Japan has always produced world class swimmers especially in the breastroke events. I remember watching Akira Hayashi competing in the Asian games 17 years ago and he always got the gold medal. Now with Kosuke Kitajima, it's even better as Kitajima not only won gold medal in the Olympics but holds the current WR in both 100m and 200m breastroke. World class swimmer from an Asian powerhouse.
Aiks? I only remember watching Akira Hayashi as a kid 17 years ago but never recalled Kyoko Iwasaki. I saw Akira Hayashi competed in the Asian Games and he was a class above all the rest as his time as about 1.01 while the 2nd fastest Chinese swimmer was about two body lengths behind at 1.03. Japanese swimmers are improving a lot and now Kosuke Kitajima is the fastest in the world. Also, Japanese swimmers are improving in the butterfly events with Fujii Takuro and Takeshi Matsuda.
Kyoko Iwasaki won an Olympic gold medal in 200 breaststroke when she was FOURTEEEN. That's pretty insane. Wiki it...i think there's also a youtube video on it too. Japan swimmers are insane, i remember at our nationals, a few japanese swimmers came over. One guy, Daiki Sakata, did a 29 for 50 breaststroke and he was only also 14! absolute class.
Oh okay. I don't pay too much attention to female swimmers anyway so I am not familiar with Kyoko Iwasaki. I saw the youtube video on Kyoko and she was good. I particularly admire Kosuke Kitajima as being rather "small" at 5'10" he was a class above the bigger Alexander Oen Dale and Hugues Dubosq, both of them standing at 6'4". Kitajima is really in a class of his own.
Akira Hayashi was 178cm which was about 5'10" as well. I tried to searched for Akira's videos here but cannot find any. I saw the live telecast videos 17-18 years ago during the Asian games. Akira always led the pack with at least one body length ahead. When I see Kitajima leading the pack alone, that reminds me of Akira Hayashi. Also, Akira never wore any goggles during the race and only a cap. Very cool guy.
But I think I recall watching on TV... yes the Asian Games that he was 171cm.
Just wanted to find out if the height was fake or not. Do you know what Akira is doing now? Seems now adays there are too many guys like him in Japan now from the records I found.
Seems the no wearing goggles when you swim Breaststroke was a fashion for the older swimmers... I don't see anybody do that anymore now.... But I wonder if it helps at all... same as some swimmers used to shave here and there. Now probably because of the new designed swimsuits it's no longer needed. Too bad no videos for Akira Hayashi. I only have like 2 of his tapes I recorded in the old days but my VHS video player has broke...
This video isn't 2008 is it? Or the olympics. You wear your nations cap at the olympics, not Coke. And according to the newspapers I'm seein' in japan, he was wearing black caps all this olympics.

I remember Akira Hayashi.
What's he doing now?
I think I gained some weight last time I saw him whenever it was before he dropped out.
Any videos of Akira?
and why does he not wear goggles? Does that help in any way? I never saw Kitajima need to do that.
