I love metallica and megadeth's music. i just think that metallica are complete sellouts and dave mustaine is a dick who needs to learn how to get along with other musicians.
Changed styles? IMO they've simplified their music. They used to be MUCH more technical with their writing style (I'm referring to every album Pre-Black Album).
The second that Metallica hired Bob Rock on as a producer, they sold their metal roots away for fame and fortune. Again, I thoroughly enjoy listening to all of Metallica's stuff, but their gains are ill gotten and they are a text book case of SELLOUTS.
Again, I'm not saying that commercial success = sellout band, I'm saying that Metallica's simplification of their music to broaden their audience in order to GAIN commercial success is what makes them sellouts. I still dig their music, I just dont like what they did in order to become successful.
Led Zep became commercially successful and I dont think they sold out. If anything, they became more experimental. Physical Graffiti was way more out there than Led Zep I or II.
Yeah Death Magnetic was awesome, I just saw their tour 4 months ago in Ontario, CA. They put on quite a show. The reason DM was so much better than their previous few album releases was because they decided to go "back to their roots". They kicked Bob Rock out and brought in Rick Ruben. They realized after St. Anger that following the trend (ie getting rid of solos), DOES NOT MAKE THE FANS HAPPY.
actually when Bob Rock decided to produce the album that would become the black album he was pushing them to stay with the style of And Justice for all because they were starting to get big. He was shocked that THEY wanted to change sounds...
I didn't mean to infer that Bob Rock was or was not a defining factor in their sound. I was simply stating that the Bob Rock period of Metallica produced simple, commercial music, regardless of what Bob Rock "pushed" the band to do.
EVEN IF what you say is correct, how does it "by all accounts" make me wrong? Metallica sold out, plain and simple. Even if Bob Rock didn't push them to be simplistic and commercial, they still did it on their own volition.
Well I don't understand why you fail to see that, while they were interested in making money (can you fault them for that?), they all thought that it was wrong to write songs to the point in which the only focus they have is to not mess up the performance... Ya know, it wasn't just the money.. Why not just make songs 'songs'?
If I'm understanding you correctly, you're assuming that they simplified their music because they were worried about messing up during the performance? Metallica's NEVER had an issue with that, and as far as I can tell after seeing them live, they can still perform their old stuff.

Oh, and dont forget Metallica's handling of Napster. Any other artist who didnt solely make music for the money would have let the free distribution of their music slide. Regarding Napster, Metallica issued a public statement that anyone who downloads their songs will be sought out and prosecuted. Lars may have said "we just want control over the distribution", but that's just a crock of bullshit.
They also sued a makeup company for creating a shade of eye shadow called Metallica...

Do you have any idea what the word "megadeth" means? If not, I've got some news for you, it IS a real word! It's spelled a little differently. But, it really does have a definition. It's not something Dave just made up. Look it up! I like both Metallica and MegaDeth. Why does one have to be better than the other?

what the hell man? megadeth is a fucking amazing band, and dave mustaine is a fucking god! and, yes i do love metallica but they are sell outs now man.. (as sad as it is) and their new stuff is NOT Ride The Lightning, and megadeth just keeps getting better and better. dave mustaine is back stronger and better than ever, and dont you EVER say he should have killed himself, because he is a god to many people out there, and that is a REAL insult to metal there buddy!

thats really funny considering more than half of metallica's GOOD songs are written by mustaine.
btw mustaine got the band name idea from a politician's description of nuclear bombs. "devices of mass destruction and mega-death." Metallica is actually a female name + the name of a makeup brand.
I love metallica and megadeth's music. i just think that metallica are complete sellouts and dave mustaine is a dick who needs to learn how to get along with other musicians.

Changed styles? IMO they've simplified their music. They used to be MUCH more technical with their writing style (I'm referring to every album Pre-Black Album).
The second that Metallica hired Bob Rock on as a producer, they sold their metal roots away for fame and fortune. Again, I thoroughly enjoy listening to all of Metallica's stuff, but their gains are ill gotten and they are a text book case of SELLOUTS.

Again, I'm not saying that commercial success = sellout band, I'm saying that Metallica's simplification of their music to broaden their audience in order to GAIN commercial success is what makes them sellouts. I still dig their music, I just dont like what they did in order to become successful.
Led Zep became commercially successful and I dont think they sold out. If anything, they became more experimental. Physical Graffiti was way more out there than Led Zep I or II.

Yeah Death Magnetic was awesome, I just saw their tour 4 months ago in Ontario, CA. They put on quite a show. The reason DM was so much better than their previous few album releases was because they decided to go "back to their roots". They kicked Bob Rock out and brought in Rick Ruben. They realized after St. Anger that following the trend (ie getting rid of solos), DOES NOT MAKE THE FANS HAPPY.

actually when Bob Rock decided to produce the album that would become the black album he was pushing them to stay with the style of And Justice for all because they were starting to get big. He was shocked that THEY wanted to change sounds...

I didn't mean to infer that Bob Rock was or was not a defining factor in their sound. I was simply stating that the Bob Rock period of Metallica produced simple, commercial music, regardless of what Bob Rock "pushed" the band to do.
EVEN IF what you say is correct, how does it "by all accounts" make me wrong? Metallica sold out, plain and simple. Even if Bob Rock didn't push them to be simplistic and commercial, they still did it on their own volition.

Well I don't understand why you fail to see that, while they were interested in making money (can you fault them for that?), they all thought that it was wrong to write songs to the point in which the only focus they have is to not mess up the performance... Ya know, it wasn't just the money.. Why not just make songs 'songs'?

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're assuming that they simplified their music because they were worried about messing up during the performance? Metallica's NEVER had an issue with that, and as far as I can tell after seeing them live, they can still perform their old stuff.
I love Metallica, but you cant ignore the fact that they simplified their music and changed their style to gain a more general audience.

Oh, and dont forget Metallica's handling of Napster. Any other artist who didnt solely make music for the money would have let the free distribution of their music slide. In fact, they would have encouraged it. They were MILLIONAIRES and they were suing some kids for downloading a couple of their songs. That is downright greedy.

Oh.. Metallica has never been against giving their music away for free... The problem with Napster is that Metallica had no voice in the matter. They were never given the choice to say "Yeah, go ahead and do it"

Thrash Metal isn't inherently a commercial genre. Besides, the record sales for And Justice For All and Master of Puppets combined didn't add up to Black Album.
Regarding Napster, Metallica issued a public statement that anyone who downloads their songs will be sought out and prosecuted. Lars may have said "we just want control over the distribution", but that's just a crock of bullshit.
They also sued a makeup company for creating a shade of eye shadow called Metallica...
