cost all of us, the U.S. Taxpayers $125,000.00 PER HOUR.
Do you think this was a good use of your money? I sure don't! $125K can feed a lot of people, buy a lot of school supplies, employ a few teachers, a few cops, ..........you get my point.

This is an insult. We have a Congress and an Administration that thumbs its nose at the Constitution and makes a mockery of Congressional proceedings in this manner. All that Congress and this Administration want to do is laugh at the American people, and when that is not enough, they will bring in Colbert, I am certain at the taxpayers' expense, to poke fun at the American people and then laugh at him.

@mccabedoug Hey McMegaDoucheBag, are you saying that his satirical commentary did not raise any legitimate poignant points about how commercial farmers exploit immigrant workers for profit? And then you assert "they will bring in Colbert, I am certain at the taxpayers expense" Apparently you utilize the same fact checking methodology that Fox News does... you make sh!t up and assert it with "certainty" when it is a lie. Colbert paid for all of his own expenses to appear, and it was informative.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Stephen Colbert is an idiot! Thank you Fox News for publicly announcing what idiots the far left is yet again. As we all know, MSNBC and other liberal shows never tell the truth on any issues anymore. Thank goodness we have Fox News where we are able to get balanced news coverage. Thanks again! Go Republicans, beat the heck out of the Democrats in November.
You look to Fox Fake News as balanced coverage and you consider Colbert an idiot? I bet you think corporations are out for your best interest.. It is illegal for publicly traded companies to care about people.
If immigrants are given citizenship then corporations cant exploit the workers. Corporations/Republicans want to keep immigrants in their countries so they can exploit them there.
Thank you for wasting hundreds of thousands of our taxpayer Dollars you moron. Am sure the idiots who watch that program have no clue how much money we wasted on this joke....Congress made itself look so stupid today.
@osallent Relax dickhole it's an issue that needs to be discussed, and a blatant joke is better than the really unfunny joke that your ilk has been playing on America for the last 2 years!
@osallent Hey fool, where were "hundreds of thousands of dollars" wasted here? Colbert paid all of his own expenses to appear. However, that much was indeed wasted every time Bush used Air Force One to take his numerous vacations. When he flew unnecessarily to showboat and sign the foolish Terry Schiavo bill. You clearly don't have a clue. What was the money you imagine spent on? It's sad that thousands of taxpayer dollars were wasted on your public education. Colbert raised our awareness today.
@mj30202 Get a grip !!! What about all the obamas vacations? Who is paying for that, you clown? You really do not have a clue on federal expenditures. Colbert is funny, but not in Congress. It was a rather lame attempt to get his point across.Kind of like your point (what ever that is). Stick to the comedy channel for your laughs and News!!
black lady texting @ 4:31, dam this government, and the elected officials, dam this is important yet you have to remember you friend that you can't go to bingo night tonight
"I don't want a tomato picked by a Mexican. I want it picked by an American, then sliced by a Guatemalan, and served by a Venezuelan, in a spa where a Chilean gives me a Brazilian" --- EPIC!!!!
the funny man comedy hour act completely tarnished his serious and valid points, its congress not the apollo......colbert was just a ploy to get coverage, those stupid crusty congressmen/woman didnt give 2 shits about what he was saying and apparently the american ppl for that matter..........america's in dire straits
@TheEmcee1 Colbert's intentionally funny and brilliant satire shed light on how ridiculous the "border security" policies being pushed for by the Republicans are. When people like Sara Palin are unintentionally hilarious... that tarnishes everything her and her cohorts stand for (as if the substance of such could be further denigrated on the merits).
@mediaphotographer I guess you didn't get it. You couldn't comprehend the point. how come they didn't request that stuttering druggie Rush Limbaugh make an appearance?
@mediaphotographer If you hate this so much why do you bother even watching the video? Are you dense or something? Why don't you go follow around some celebrities taking pictures of them mr. "media photographer"
@moronreos123 I do not hate. dislike yes. I do not care for the vid.. It is disturbing to me. No little boy, I am not a paparazzi! But . I do photograph famous people.
@mediaphotographer Good for you. OMG colbert spoke for 6 minutes in congress. With all this lost time, how are they ever going to catch up? Why do you keep bringing up peoples ages? Just because you are older than somebody doesn't mean that you're smarter, unless it's a little kid. That's some 3rd grade "my mom said" bullshit. Why did you bother responding to my comment again? Did you really need a response?
Goes to show how this phony bombs without an audience full of mindless shills who will laugh at anything from farts to nut shots. Doesn't he remind you of that nasty person at school who gets off on belittling other people? If you think what he had to say was clever, incisive or worthy of anything more than an embarrassed chuckle, please accept my sympathy for your loss in the gene pool lottery.
This was bad manners without a hint of anything clever.
@Observer585 You probably don't even understand how your entire post implodes with hypocrisy. You belittle him and all that agree with him, while failing to realize he is doing this to raise awareness of those who are exploited by commercial farmers... people who literally risk their lives... so we can have cheap produce. At the hearing they discussed how produce pickers work hours in the hot sun without adequate water and die of heat stroke. That is why Colbert did this. Hello, shitforbrains?
is this a joke lol

@aesthetichero How do illegal immigrants affect the economy, on the contrary they benefit the economy. If they came legally it would be worst. Why do you think the Republicans and Democrats refuse to do something about the illegal immigration problem? Learn something about economy and the American immigration laws before making such an ignorant comment. Saying the money these people make doesn't support the American economy only shows your ignorance.
natygoly 1 year ago
@natygoly illegals affect the economy!!! think of all the kids in public schools, hospital visits, state and local resources that are used funded by tax payers which illegals don't pay into! many of these same illegals are on welfare, disability and have public housing...obama's aunt is a perfect example! most hard working illegals send much of their paychecks back to mexico. how do they benefit the economy and how do you justify the treatment of illegals? and what makes you an economist?
PatricksTime 1 year ago
@PatricksTime First of all, they cannot get welfare if they are illegals. What about the money they saved to their employers? The majority do pay taxes in a way or another. They helped the consumer because of their cheap labor, do you think if farmers were paying more for legal workers the cost of food wouldn't go up? And what makes me an economist is my degree. This is only a few examples of the way they benefit the economy. Learn about the subject before talking.
natygoly 1 year ago
@doublenono88 Yeah I know a couple, including myself. I am against illegal immigration, but I realize that not everyone can immigrate legally like some of my relatives who cant get visas because they dont make enough money or own property. (note: I am not trying to justify illegal immigration =) )

Colbert's correct about issuing more temp visas for ag workers.
But, that's a problem since 40% of all the illegal aliens here didn't sneak in, but had visas & simply refuse to ever go back home.
By law, every temp ag worker MUST be sponsored & provided living conditions most often much better than those at home, adding HUGE expense.
All 9-11 hijackers had visas. None complied with laws that would have stopped them.
Law like AZ's SB-1070 can fix visa overstays but Obama is fighting it!

yea whats up with that Americans complaining about immigrants? they are like they are TAKING OUR JOBS!!!!

The distinction only exists when you consider yourself a member of a country.

Comedians can have a valid message too.And much easy to listen to than people yelling.
motormouthtim 1 year ago
Attacking Colbert is one thing (you don't have to like his style, sure) but just adding as an aside "and by the way, this administration is screwing America over" sounds to me like it's being read from a Fox News script is all.
motormouthtim 1 year ago
@Freenetnow The "unemployment at record highs" & "taxes are going up" just seemed like classic remarks to stick on the end of any criticism of left-of-centre views. The taxes argument has far more to it than just "going up" (1stly because the plan for them to go up was set by the previous admin, and 2ndly that they're planning to extent tax cuts for those who need them to get by),& (admittedly depending on whose research you look @) the unemployment is bad but well could have been far worse.
motormouthtim 1 year ago
@Freenetnow Yeah, I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there. Do some research from somewhere other than Fox News and come back later eh?
