As usual as for many piano etudes in the literature, you look at the first page and think "with some practice I can get this".... but then comes the rest :-(
This is quite an interesting piece. Not bad for an étude. I tried this myself .... And was beaten up badly by the monstrous difficulty.. Especially when up to speed. The quick finger work requires great skill
Stephen Hough is rapidly becoming my favorite interpreter. His playing has physical, artistic, emotional, and intellectual power. The beautiful melodies in this etude were always clearly elucidated and the accompanying flights of arpeggio were absolutely brilliant. Stephen Hough somehow manages to improve works that are already the products of genious. Kudo Maestro Hough! Thank you for the post, bartje 11.
Moszkowski could have lost this composition in a bet or a game against Schlözer I've heard somewhere, then it is credited to him after. But this virtuosity writing looks very close from Moszkowski style, purely romantic and very athletic in some parts. Not so much known to get tired to listen to this gem. Follow the Sheet if you can.
Can somebody tell me why it is THAT difficult. I don't say it isn't but I don't see why it should be more difficult than any other Liszt or Rachmaninoff etude. Of course I never tried to play it and maybe have no idea, but if somebody could explain me the main difficulty of this piece I would be very thankful.
@RediForKing 3\4 meter, 16th thiplets all the way, almost nothing repeats, keeping the brilliance of those 16th light in tempo while maintaining the melody in the other hand along with the harmony. you should be a mega-ultra cool dood to play it in tempo without stopping and without missing any notes. yet its very musical! so how do you get it all together?)
and you shouldnt compare Liszt and Rachmaninov to this) nothing alike. different techinque and composition style.
thank you, bartje11, for this video and for the informations about Paul de Schlözer. I also searched for informations about the composer and found very few information.
@klaviermusikfreund I have a feeling that there is something to the rumor that he was Moskowski. Sometimes composers used aliases for various reasons, only insiders knew and understood.
@bartje11 The similarities to Moszkowski's op 72 no 11 are actually a very strong argument against M. as composer for this piece. I do not know the whole of M.'s works, but in the parts I know there are no instances of two pieces having even remotely as close similarities. So nothing points to M. being inclined to self-copy to that extent, whereas for a "small" composer, it would be quite natural to borrow from an appreciated model.
Also, the score looks more crowded than any M. I have seen.
@kingdave84 Warm-up can be something harder than you can perform on stage, so when somebody is performing this, you can just imagine what he won't play on stage :)
This music is actually less interesting than the Moskowski i know .This music is best could be forgotten. We all want to hear knew stuff but this ain't it. fingers moving ...so what.
i laughed when i heard this and saw the notes - this all seems phenomenally difficult, i don't even know where i'd begin attempting to play something like this. nevertheless really wonderful to listen to.
@d0d2200 Lol believe me I kno. I printed the music and playing the right hand slowing it took forever just to get through a few measures haha there's just soooo many notes.
What the actual fuck did I just listen to? ... o_o

How did he play the final chord without "rolling" it? Maybe he left off the top A flat? Anyone know?

And to think that Rachmaninov would warm up with this work... incredible.
