  • The engine ran away which is what snapped the prop.

  • "dead stick!!"

  • now there's a pilot

  • If the engine locked up, at those speeds, it prolly broke the crankshaft but still with the front bit intact with some nice smooth engine bearings holding it.....so when the prop in 350+mph airstream, un-feathered, is suddenly free'ed of load, it suddenly becomes a windmill, one that instantlly spun up to redicioulus rpm till it desintigrated. Props are (depends on diameter) are only spun fast enough to keep tip speeds below supersonic. Engine/prop RPM prolly 3000ish, you can hear it go insane.

  • @mytmousemalibu Based on my reading of Kevin's blog entry (which I had to dig for, cuz the link in the description doesn't work), you're close, but not quite. Turns out the oil filter housing broke off the engine. When the oil pressure dropped, the prop governor let it spin up. When the engine seized up, it threw a rod, and the sudden stop is what snapped the prop and shattered the hub.

  • k?

  • to me it looks like the engine blew probably no oil pressure. The sudden breaking of the engine caused to prop to come apart. The sound you hear is delayed because of the distance, sounds like gears stripping. You can see the smoke start right before the prop flies apart if you stop and start it like frames.

  • Who's the stupid shit that keeps saying "he's gonna be tail heavy".....not shit sherlock. How bout..."hey, he's a glider now"

  • At least he didnt crash it into the VIP seating area !

  • I love watching good pilots react to that stuff. Trading airspeed for a little altitude and making a great landing.

  • @acsherm3 using gravity just like a roller coaster

  • @acsherm3 You should check my channel out as i have what i consider the best episodes of air crash investigations where all the passangers have is a great pilot to save them. There is no luck in skill.Cheers:)

  • "Oooops!" said the plane.

Awesome job at saving the day, Sir!

  • WHOAAA heck of a pilot! its amazing a prop can do that. ouch. I know the unlimiteds have the engine chained to the firewall in case the engine seizes it wont ripoff completely

  • @straighttailpilot The engine was held in with only one bolt after that. I saw the damage the next day. Guy was LUCKY that the engine did not fall out!!! Engine was of course totally trashed.

  • @RaelB WOW! that is crazy. amazing it didnt ripoff! I dont know if id want to race without a chain after experiencing something like that. My father is and A&P IA he said for the prop to break like that it had to have about 30 tons on the hub to do that. amazing. glad no one was hurt.

  • WOW! Heard all about this in Sept. but could never find a vid... Looks nasty. Glad he came out okay!

  • ouch.

  • I was there pitting for the t-6 pace plane and i saw this one happen when i was leaving my trailer. Last time I heard a plane rev that high was in 09 and a guy lost his prop governor. Im happy he made it, and hope to see him next year.

  • @COM0fAek Well your mostly correct on your information. The only thing that is incorrect is #3. Thats a fixed pitch prop. Other then that you are spot on. I only know about the prop because I was there I saw what happend. Looked at the carnage and talked with Kevin about it.

  • @BlueWaterBoat That is incorrect. It was an MT constant speed prop. It was not fixed pitch. Unfortunately it was not counterbalanced so it went into flat pitch when the oil pressure dropped. MT is developing a counter weighted prop which he will use next year. I hope it's a strong prop since Kevin has hinted at bolting on a turbocharged IO-800 (8cyl) in place of the IO-540 (6cyl).

  • @MX304 Just watching the vid, that is what i guess happened. Sounded like hi power with steep pitch on the prop then the prop shot to flat and the drag went to almost zero. BTW, how did the RPM meter fare? :P

  • Looks like the oil smoke started before the prop blew. This would make sense; a loss in oil pressure causes the prop to fail to fully fine, overspeed, and then it blows.

  • It reminds me my childhood :)

  • I'm guessing the delay in sound is due to the range. It sounds like the prop blew, then the engine revved up suddenly due to no load on it.

  • From the conversation I overheard in the pits, sounded an oil line let go,lost oil PSI/prop feathered/over reved engine & BANG.....Sure were a LOT of badly wounded parts spread 'round in the pit area....Lookes VERY pricey !!!!
