A boilover is what happened in Venezuela in 1982 in the electrical plant of tacoa, you can find videos here, that boilover took the lives of firemen and news crews, for some reason no one took in to consederation something like that could happen
Also, all that heat would burn the oxygen out of the air surrounding it, anyone nearby would be in danger of suffocation, along with the extreme burns of course.
@carmenlee87 The reason you see people walking around before it blows is because the officer in charge was actually aware of this possibility, which is why noone was killed in this incident,as noone was putting anymore water onto the tank.Other documentaries on this actually show a firefighter talking about how they tried to prevent this,as he knew what it was, right after the explosion. The problem was the release valve,as heard in this video, was not fully opened and too much water got in .
A BLEVE is when fuel starts to boil inside a closed container, until eventualy due to the increase in presure the container bursts and the fuel ecnites in the air.
a boilover is when WATER rappidly turns to steam and proppels the burning fuel upwards.
a boilover is what happens when you throw water in a frying pan.
Though my knowledge of this kind of fire is from candlewax/water mixes, I think reporter gets it simplified in his complicated explanation..:
"...steam expanding into flames / Once the temp reaches 212F [100C] (..) steam ignites."
-Sort of, IMO..steam (as H2O) cant burn - hence it is steam. This can mix with fuel, and it is this we see a fuel/steam gas, caused by sudden expa. of the comp (overheated) water at the bottom, right?
So yes, it IS a bit more complicated.. :) Please correct me..
This was a boilover. It is a completely different phenomenon than a bleve. Gordon explains the boilover well. A bleve can only take place in a pressure vessel.
Boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion. Kinda like when a propane tank explodes.. the liquid heats up and expands to the point where the container cant handle the pressure anymore. then Boom
No, I was replying the the comment made above mine asking what BLEVE meant. which what I said was correct. Granted a boilover and bleve are 2 different things.. .I was just replying to the question asking what a bleve was =D
I'd like to see a video of the whole explosion that doesn't keep on cutting to some bloke talking, then start again, then cut to another bit of the explosion with dramatic music, then another bloke talking. Annoying. It's like watching one of those American police chase shows where they keep showing parts of a car crash over and over again without actually showing the whole thing.
that is pretty funny... it was stormin hard here when i heard it on the vid i huried up and changed to weather cuz we were alread under sever thunder storm warning

Boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion. Kinda like when a propane tank explodes.. the liquid heats up and expands to the point where the container cant handle the pressure anymore. then Boom
bigmlt3 2 years ago
Not exactly..
It's when the superheated (>100 C) water accumulated at the bottom suddenly expands into steam, and in turn blows the gas along with it.
Try the same with a candelight and water droplets.
