I remember coming out of The Pavilion Theatre in Piccadilly Circus after seeing the film "It's Trad Dad", thinking the film was not very good. But this performance of Gene McDaniels singing this song did something to me and I Couldn't get it out of my head. I have remembered it all these years, absolutely wonderful to see it again, thankyou so much. I was saddened to hear that he died a couple of months ago. Gene McDaniels you were truly a great singer. R.I.P.
Glad to hear that as I already like a lot of Gene's songs and this is an exceptional one. Listening to this you can't really doubt that Gene had an influence on Scott Walker that lasted longer than the covering of this tune. Nice post, thank you!
@quietstorm444 Eugene McDaniels, who recorded the 1961 hit “A Hundred Pounds of Clay,” this song "Chip Chip,"and later wrote Roberta Flack ’s chart-topping single “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” has died at 76 on 3 Aug 2011.
check out, john rowles rendition of ''another tear falls'' absolute power house of a voice, the ''kiwi king'' from ''the land of the long white cloud'' super star in the ''great maori tradition.. J R. YOUR A LEGEND..
This is the only thing I remember from a dreadful film called "Its trad Dad" What this great singer was doing appearing in such a bad movie I will never know
I'VE SERIOUSLY HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS VIDEO FOR YEARS! I SAW THIS MOVIE ON TCM AND I ALWAYS HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS AND NOW I FOUND IT! THANKS!
In regard to my comment on this beautiful song by Gene McDaniels, "Another Tear Falls ", my statement " My ODE TO DAVID RUFFIN" was obviously not understood by you what I was stating. Not that David Ruffin SOUNDED like Gene McDaniels or Visa-versa, but the word "ODE" (my poem or song ) TO DAVID RUFFIN....."You are still here in my heart, but just when I think I'm all
cried out, another tear falls, then I know MY LOVE FOR YOU WILL NEVER DIE"
The flip side of Hundred Pounds Of Clay is called, C'mon Take A Chance. It's definitely in my top 10 favorite songs of all time. I highly recommend it.
The guy sitting at the table with Helen Shapiro is Craig Douglas who covered 100 pounds of clay in the uk depriving Gene of a hit there - hs other song Tower of Strength was covered by Frankie Vaughan depriving him yet again.
@guidofski You Got that right about Scott's voice! I can listen to his singing all day long. This version by Gene McDaniels is beautiful also, he had a wonderful voice.
thanks for sharing..where did you get such a clear clip??? is the movie on DVD now??

I love his singing. I had no idea he'd passed. So many ways to get news yet so much is left out by those who should tell us!!
May he forever rest in peace.

a great reminder to why I hate rap music, a fad that I thought would have ended in the early 90s.

@top20modernrock
Rap is such skanky bilge, will it never return to the sewer it belongs in. Here's a reminder of how good black music once was.
zippgun1 3 weeks ago
@top20modernrock funny you say that.
If you dig deeper than the radio pap, you'll find true value in Hip HOp-but it's rare.
I agree with your view for 80% of the rap/hip hop. But you must see
more than the bias. Rap surely died long ago, and that's not the art fault.
Eugene Lived off royalties to samples, and he appreciated that, and the
true exposure that the samples made to divert a few kiddies to go check
out Eugene back catalogue. Eugene was one of the greatest. RIP.

Thanks so much for this. Fantastic song, fantastic voice and such a classy performance. The black and white photography and Gene smoking
make this truly hypnotic!
By the way, I love The Walker Brother's cover too; in fact only Scott Walker's other-wordly voice could get away with it really... ;)
