  • Can you please give the name of the documentary? Is it available anywhere? I am interested in seeing it in full if possbile.

    Thank you.

  • Thanks to all the teachers who taught me at NSCD: Nadine, Alison, Namron, Gurmit, Debby, John, Paul C, Cathy, Paul F, Dereck and all the other staff. I had the best time of my life! 1889 - 1992/1993.

  • To all the people who have written negative comments about this school when this video was made the school had only been open about 3 years and most of the male dancers in the video had never danced before so yes their jumps arnt going to be perfect just 4 weeks into training. NSCD was and is a ground braking. ! whent to NSCD at the age of 18 in 1989 and had never danced before, i got my first job the day after i graduated. Dance has moved on and so has NSCD. Thanks Northern for all you gave me

  • weyyyyyy

Im at this school right now.

    Its so brilliant.

Your an idiot if you underestimate how brilliant it is.

  • Namron is my dance teacher for Graham now and he is amazing! love it!

  • bad classical level!!!

  • some of the technique in this is really bad, but to be fair, all of the dancers I've seen that graduated from northern has been amazingly strong, both technically and performance wise. and I'll def. audition for the coming year!

  • dotsss

  • I'm going Rambert school and i recommend it to anyone who;s wants to do contemporary but with ballet traning

  • i was going to audition here next year but now.. fuck that! they dont even point their feet and they have bent legs when they were doing their tour jete's! whats going on!?

  • Hear what she's saying...BS. All the dancers 2day R getting nothing from schools. U R so right about the point feet and bent legs. No form ether. My opinion is 2 get some ballet first 2 have the base and after start with contemporary and whatever.

  • believe me, I'm in the school and it's a really good one...this is an old documentary and when I saw it i was terrified...now it's WAY better...if you see on the website you'll see

  • the video says that the students have been there 3-4 weeks. I really don't think you should judge a school on its 1 years after 1 month of training. Some of the dancers in this went on to be some of the leading performers of their time and are now running their own companies.

  • this isnt even good..!

the jumps at the start are quite bad bent legs and everything

    mmhmm :)

  • exactly! for men those kind of jumps are a disgrace!!!!

  • yes i say grande jete entournant, and their not strict, there to soft if u ask me!

  • The jump at the beginning is popularly called a tour jete but can also go by grande jete entrelace, or jete entournant depending on which technique you train in.

  • I'd love so much to go here!!

  • Is it not jete en tournez?

  • Yes it is a grande jete en tournez.

  • no isn't it called jeté entrelacé

  • What is the name of the ballet jump they're doing at the beginning?

  • tour jete

  • It does still exist, a friend of mine is going there this year, GOOD LUCK JORDAN!

  • it looks more neo-classical to me than contemporary. does the school still exist?

  • i think real name of namron is norman... and de clases are ,hrribles...

  • typical of what the 80s offered the dance world...

    unitards.

  • hehe, well said.

and screw goin there, they are SO fucking strict that they never make any creative progress!

  • are you interested to organise a workshop of contemporary dance performing -voice for contemporary dancers?

  • contemporary dancing is some of the prettiest stuff to me...if i had the money i'd do this for the rest of my life...

  • Ah yes, Namron was one hell of a teacher. Graduated in '96 but never got the lucky break afterwards but I wouldn't swap the experience for anything.

  • the guys in the beginning on the right looked like danny tidwell

  • this is contemporary whith ballet techni right?

  • Where is this school seems very promising these kids . I would love to give a class to them

  • its in england

  • Leeds in England

  • contemporary dance is beautiful. i absolutely love it, from the technique to the real movement.

  • thats awsum

  • whats for you contemporary? this seems much like modern - traditional modern, even it looks interesting. whats the goal of the school?

  • the 'ballet' at the start was horrible.

  • thats because at that point in time most of the students had never done ballet technique before!

These were first year students at the beginning of their training, I should know, I was one of them!!

  • northbrook college in worthing sussex...its part of the southern arts centre and if u lack in ballet experience they wil teach u up from scratch x

  • hi can any of you recomend a uni 2 go 2 at moment im just about to go into my 2nd yr (A level) dance, but i havnt done any ballet of tap but i have done contemporary for about 5 year im really worried because i know how hard it is in the 'dance' world and hope that il be able to make it into a uni im just scared i wont be good enough.i really love danc eand its like my life.can you just tell me what i need to do to prepare myself.thank you x x x

  • The woman's commentary is wonderful. She is absolutely right about too much emphasis can kill the perfoming quality. What a wonderful video. Definetly a favourite.

  • hey, soz bout the l8 reply...we've had had solo assessments...aah stressfull!!

Audition was simple barre,(plie's, tondues, frappe's, grande battements etc), chasse porouettes from corner. Brief centre stuff in contemp, and quite a bit of travelling jumpy things. Make up ur own solo, think it had to be about 1min 30. It'll tell u in the prospectus, u should get the 1 for this year just so u know what to expect. Helpfull??

  • I am very partial to the philosophy on technique/performance.

  • oh right, solo's being your own piece prepared?

or they teach you something quick, or they give you a stimulus?

i do contemporary, ballet, tap, street, modern and jazz.

i'm doing a BTEC n.d in dance so i'm planning on going there after i finish the 2 year course.

so i'd hope to go in 2009.

    i'll get a prospectus!

could you tell me more about the audition? what was in the contemp./ballet class? barre work? an enchainement? anything!

    thanks :)

  • I am at this Northern now if u need to know anything?

  • hiya, what was your audition like? what qualifications did you have before?

  • You need to have either a-Levels or something equivilent to them i think-other wise they make u do a kinda written thing-essay of somesort i think. Audition was fine, not too scary. Half hour ballet and contemp class-pretty simple stuff. Then u have to do your solo's...if u get through solo's u have a short physical examination then an interview. What kind of dancing u doing at the moment? Get a prospectus-even if ur not serious about it-just have a nosey!!

  • oh wow...well good luck with your career in dance :) xx
