That's more of a cock up from the writers strike :P the series ended up out of order. this was meant to be him finally leaving, or at least officially leaving his post at the hospital, but the next one was meant to be shown before.

One of the positive effects of the strike is that cos the last series was so short (12 instead of the planned ~18) and didnt really end, they're doing another season (possibly two if i remember the rumors right..) to give the series a proper send-off.
