I don't know much about Bapu. Nor have I ever read him. But I believe that despite his limitations and disagreement with different leaders on some issues, he was the most powerful and most influential and truly a national leader. All other leaders had only partial or regional influence. Probably this is the reason he was affectionately and unanimously declared as Father of the nation.

The fact is that Gandhi, and 'Gandhism' was used as the very foundation for the civil rights movement in the U.S when King visited India. It's already clear about what my opinion is on Gandhi, but regardless, he did inspire Kings civil disobediance movement, and remained a symbol through out Kings lifetime. MLK new, as all Christians do, there is: "A time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace." Ecclesiastes 3:8. He didn't verbally endorse JFK, but he did meet both candidates and found JFK to be the better hope, as he stated in his autobiography.
