I dont care who this "Harvard Professor" thinks he is..... Police are in a position of authority and there job is to promote peace and preserve order. If Gates would have simply showed his ID there would have been no problems.

Jenerikuser, I agree with you. I also think Gates decided early on that he wanted to turn the incident into a racial issue. This happens way too often. Shame on Obama for jumping to conclusions and saying the Cambridge officers acted stupidly.

So Armstrong was paid $500,000 by the Bush administration to support "No Child Left Behind" and he's a credible source on race in America. Race certainly played a role in this, but the overall problem is abuse of power by the police. The officer should have given his name, but he didn't respect this black man, Professor Gates. When I was profiled, "Officer Doe" gave me a fake name and #. They think they can treat black men with disrespect. Officer/Overseer Jim Crow (James Crowley)!

Giving evidence without first identifying yourself (by just showing your papers) turns the said evidence to not credible nor reliable.
Refusing to prove his identify as requested was the best way to end at the police station.
Professor was obviously aware of that, but frustrated by years of discrimination, he voluntary chose to (try to) shoot down that white cop creating this affair.
I thought Obama was cleverer, being so easily trapped is primary manipulation.

Professor Gates NEVER said " I talk to your mama outside". This was a statement that Crowley made up in his trumped up police report and NO ONE has stepped up to challenge the authenticity of the report! WHY did Crowley refuse to give his name & badge number???

There had been a rash of break-ins in the area recently, the police were doing their job. He became indignant as soon as he was asked to show ID, how could the police just leave? Prof. Gates was just embarrassed and lashed out using his race as a weapon. You DO NOT confront police!! Even children know better. Clearly Gates proved himself to be the racist. It is Gates who should apologize or trying to make this a race issue. Shame on him
